WELCOME TO ALFF'24 Welcome to the 22nd edition of the Available Light Film Festival! Dákwänī'į yū shäw ghànīddhän. (We are happy to see all of you) Shàw níthan, merci, gunalchîsh, thank you for coming to the Available Light Film Festival. The special time of the year when we meet each other in the comfort of a dark movie theatre to marvel, learn and wonder is just around the corner. We are impatient to bring back the magic of experiencing stories from around the world and to gather as a community between February 8th and 18th at the iconic Yukon Theatre, the Old Fire Hall and the Yukon Arts Centre, as well as on our virtual platform. As always, the ALFF team could now have done it without you, our loyal, adventurous and always curious audiences. We are extremely grateful for your support, patronage, and participation. We live in extraordinary part of this world in an engaged community that shares our passion for independent cinema and arts. This year, we are bringing you an exciting array of Yukon (sprinkled throughout the festival), national, and internationally acclaimed films. The ALFF 2024 opening film, The King Tide, directed by Christian Sparkes, is a beautifully-made mystery-thriller set on an island in the Atlantic where the residents are blessed after a massive storm with the arrival of a child with special healing powers as they cut themselves off from the rest of the world. Some of other Canadian features include the TIFF Top 10 Canadian films of 2023 where you can discover new visions, new voices and new perspectives in films like the hilarious Hey, Viktor!, the whimsical Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, the dazzling The Queen of My Dreams, the spare and bracing Tautuktavuk (What We See) and the urgent documentary Someone Lives Here. International film highlights include Four Daughters (Tunisia), 20 Days in Mariupol (Ukraine), The Monk and the Gun (Bhutan), The Promised Land (Denmark), The Taste of Things (France), The Teachers’ Lounge (Germany), Perfect Days (Japan) and The Zone of Interest (United Kingdom) – a record of films we are bringing to Whitehorse this year that have been nominated at the Academy Awards. You can’t go wrong

with any of them. For the fourth year, Available Light spotlights Indigenous, Black, Persons of Colour and LGBTQ2S+ filmmakers with the Made in the North Award. ALFF is happy to award cash prizes to the three outstanding films by underrepresented filmmakers in ALFF Official Selection. The Made in the North Award is designed to advance the talent of BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ Canadian filmmakers with a focus on those living in the northern territories and regions of Canada. There are three award categories: Best Canadian Feature Film, Best Canadian Short Film and Best Northern Short Film. We are also bringing back the Best Cinematography award, that shines spotlight on the best female-identifying folks who take you on eyeopening journeys with their skills and visual sensibilities. Thank you to all the filmmakers, creatives, industry delegates and participants who will take part in Q&As, ALFF Industry Forum events, ALFF Accelerator, ALFF Pitch Event, concerts and ALFF Creator talks. The Yukon Film Society is honoured to host many talented creatives each year at Available Light. We thank our audiences and partners for their support in championing emerging and diverse voices. A commitment to justice, equity, diversity & inclusion principles in film needs to happen in the cinema and not just on set. As always, we could not present this multi-faceted festival without the continuous and generous support of numerous Yukon businesses and partner non-profits. We know it’s been a challenging couple of years, and we acknowledge your on-going support. Shäw níthän. The Yukon Film Society also acknowledges the ongoing annual support of Canada Council for the Arts, Yukon Lotteries, The City of Whitehorse, Yukon Government and Telefilm Canada. This support makes it possible for us to plan, produce and present this festival. Please join us in thanking all the artists, filmmakers and industry representatives for sharing their work and experience at ALFF and ALFF Industry, as well as the sponsors, community organizations and hard-working volunteers and staff that make Available Light 2024 possible. Shäw níthän, gunalchîsh, mahsi cho, merci, gracias, chi miigwech, Qujannamiik and thank you for coming to Available Light and making this a very special annual community event. The Dark Fruits – Hidden Jicklinghouse Gems in Yukon's Indie DJ Jon Gel FEBRUARY 10TH Rock Scene with Hendrika SATURDAY, YUKON CINEMA | DOORS: 9 PM SHOW FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH YUKON CINEMA | DOORS: 9PM | SHOW 9:30PM | LICENCED ALL-AGES EVENT. TICKETS: $20/ $10 YOUTH UNDER 18

The Dark Fruits are not your typical starryeyed-youngster indie rock band. They may be starry-eyed, but their experiences and perspectives bring a unique depth to their music. They are bound by a love for making music that is authentically northern with a quirky, universal appeal. Their chilled-out sound of their second full-length album, Warm Weather Starter Pack, was recorded with just three members – Tara Martin, the rhythmic heartbeat on drums and back-up vocals; Jordy Walker, the versatile maestro on guitars, bass, synth, and production; and emerging singer-songwriter, Jeff Wolosewich. Their ALFF show will also include Yukon music-scene stalwarts Selina Heyligers-Hare on bass and Andrea McColeman on keyboards. While their first album earned them a showcase opportunity at Breakout West 2019 and the Audience Choice Award at the Yukon Film Society/Music Yukon's 24-hour Music Video Challenge, their focus has evolved. Their new music delves into the themes of connection, separation, and the unique experiences of living in – and sometimes leaving - the northern wilderness. It's an album that speaks to anyone seeking meaning in an everchanging world. Also featured at ALFF this year will be their music video for their single, “Florida”, which features archival 8mm footage from Yukon Archives that has sent a wave of nostalgia across the Yukon. 16

9:30 PM LICENSED ALL-AGES EVEN | TICKETS: PAY WHAT YOU CAN

Jicklinghouse Jicklinghouse swells from the imaginations of Sam Gallagher, Peter Jickling, and Scott Maynard. Sam plays the lap steel, Scott plays a menagerie, and Peter reads his poetry. Together they search for areas of resonance between spoken word and improvisational jazz rock. No journey is ever the same. DJ Jon Gel Raised on Detroit radio during the birth of techno and the heyday of hip-hop, Jon Gelinas brings a musical pedigree informed by everything from funk, punk, and early house to downtempo and the Dead. A dabbler in the depths, Jon Gel is known to present an eclectic mix of floor fillers and left field favourites.

Hebron Relocation

What does it mean to be Inuk? Historically depicted as welcoming and friendly people in remote snowy landscapes, in reality, Inuit live across the globe. Using antique wind-up bears, layered animation, and analogue techniques, McIntyre constructs an animated documentary in an exploration of identity and belonging by Inuit, both in and outside of the community. Herself of mixed Inuk and settler heritage, McIntyre depicts the value of community and asks what it means to belong in a changing world when our ideas of Inuk-ness are so tied to particular representations.

In "Hebron Relocation", Holly Andersen explores what makes a place a home as she learns more about her community’s connection to generations of displaced northern Labrador Inuit.

DIR. SADETLO SCOTT AND HEATHER HEINRICHS, 2023, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES | 20 MIN | NARRATIVE Sâkowêw is a young woman in a remote community who just wants to welcome her new baby safely into the world. She trusts Auntie Mary to honour her family’s traditions. When something goes wrong, she’s snatched from warmth and safety, and spirited away to a disorienting place she never wanted to go. Told from her perspective, Sâkowêw’s story of giving birth lays bare the anti-Indigenous racism entrenched in health systems across Canada. Through intimate conversations with family and harrowing experiences at the local health centre, the film plunges audiences headlong into the deep impacts of colonialism, poor communication, and personal biases that Indigenous communities face. Content advisory: this film may be triggering for some audience members. It deals with themes of racism, impacts of colonialism and trauma.

20 ДНІВ У МАРІУПОЛІ

DIR. MSTYSLAV CHERNOV, 2022, UKRAINE | 94 MIN | DOCUMENTARY SCREENING SPONSOR: YUKON NEWS An AP team of Ukrainian journalists trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol struggle to continue their work documenting the atrocities of Russia’s invasion. As the only international reporters who remain in the city as Russian forces close in, they capture–what has become–some of the most defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more. After nearly a decade covering international conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war for The Associated Press, Mstyslav Chernov makes his feature film debut with 20 Days in Mariupol. The film draws on Chernov’s daily news dispatches and personal footage of his own country at war. It offers a vivid, harrowing account of civilians caught in the siege and offers a glimpse into what reporting from a conflict zone entails, as well as the impact of such journalism around the globe. Made in partnership with The Associated Press, 20 Days in Mariupol has had a decorated run on the 2023 film festival circuit — including winning the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary and the Tim Hetherington Award at Sheffield Film Festival. The film was also honored with DocEdge Film Festival’s awards for “Best International Director” and “Best International Editing,” and has been shortlisted for Documentary Feature Film and International Feature Film for the 96th Academy Awards. In Ukrainian and Russian with English subtitles. Content advisory: Graphic scenes of people in distress, people (including little children) dying.

NINA NAWALOWALO, 2022, AOTEAROA (NZ) | 57 MIN | DOCUMENTARY SCREENING SPONSOR: ERIK PINKERTON PHOTOGRAPHY “I began in innocence, newborn, a blank page. The story was written, the story of thousands of children, has to be heard. Our history must be faced. May the truth set us free” – Fa’amoana John Luafutu. Arriving in New Zealand from Samoa as a young child in the 1950s, Fa'amoana was taken from his family and placed in state care, suffering terrible abuse alongside thousands of other Pacific and Maori children. This documentary explores his journey through state care, prison, gang membership, as well as the intergenerational impacts of these experiences; and ultimately, healing for Fa'amoana and his Family by harnessing the power of his voice as a storyteller.

PARK-EX: AU COEUR DE MTL DIR. AYESHA SHEIKH, 2023, QUEBEC | 13 MIN | DOCUMENTARY While ostensibly a reminiscence of an African-Quebecois man's childhood, this beautiful black and white documentary also plays as a subtle, yet affecting study of institutional and geographic racism in Montreal. The mood of the piece wanders from nostalgia, to humility, to love and to pride. Evocative and wistful.

It is a Pacific story told through a Pacific lens - with the guidance of director Nina Nawalowalo’s graceful vision - as well as a sublime score by NZ music legend Mark Vanilau using powerful symbols and imagery to connect directly with survivors: the return to water - ‘from the river to the sea’ - the feeling of wind caressing skin… the elements of nature that are denied to all those who are or who have been detained and incarcerated. Through sharing this story, Fa'amoana has become a 'voice for the voiceless': for all the thousands of children who never made it this far. Content advisory: References to suicide.

DIR. IAN CHARLES DAFFERN, 2023, ONTARIO | 72 MIN | DOCUMENTARY Can quilting change the world? Renowned quilter Marilyn Farquhar was devastated when police killed her brother after a mental health crisis. So she created Kairos, a series of quilts as a way to process her grief, spark conversations about violence and motivate change in policing. Marilyn was a superstar of the quilting world who never made her artwork political. Then in January 2020, the RCMP shot and killed her brother, an activist who fought for the rights of the homeless in the town of Abbotsford, BC. His 911 call for help summoned an army of police officers, snipers, a K9 unit–but not a single mental health worker. Now Marilyn is on a quest to confront law enforcement with her pain and share her quilts and experiences with those who knew her brother. But as she discovers, grief is a question with no easy answers. Kairos is a Greek word which means ‘an opportune time for action’ and for Marilyn, that time is now. Now grown up, former child actor Cody Lightning is deep in the bottle and down on his luck, basking in past glories via faded VHS tapes and endlessly rewriting zombie-priest scripts with his creative partner Kate (Hannah Cheesman). When his friends stage an intervention, Cody seizes the moment — and camera crew — to take one last shot at producing Smoke Signals 2. With backing from a psycho investor and in hot pursuit of Adam Beach’s wig to tie the film together, Lightning’s deliriously dysfunctional set becomes a mess of unresolved tension and self-destruction, leading to a long-overdue reckoning with the community that raised him. Unapologetic and unafraid to milk sacred cows, Hey Viktor! is an irreverent comedy that’s as smart as it is raunchy, and marks the arrival of a major comedic voice in Indigenous cinema.

A story told through the eyes of an eclectic mix of characters whose lives and livelihoods are intimately entangled with the forest, Silvicola employs sinuating vignettes and industrial soundscapes to explore the tensions and dilemmas between commodification and conservation. Contemplative and sensorially immense, Silvicola embeds the viewer within remote spaces and worksites normally hidden from view—from the verdure of old growth canopies to the destructive gigantism of mechanical harvesting, to the numbing rhythm of sapling nurseries. Situating itself as a study of both our connection and disconnection with the forest, Silvicola is a film which demands of us to reconsider the divisions that have been erected between natural and industrial worlds by spotlighting the hidden labour and logics of modern forestry.

DIR. ZACK RUSSEL, 2023, ONTARIO | 75 MIN | DOCUMENTARY

SCREENING SPONSOR: MOLOTOV AND BRICKS TATTOO Someone Lives Here is a modern-day David and Goliath story, set against the backdrop of North America's housing crisis. Carpenter Khaleel Seivwright builds small, life-saving shelters for unhoused people living outside in Toronto during the winter of the pandemic. His actions attract international attention, but also staunch opposition from city officials. In the summer of 2021, Khaleel Seivwright, decided to build tiny homes for Toronto’s homeless population. Soon afterwards, the city told him that he wasn’t allowed to place them in city parks, citing safety issues, despite a lack of available shelter beds. Someone Lives Here, which won the Audience Award for Best Canadian Documentary at Hot Docs 2023, is deftly told by first-time documentarian Zack Russell, who captures this Kafkaesque story in a humane and empathetic way. We see how people living in the tiny homes were harassed by some members of the public who were worried they would bring down the area’s property values. Police-enforced evictions reach a dramatic climax as organizers in favor of the tiny homes lock arms in the face of violence and arrests. An important story for our time, as housing insecurity across Canada reaches new heights and people look to find solutions in the face of bureaucratic roadblocks.

DIR. He seeks to start farming crops, build a colony in the name of the King, and gain a noble title for himself. This beautiful but forbidding area also happens to be under the rule of the merciless Frederik De Schinkel, a preening nobleman who understands the threat that Kahlen poses to his power. Struggling against the elements and local brigands, Kahlen is joined by a couple who have fled the clutches of the rapacious De Schinkel. As this group of misfits begins to build a small community in this inhospitable place, De Schinkel swears vengeance, and the confrontation between him and Kahlen promises to be as violent and intense as the two men themselves. Mads Mikkelsen cuts a formidable figure in this enthralling period drama. A brutal, bloody, and complex story of savagery and ambition, this epic Danish historical drama is styled like an old fashioned American Western.

DIR. FAWZIA MIRZA, 2023, ONTARIO, NOVA SCOTIA | 97 MIN | DRAMA-COMEDY Fawzia Mirza’s stylish feature debut mashes up the textures of Indian cinema and a Canadian coming-of-age picture, tracing key moments in the lives of a mother and daughter born three decades apart. Fawzia Mirza's bright, energetic first feature, which grew out of their 2012 short film of the same name, explores the chasm between individual desires and cultural expectations, fluidly slipping between the textures of Indian cinema and the concerns of a Canadian coming-of-age picture. In the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, thousands of people are unlawfully invading protected lands, devastating centuries-old forests for resource extraction and fast profits. Now, as the health of the entire Amazon teeters on the verge of catastrophe, will Brazil and the world take notice?

Samuel LeBlanc, a young transgender musician, undertook an artistic approach to find a rural queer community in his native Acadia. During his wanderings, he will find, behind the heteronormative rural landscapes, people determined to live their differences without having to leave their hometown or deny their cultural identity to get there. Samuel will come out with the conviction that the rural queer reality in Acadia, although sometimes difficult, has its share of beauty and community acceptance and that a queer Acadia can and does exist.

Indigenous forest guardian Marçal Guajajara and activist Puyr Tembé stand at the frontlines of the fight, risking their lives to protect their ancestral lands from relentless invasions and deforestation. On the other side–Valdir, an illegal logger is trapped in a desperate struggle to make ends meet and sees no other way than continuing to cut down the forest. The narrative at the heart of We Are Guardians is powerful — a story of hope and resilience amidst an unfolding crisis. Through a tapestry of voices, this award-winning documentary provides a raw and intimate look at the lives of those closest to the Amazon and peels back the layers of this critical situation to reveal a story that ultimately affects all of us.
