SERIES OF RESORT HOTEL IN UBUD BALI
PREFACE This Resort Booklet is an embodiment of Bali’s Resort Benchmarking journey that was assigned to me and Anindya to learn more about resort development in mountain area. The area we chose is located in Ubud Bali that is naturally given some spectacular views. The main purpose we observe some resort hotel in Ubud Bali is to know more about how the resort typology is built upon an undulating and steep terrain. We want to say gratitude to our supervisors, because of their endorsement , we finally can get this book done. We also would like to give appreciation to Yunisa, the intern who have helped us in doing a more detail literature research to finalize this book. Since this booklet content is gathered from many sources and articles, we also attached them in the back page of this book to express our honour. This book is written as a tool for AECOM DP+E studio to enrich them about resort design comprises it’s concept and programs. We hope this book will give much benefit to studio to become more productive and innovative.

ocated by the terraced slopes of Ayung River in Bali, the compound hosts 12 unique and sustainable bamboo houses and villas. Each luxury villa and house in Green Village is constructed almost entirely from bamboo, customdesigned by the IBUKU architectural team and built by hand. The Bamboo houses are designed and built around the natural contours of each plot with rare views of the river front and the volcanoes of Bali. The concept is to create beautiful living spaces, in which people can live where luxury and comfort fit into natural landscapes.

Rice Bowl Concept
T
he Rice Bowl Architecture Journey starts at the point of arrival, where guests cross a wooden bridge suspended high above the Sayan Valley in Bali’s central highlands, over a river that is part of the UNESCO-listed “subak” sustainable irrigation system. The bridge leads to an elliptical rooftop lotus pond from where they start their descent into the lobby and valley.

his curved structure that combines natural and man-made materials, houses the lobby, restaurant, health club, spa, and 18 suites. Teak walkways are everywhere flanked by water-drenched an moss covered walls. The main building and its site is nothing if not dramatic and this is obviously not accidental, as the sense of theatre is actively cultivated by the resort’s London based architect John Heah. A preoccupation with the experiential perspective of the visitor is central to Heah’s work and this concern is consistently applied throughout the resort.

t 75 kilometres, the Ayung River is the longest and most historically significant river in the island. For one, it was the lifeline of the then-farming lifestyle, and it has inspired countless objects of art. Ayung, once the main source of the majority of irrigation dams and the simplistic nature of the village life, is now attracting thousands of vacation goers to be nestled in the forests and valleys inside the many worldclass luxurious resorts in Bali. The Ritz-Carlton aims to take that luxury up a notch with its latest Ritz-Carlton Reserve project and so Mandapa was born.
23
W
hen designer Miles Humphreys of PT Bali Anugrah Dewata got the brief, he went to the barren site and examined its extreme contours. Both Miles and the project owner were determined to use the challenging and unforgiving 10-storey descent to the riverside to their favour even though this entailed a major excavation work. “I want the Mandapa to look aged, to have a feel that it has been there forever,” he touted “I want it to also disappear so that the nature is the main show.” The site, designed in a more toned-down, earthy look, has since revealed itself to be a natural beauty. At the bottom of the valley is a tenderfoot curve of the river — one of its kind in the entire length of Ayung — where a wellcultivated, sizable rice field would become one of the property’s central element.

t the bottom of the valley, Bamboo pods are erected at a near river-level to house nine private dining cocoons. This is a rather radical departure from the timber-based structure all around Mandapa. Raised above the rice field, is the Sawah Terrace, where breakfast and lunch are served. The two are designed to be different yet a complement to one another; wood versus bamboo, rice field and the river, day versus night. More conventional structures can be found at Mandapa’s treatment and sports facilities.

aya Ubud Resort & Spa is located north east of Ubud, sitting in splendid seclusion on a site bordered by the dramatic Petanu River Valley and the vibrant rice fields of Peliatan. The ten hectare tract of land is a tranquil haven of tropical garden, thatched buildings, private pool villas and luxury guestrooms. Maya Ubud’s design juggles with new and traditional concepts: there are no intricate Balinese paintings, masks or statues; instead, a deeper, ancient Balinese concept is celebrated through its landscape and architecture.
Layout Setting A central ceremonial walkway along the central ridge connects important public spaces from the porte-cochere, through the lobby and down to the spa. The villas or dwellings are then positioned on either side creating a village like axis that follows the contours of the land.
