The site is green space in middle of high rise residents, by building up the elementary school, current public program and activities would have no place to go, the closed school and closed resident create a negative relationship. During the rapidly urbanism process of southern china, the urban public green space declined sharply. The closed resident as a major real estate develop mode makes most of the open green spaces private property instead of public resources. More urban public spaces are really needed. The traditional garden and school space are the core sprit of local architecture culture. The space concepts come from the traditional space image form different sizes gardens and changing walk space, which could maximize children’s interest in outdoor space during educate the kids of the historical culture. 10

CONCEPT: WHY PLAZA? Though there are form and size differences, he ancient temple space for village and the plaza for city, which both are important gathering and activity field, reflect the particular social feature of the context.The design pick urban plaza as a transition of huge public building and the urban village, and weaken the conflict between two.

CULTURE IN VILLAGE The urban village around the site still keeps the traditional village fabric, comfortable streets, plaza between housing with old trees, small canals, fish pools and the historical building texture. By planning the new culture synthesis, I believe that the public culture facility should respond to the local urban fabric and context, and let the culture continue. So in the New CULTURAL MALL, traditional urban fabric would be the main element to help organize the space, which eventually make the context from village spread to the new building area.

Scene before construction
I brought the traditional architectural images into this project, the concept of the historical roof style and the metaphor of wooden details try to provide the experience of history. Walking through the bridge would be the process of “CONTEMPORARY – ANCIENT - CONTEMPORARY”, which is the mirrored experience to the northern campus axis. This experience could be an invisible linkage between two campuses.

The images are showing the sense of communication and inspiring the imagination of what would happen in the “street” or “bazaar” of the student center here.

Given by the situation, how could the construction of student center avoid the situation continues to deteriorate? How to make the negative become positive?

The lake view reflected by the façade makes the building iconic, and there is a subtle relationship has been build up between two lakes – people walk along the East lake could get the view of West lake on the façade through the bushes, and vice versa. Although the semi-transparent curtain wall seems free standing, the reflected view make the building a natural part of the surround environment.

1. Physical model of the north side In the North siede of the center, the standard classrooms in the old building are modified into different scale rooms , which will fit into all student activities and purposes. Also different sacles of open space are created to connect all the rooms. 2. Physical model of the south and east side The traditional mode of library, the lobby is always in the center, but contrastly the library founction in this student center is placed in the core, leaving the public space sourrounding it. The public space are fullfil from the bottom to the top, facing either south or east, which means that lobby will not only open to the building itself but to the whole outer space. Sytudents walking aside will keep an eye on it, feeling fairly attractive.

Thinking abouth this disaster: Stood the ruins of messy after the 5.12 Earthquake, i was shocked by every piece of broken plants and trees, brick and stone. Life is so valuable but so fragile.What an architecture work could do to express the feeling of this disaster?

Inside and outside world In cross sections of this area we can recognize that the earthquake museum is rightly located in the center of this basin. The way to response to the environment is the key point to the shape. In this project, i would bend the canopy to the ground, making a unique sinking. When visitors move around inside, their attention would be drawn to the outside world.

This is my design concept concerning this issue : What we need is not a simple express of so-called move on, but rather should be a relieved inaction or a tranquil attitude – let the architecture fading out, blend into the surrounding; treat the museum as a white canvas, let the light and shadow to tell the story, let the outside world and time become the exhibits, let the building blend into the natural being, let all quite down.
----- We raise our heads looking at the ceiling, feeling the life that pass. ----- We stand on the ground, feel the broken earth. ----- We look through the window, remaindering us the nightmare of destruction. A memorial place seems should be a place to record the memory, but i strongly believe that we commemorate in order to forget.

Hightlight Design purpose: In the inner space of a museum, light environment should be in high quality, that is natural light that should be avoid coming directly from the outside environment. Therefore, the facade is made with opacity material, and accordingly the light resource usually comes from the skylight. To make people can feel with the outside environmential change in the museum, I want to create a linkage between the sunlight condition and the shape of the museum roof, which means that when the sunlight is in high intensity the inner light resource is weaken, and vice versa. Hopefully, through this method, the inner space would be with magic light and be very interesting
