Ageing Society in Ageing Place (Thesis Project - 2015 to 2016) Located in the heart of Saltaire, the project is about bringing people together and let people grow old in Saltaire. The thesis began with the investigation of Saltaire - a model village that inspired the garden city

+ Value

movement. It was created for a healthier environment for Salts Mill workers and is now searching for a new identity beyond its current legacy and

Ageing

a sustainable future. Thus my research question is ‘How can the third age

Ageing

P

society be used as a new creative force and bring new identities to Saltaire? How can Saltaire become a new social capital and model village for the growing ageing population?’ I proposed a senior co-housing community for these silver citizens and their life onwards. The proposal acts

+ Value

as a community scale nanny house as well as an independent community. It offers residence run clubs, Sunday school, nursery allotments and spa back to the community.

Residence Only Service Area shared kitchen& laundry room, activity room and on site care for each block, cycle store, plant room, trash bin area and circulation

Residence Run Community Service Area reception, public toilets, 3 openable lecture room with flexible seating area open up to street level open square; therapy spa and kids play open to ground level.

Intermediate Care Unit Designed for senior citizens who need intense care support. These studio flat is located on the ground floor right next to on site care and shared living facilities. These units can also be used as visitor accommodation when empty.

Third-age Unit Designed for third-age tenants who do not require intense care regularly. These 1 bed / 2 bed flats will be able to provide different support accordingly.

Family Unit N

The family units are designed with family and friends care in mind. These 2 bed 2 bath units third-age tenants to live together with their parents or two third age couples living together. The living room of these units can also be easily changed into another bedroom for short term visitors.

Social Bridge (Research Project - 2014 to 2015) The project located at the gate of Leeds Southbank. It is an area of future expansions, which includes the site for future HS2 transport interchange, new tram line and a city scale park. The area is built around car usage, which resulted in the area underused and unattractive. The buildings around it do not enclose, embrace nor protect those passing through, whether on foot, in a car or on a bus, it is a place to get through quickly, not a place to linger and enjoy. The project intends to re-define the relationship between Architecture and urban space. The ultimate goal is to draw people into the area and promoting local communities and business using events and activities. Target Area - Leeds Southbank

Area Analysis / Moments

12

Phase I 2015-2020 attract & engage

Phase II 2020-2030 recreate & reconnect

Phase III from 2030 promote

Phase I - The proposal intend to create a temporary event space by blocking car access on Meadow lane to engage with stakeholders. As noted in my moment, the area is divided into pieces by fences and high-way. The proposal will create a car-free zone where people can walk freely and wander around. It intend to raise local awareness, promote pedestrian usage. It could be a test ground and founding scheme for further development.

13

As the time and resources are limited. I create an alternative way to generate the building program

Phase II - The building is a social hub for the local people, that has the potential to open up to the city and taken over the in-between spaces around the building. The design forms two routes, riverside walk and a passage connecting the Southbank to the riverfront and with the proposed new bridge back to Leeds City Centre. It also can transform from a humble building into several eye-catching stages.

Phase III - At this time the site will be surrounded by new city park. The building will continue served as a central gathering and resting place for the whole southbank area.

Around the Toilet (Live Project - Group Work - 2015) The client ‘Around the Toilet’, is a cross-disciplinary, arts-based research group that has been exploring the toilet as a place of exclusion and belonging. Researchers on the project are based across three Universities. Upon first meeting, the client had explored the challenges and politics of access to public toilets for groups such as trans, genderqueer, non-binary people and disabled members of the public through participatory workshops, however, are not clear what to do next. We then established our job should be specialised and formalise their research findings into tools that can be used for engaging the public, as well as decision makers and designers in the future. Then we agreed to produce an architect’s toolkit, an installation and a game targeting different user groups. These outcomes were then handed over to the client, who will continue to raise awareness about the challenges and politics of accessibility to public toilets, as well as educating designers and decision makers. Your Orangery (Live Project - Group Work - 2014) The Grade 2 listed Clapham Orangery is a forgotten gem located in the heart of Lambeth. Our clients the Lambeth Living was eager to gain more attention to the Orangery with the local community of Clapham and develop proposals to spark a discussion as to how it could be developed. The team worked remotely to explore different methods of engagement with all interested parties. The team gained valuable experience in consultation and networking, and each method built on the lessons and feedback gathered as the process developed and the team became more experienced. We held a community public consultation event within the Orangery. The brief developed further throughout the consultation process to include the design and launch of a one year long website, www.yourorangery. com, a platform designed for continued engagement between Lambeth Living and the Clapham community. This website provides a resource which presents the historical, social and site analysis, sketch proposals for the site (organised A-D), potential funding streams for the project and a place where locals can sign up to be part of the ‘Friends of the Orangery’ group moving forward.
