11 Hideyuki Sobue’s Conversation with Ruskin was a revelation. It added a new dimension to the history of Ruskin portraiture, combining Ruskinian principles of close, careful observation with materials and methods from beyond the cultural traditions with which Ruskin engaged. I very much appreciated the artist tour Hideyuki led at The Ruskin during the exhibition; the event afforded special insights into the depth of his work, and it deepened my appreciation of the unique vision of Ruskin he presented. “
