REFUGE South Lawn, The University of Melbourne, Parkville, Victoria, Australia Semester 1, 2014 Individual Project Proposal This project aims to explore the possibility of refuge space at South Lawn, for individuals who want to escape from stress and pressure created at University. Analysis of the Melbourne University site reveals that there is limited resting space in University ground, while relieving stress is fundamental for students to improve their health, mood, productivity and most of all, to successfully carry out campus life. This exploration therefore proposes various stress-relieving activities that can be facilitated through new spatial conditions.

WYNDHAM CITY GATEWAY Wyndham City, Victoria, Australia Semester 1, 2013 Architecture Design Studio 3_Air Group Project_in charge of Concept design, 3D Modeling and Model Making Proposal Located at the Western side of the Wyndham City, the proposed gateway will be at a highly exposed location to the visitors. This urban precinct of the municipality is undergoing a rapid growth and prosperity. According to the City Plan 2011-2015 by the Wyndham City Council, Wyndham is planned to be a place for long term business attraction, retention and expnsion. It is therefore expected that the design outcome has to crrespond to the overall image of the city which is innovative, dynamic, metropolitan and fast growing. It also has to help improve the visual appearance of the city to enhance a sense of pride, and as a place to live, work and invest. The installation will eventually be viewed by motorists travelling at high speed on highways. In response to this factor, the design outcome should be evocative which manipulates the use of light, form and material.

CONCEPT

In order for the city to achieve its identity of space, the design was considered engaging users with experiences, that creates discourse, not stopping as a static monumental object on site. Form generating process was undertaken through transforming and distorting images of car light that represents speed. The pattern was achieved by origami folding of eight-thousand pieces of elements with wings put into each pocket then being able to form

a smooth surface as well as being a self-supporting structure. The rich aesthetic properties involving dynamic and repetitive morphology will maximise engagement, intimacy and reciprocity of user with not only within the structure but also with the surrounding environment. During the night, the glowing patern through the porosity in structural property of the design juxtaposed with lights will create sensorial effect and divining mood.

As first step, the surface was created based on the theme ‘transformation and visualisation of speed’. Then the element was generated through point xyz. The element (surface module) was then used as a reference to morph on the surface.

PIERCING MEMORIES The Conan Doyle Mystery Theatre

Corner of Bourke and Spencer Street Semester 2, 2013 Architecture Design Studio 4_Fire Proposal Students were asked to design a theatre complex dedicated to the stagng of murder mystry plays, in honour of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), the author of Sherlock Holmes detective stories (1887-1928) and a pioneer of the murder mystery genre. His two Sherlock Holmes plays, Sherlock Holmes (1899), which was co-written with the American actor, William Gillette (1853-1937), and the Speckled Band (1910), will feature prominently in the new theatre company’s repertoire and may be reflected in the design of the building.

Piercing Memories

10

CONCEPT The concept mainly focused on Sherlock Holmes’ extraordinary investigation skill, basing on his insight that has a tremendous role in catching the clues that are easy to be missed by others. Firstly a mysterious incident happens. At the crime scene, evidences are damaged, broken and dispersed by suspect. During the investigation, the clues dispersed are observed by Holmes. The observation of scenes then instantly becomes memories. All the scenes are stored as pieces of memory, piercing into his brain systematically. I tried 1. Mystery crime scene happens 2. Clues are fragmented 3. Clues disparted are observed to depict the moment where the broken memories instantly break through his brain.

4. Clues pierce into Holmes’ memory

SPIRITUAL PRESENCE of the Sacred and Profane

North of Camley St. Natural Park, London, UK Entry to Combo Competition: Faith July 2014 Proposal Religion, as a collection of belief, often intended to explain the meaning/origin of life based on different cultural systems. Each derives their morality and preferred life styles, resulting in conflicts in all kinds scale. This has been major issue in human civilization for thousands of years, and such problem need to be addressed and minimized. To understand conflicts between religions, we were determined to investigate the phenomena of spiritual presence. Presence is a common concept across religions, stating God’s presence in each human being. Dubbed by philosopher and anthropologist, Ludwig Feuerbach, “God is to speak, the outward projection of human’s inward nature.” The act of worship is hence, a conversation with God, your inner-self. The design intended to increase tolerance between people with different believes/atheists by offering a space for all religion, the sacred and the profane.

CONCEPT

SECTION

The design is manipulated by merging two systems: by people’s understanding of their own believes and by observing people with a different belief compare to yours. A pavilion design is employed as a framework for people to engage with their self-consciousness, yet at the same time observing others worship in silence, which provides the opportunity of learn and understand The contraction and expansion of space together with the change of light and shadow perform as a ceremony for visitors to emerge into their self-consciousness along the journey. Light serves as a guide for visitors to explore and follow the designated journey, light is also an important device for the illustration of the atmosphere of spiritual presence. Visitors are joined at an open space at the end of the journey, which encourage cross religions and cultural interactions across individuals and groups, to achieve religious harmony and reconciliation in the long run. WORKS AT DAEYEON TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE FIRM The internship involved creating Documents of Plan and Elevation using AutoCAD. The task was to take a survey of a Korean traditional house (Haengnangchae), specifically occupied by servants and known as servants’ quarter. Then documenting process was undertaken with the survey references.
