approach For this project I would like to introduce my family name as a subject to show people the background and meanings behind my name as well as some other individual Chinese characters, which contain hundreds of years of development. I used the shape and structure of each character to create a visual personality, such as using patterns, textures, or illustrations to tell the story of a name
objective Choose a subject and use experimental typography to tell a personal story in an unorthodox and compelling manner.
by using my own name as a form. Through visuals, I want people to learn more about my work and philosophy as a graphic designer influenced by my background and family. This book’s format is a square, which presents the most commonly used grid of the Chinese character, based around the structure of the word rice (米). This “rice grid” is very suitable for writing.

approach The goal of this book is to make people care about a subject by telling a story, and my incentive is to introduce the Chinese street food culture to the Western world by explaining the enriching meaning of “Kung Fu” through illustrating the street food creators. Kung Fu is any individual accomplishment or skill cultivated through long and hard work. The book shows the
objective The goal of this book is to create a type system to tell a narrative story. This system consists of a multi-page document, including art direction, writing, photography and/or illustration, design, and production of a final, well-crafted piece.
reader the preparation of street food that can be seen as an art involving craftsmanship and skills developed over time. This book not only brings back memories of the street food in my hometown but also strives to communicate to the reader the story between street foods and street smarts. I used the accordion fold format to represent the ancient Chinese artifact so as to create the flow of the movement along the storyline.

approach Cara Dillon’s Craigie Hill is a song about two young lovers who head off to America to find their fortune but it turns out to be a one-way ticket to a difficult life. I chose this song because its story touches my soul and somehow interprets my feelings of also being an individual who left her home to pursue a dream in this foreign country. The creation of this poster is a reflection of
objective An experimental typography poster project based on the lyrics of a song. The type and image need to be combined and represent the main idea and rhythm of the song.
my emotions. As I gathered the imagery of every emotion, idea, metaphor, and visual associated with it. I started developing the theme imagery through combining typography, imagery and layout. I shot a group of images which containing layered typography on to different environments in order to produce the representation of the song.

approach Míng means “the sound of birds” but also “sing” in Chinese. The structural system of ancient Chinese architecture with the shape of antique lanterns and the beauty of Chinese paper-cut inspired the creation of this birdhouse. The birdhouse’s pieces are made from wood materials and silk strings woven by hand. The recycled materials were found in thrift and fabric stores. The birdhouse can be reassembled

Create a birdhouse that is made entirely out of recycled materials and also create a brand image, product name, and determine where the product will be sold.
for Gump’s Gift Shop in San Francisco and is meant to serve as more of a sculptural piece than functional one. The unique technique of Míng is that it can be taken apart or resembled in different ways, and each piece can be recycled.

approach I designed an identity system for a conceptual café-restaurant in San Francisco that serves flower-infused foods and beverages. Customers would choose from a dish of the day, spring flower salads, cauliflower soup with chive blossoms, a slice of rosemary cake with butter cream frosting, sandwiches with petals, organic tea, or go for just a cool glass of rosé. The café space would be

approach Sky Saddle is a small-scale winery in Napa, California, that needs a new brand voice to promote its wines using organically grown grapes. It has not yet successfully found a logo to match its name in the past. I created a new branding voice for this unique winery that respects its natural aspects. The logo is intended to express the grape that is grown with all
objective Rebrand an existing company that sells organic products. Create a new corporate visual system that is suitable for the company's product lines.
organic methods. It also comes with a whole packaging system and online promotion. I began the design by searching organic shapes and later I incorporated the color from grape leaves. Then I created an abstract image representing Sky Saddle wines as creations straight from nature.

approach I created the “Catharsis” film festival, customized for the Korean film director Chan-wook Park, who is called by critics “The Savior of Violence.” Park is one of the most acclaimed directors in his native country. His films are noted for their immaculate framing and often-brutal subject matter. Thus it is a big challenge for me to develop a comprehensive visual system, when anger spins out
objective To plan and design for a multi-faceted film festival based on the works of a selected film director. A variety of communication materials, which can represent the essence of this film director’s style of work, will be needed for this special event.

approach Firefy Project was a team project conducted in collaboration with Good magazine. The scope of this effort was to imagine an alternative way of harvesting our energy. Our objective was to reform not only harmful issues like coal extraction or importing our energy from out of state, but to go a step further and imagine a truly revolutionary way of generating electricity and getting rid of the power grid throughout the country. The firefly solution capitalized on San Francisco’s culture of sharing and physical health to build a human-powered city. Our conceptual idea is unique and futuristic although inspired by existing technology.

approach panda dilemma: sustainable alternatives to species survival. The Panda Dilemma Foundation is a proposal designed to internationally revolutionize the protection of endangered species through research that favors natural means. The Foundation seeks to create a network of scientists, environmentalists, and creative sponsors who will cooperate with designers to solve the problem

The MFA Thesis is an engaging project joining critical thinking, problem solving and innovation to the visual communication of invention of ideas. It is a process of research, experimentation and design.
While the giant panda has long symbolized struggles against extinction, the panda itself is in jeopardy because of the very strategies employed in traditional speices restoration.
