CONTENT PROLOGUE

Architecture begins with the human need for living places. When the process of social production is accelerated and people's living standards is gradually satisfied, the solution of people's spiritual needs has increasingly become the universal significance of contemporary architecture. Ordinary social problems often reflects people's lack of spirit in the tide of The Times. As a medium, architecture should convey the architect's thoughts on nature, human and social issues. For me, the birth of architecture must be based on basic spatial needs and social contexts. If functional zoning and streamline planning are feedback to the most basic functionality of architecture, then the construction of formal language, the selection and use of materials and the creation of space atmosphere are effective ways to translate immeasurable mental memory into people's perception in architectural places.

In this portfolio, I hope to show my reflection on the current social situation in the era of stock planning through my academic and professional experience. From the perspective of humanistic care, through the functional and social consideration, architecture becomes a means to try to solve problems. In the three projects, I have a clear consideration of the functional zoning and streamline planning of large-scale public buildings, a discussion on the formal sequence and the creation of space atmosphere, and a reflection on how the change of the scale of basic spatial elements reflects the psychological behavior of people.

Architects are the creators of living space. Every idea we come up with may become a starting point for public participation in the future. Analyze the social problems in the era of stock planning, focus on people-oriented design, and effectively consider the needs of the masses, so that the social value of architecture can be carried forward.

Zhe-min hills, in the southeastern of China, are rich in mountain-tea because of their superior geographical environment. Shouzhang Village, Zhouning County, is a famous tea town in Fujian Province, with a long history of tea making and a large area of tea plantations. However, as China's urbanization has decimated rural populations, this traditional craft is not being protected. In recent years, the Chinese government has also introduced some revitalization policies to revive the rural industry.

In the context of this policy, the project focus the local people's connection to the unique mountain landscape and try to convey this to the participants of the building. The design starts from the manual tea making process, and explores the relationship between light and the wall and the volume in a rational and perceptual way , trying to create different spatial feelings. Through the tour experience in the tea workshop, people's awareness of traditional manual tea making skills is strengthened, so that it can be protected and deeply rooted in people's hearts.

Zhe-Min Hills, with high altitude, precipitation and other superior geographical conditions, the distribution of many tea planting bases, rich n mountain-tea. There are many tea planting bases. Zhouning County is one of the highest towns in the region, which has a long history of tea making. However, due to its mountainous location and lagging economic development, more and more young people have given up their lives in Zhouning County in recent years and moved to big cities. Fewer and fewer young people are interested in the craft of making tea by hand. The traditional tea culture is losing its focus. Chinese government has introduced some revitalization policies to revive the rural Area. We need to seek corresponding measures to improve this situation according to the policies.

Traditional Conservation Economy Revitalization

China's rural revitalization policy includes five aspects: culture, economy, industry, talents and organization. For Zhouning County, the revitalization of the tea industry is a good starting point. Strategically, based on the superior natural conditions, on the one hand, we can continue its long heritage of tea culture in the past. On the other hand, throuigh the construction of tea workshop architecture space, the building can become a local cultural landmark and get more people's attention

The new tea workshop will target two groups of people: craftsmen and tourists, with production space and experience space respectively. Through the streamline design, visitors can enhance the experience of manual tea making process, increase the understanding of traditional tea culture, and spread it. The whole process will eventually feedback the effectiveness of rural revitalization policy from two aspects: traditional protection and economic revitalization.

[ The Impact of rural revitalization on Tea Culture

Shouzhang Village, located in Makeng Town, Zhouning County, is a famous tea town in Fujian Province, with a history of thousands of years of tea growing. There is a large tea plantation near the village. In recent years, the local government has vigorously promoted tea culture and tea is the main source of income for local residents.

The distribution of Shouzhang Village and the main tea plantations is shown in the figure below. Squares of different shades of gray represent different densities of the distribution of tea trees (the darker the squares, the higher the density of tea trees). The site is located on the hillside between the village and the main planting base, with convenient accessibility and wide view

When talking about the construction of new youth communities, we often mention sharing and openness. However, they often neglect the psychological needs of lonely personality. For this group of people, they need a relatively independent space to live in order to make them feel more secure. A fact that cannot be ignored is that in recent years, in addition to the elderly suffering from loneliness, due to insufficient social experience and some other factors, loneliness is gradually becoming the norm for more and more young people.

The project aims to create a solitary friendly youth community . By analyzing the psychological needs of people with different degrees of loneliness, the project uses flexible "arch" elements to create spaces of different scales and configure different functions for the corresponding groups , so that young people affected by different degrees of autism can find their own lifestyle in the community, so as to reduce the negative impact of loneliness on themselves and treat life positively

07

[ Young People Overrun by Loneliness ]

When we think of lonely people, we often think of the elderly. However, influenced by multiple social factors, loneliness has gradually become a common psychological problem among young people.

According to the Office for National Statistics, young people aged 16-24 are the most often lonely of all age groups, followed by the group aged 25-34. In addition, the topic of "loneliness" on social media is often forwarded and commented on by a large number of young people. We cannot ignore that autism is spreading among more and more young people.

The scene where loneliness happens

[ Why Young People Feel Lonely ]

Being out alone, really miss my family.

There's no park around here to rest in.

For many people who grew up in cities, public space, such as small square in the park, is the place where we made friends and friendships. The reduction of public space increases the estrangement between people, and increases the sense of wandering in a foreign land for young people living alone.

Working overtime every day, have no time to hang out with my friends.

The fierce competitive environment, busy work pace and relatively high economic pressure make it more difficult for workers to find time to make friends. Frequent and irregular overtime work and long, crowded commutes make many urban youth feel socially lonely.

Young people who leave their hometown do not want to call the rental house they live in every day "home",because they are far away from their loved ones. This loss of home is a sign of a lack of belonging. Lack of belongings makes people feel that they are not an integral part of that system or environment.

Checking social media every day is really boring.

Is this person worth my heart?

Now, a growing body of evidence confirms that the negative effects of social networking on social relationships may be far greater than the positive benefits. Not interacting with others face to face, is associated with a significant reduction in depression and loneliness.

[ Embrace loneliness: Create Solitary Friendly Communities ]

"Loneliness expresses the pain of being alone and solitude expressesthegloryofbeingalone."

It would be a mistake to see loneliness as a "disease" to be eradicated. Loneliness is a human condition.

Dealing with loneliness is understanding the feeling itself. To quote Paul Tillich, "solitude expresses its glory", we are all alone, therefore, we are all connected through this universal human experience.

True love is often the most effective way to cure loneliness.

Love in modern society is also often related to the interests of both parties. People's proficiency in dating is like a string of code that has been copied and pasted many times. We have already lost the original expectation of love.

03 The Renaissance of Market

Reconstruction of Shicheng Market

Zhouning, Fujian, China

Academic project

Time: 09.2022-11.2022

Tutor: Ping Su suping@scut.edu.cn

When we were young, our parents often took us to the market. The bustling crowd, the Shouting of the vendors, and the sound of bargaining are all memories engraved in our hearts. However, in recent years, with the development of economy, more and more e-commerce and take-out platforms have appeared, and people can buy fresh vegetables without leaving their homes. The new large supermarket also accommodates the function of selling vegetables, and the environment is more comfortable than the traditional market, attracting more residents to go. As a result, more and more traditional wet markets are facing poor performance

This project focuses on the poor operating status of Shicheng Market, once the largest market in Zhouning County, and attempts to revive the vitality of the market. Mainly in view of the problems existing in the stall setting, goods storage and site interface of the current market, the market can be revitalized by setting up forward warehouse, enriching the business in vertical space and improving quality of public space

13

Market is the most important type of community service industry, an important part of urban commerce and residents' life, and the smallest and densest neighborhood commercial unit indispensable to residents, which contains huge development value. On the one hand, it is the owners and commodity operators of market property who pursue the maximization of leasing and operating income, so that it has obvious economic attributes On the other hand, as the main place of commodity supply, it has both social and public welfare

However, with the continuous acceleration of urban processes and the emergence of fresh markets or large supermarkets, traditional markets have brought great competitive pressure, and some markets are facing the risk of poor management or even closure. How to revitalize the traditional market is an urgent problem we need to solve.

[Differentpeople'sviewsonthecurrentofflinemarkettobuyfood]

The sanitary conditions in traditional markets are poor and young people are reluctant to come. The rent is high. I might as well be a mobile stall. It's easier.

We should still go to the market to buy food, only to see the freshness of the ingredients. The quality of things online is not guaranteed. Now the online e-commerce supermarket is so convenient I directly use my mobile phone to choose food and order. The food can be delivered to my home in half an hour. I used to buy food in the market. In recent years, there are more and more large supermarkets close to my home. So often go directly to the supermarket to buy food. And the food categories in the supermarket are clear and easier to find

[ Site Survey Information ]

Shicheng Market was once the largest market in Zhouning County. In recent years, due to the increase of the surrounding market and the establishment of numerous e-commerce supermarkets as well as the lack of repair and sanitation problems, the number of consumers has decreased significantly. The figure below shows the location of the site and the distribution of surrounding related business types.

The diagram shows the functional layout of the new market in the vertical space after the integration of multiple business formats. The functional properties from the bottom to the top gradually shift from informal to formal, and there is more open space on the upper level.

Tidy up cluttered goods. Set up dedicated storage space and enough shelves to store goods.

The main entrance interface is equipped with retreating platform and corridor to guide the crowd to enter the market.

The previous market was mostly occupied by indoor trading space. The peripheral streamline of original market is single, and the interface continuity is too strong.

[before] [after]

The single fresh food selling function can't meet the needs of people today. The transformation of market to compound function is an inevitable trend in the future. Integrate a variety of business forms, enrich the types of people's activities, and enhance market vitality.

The market is the smallest community unit. So it should provide a comfortable public space for people to stay and exchange activities. This type of space usually ought to have adequate lighting, ventilation conditions and appropriate landscaping.

The new market takes into account the relationship with the surroundings, the open interface of the city and the functional needs of the building. The streamline is more abundant, more grey space (corridor, arcade, open floor) is set up to guide the crowd to enter the market activities.
