This project shows strategies for designing case goods and furniture. It examines furniture and its design and construction process. I understand ergonomics and human scale; economy of material use; appropriate use of materials; fabrication and manufacturing process; and furniture traditions and materials. I have an opportunity to intensively investigate material, structure, connection and use and to synthesize them into a highly finished design.

With this piece, I reduced the chair to three elements: legs, seat and connecting joint. Such simplicity is true to the minimalist style, and the connection of a chair’s front leg and seat with natural joint was characteristic of this work. Through my disciplined approach, the chairs cantilevered seat is stabilized by a joint on the side of chair’s front leg that is precisely positioned so the body rests naturally without a hard front edge or top rail.

The slanted design makes this toaster an original. The slanted design seems to make putting toast in and taking it out easier. Even the buttons are stylish, users like how the right toasting levers align with the left levers. There are controls on either side and both sides can easily handle toast easily.
First, I am taking apart one of Sunbeam’s toasters to see what makes a toaster. I will be using the toasting unit that is in the toaster we have dismantled & fitting a new & innovative body to it.

SPARKLE Delightful reading lamp with unique appearance
ER
In urban life, people usually get tired after working. And we can’t deny that sometimes we were completely weighed down by the stress of a busy life. Therefore, we all want to relax as comfortably as possible at the end of a day. Nowadays, because of the life style, people always want to take a rest after work. And the best position to relax is lying on the bed. However, when we read books, watch TV or use a laptop on the bed, we usually ignore the person who is sleeping beside you. Actually, the light will bother that person when you turn it on. And maybe you will have some disputes because of this problem. To avoid this situation, we have to create a lamp that is adjustable, light intensity and angle. In this way, two users who use it at the same time would not have problems with adjustability and adaptability. The woman has a busy and active lifestyle. By the end of the day, she decides to relax before she drifts off to sleep.
She reads the magazine and does a little bit of yoga. Finally she turns off the lamp and goes to sleep. At midnight, she needs to turn on the light to pacify and take care of her children.
In the morning, she starts her busy day all over again. The woman has often worried that the light bothers her husband. They have some disputes because of this problem.

market assessment Today’s active 60-year old feels and acts more like the 40-year old of years past. 77 million Baby Boomers are driven by a powerful desire to keep a youthful appearance, stay fit and remain young in spirit. This unprecedented consumer demand has created opportunities for companies selling entertainment products and services.
In 2009, the entire games market in U.S has been positively affected by an increasing number of affluent retirees and older adults who spend more money on entertaining products which can improve their mental health and physical health than previous generations. At the same time the games market is undergoing an important structural transformation. Digital technology pervades in every aspects of life, which has resulted in new habits. One consequence of this trend is that many senior citizens replace traditional games with modern consumer electronics like digital games which has opened up the games market to new demographics such as elderly.

lifestyle trends
I have chosen to focus my research and design on active retirees. I find this group especially interesting as the demographic shift is monumental and global and the aging population will be more healthy, affluent, educated, and active than ever. They grew up during decades of radical social, technological and economic change and thus are generally characterized as being idealistic, ideological and innovative. I believe it is important for design to be universal and transgenerational, however, there is little focus on designing for this new aging demographic. Therefore, it shall be interesting to research and to find new design opportunities that addresses the needs of this group, whether it be communication, lifestyle, health, hobbies / interests, psychological / sociological, etc.

Number of Players vs. Level of Activity
Play entertainment and activities were plotted on a map of level of physical activity versus level of individual or group activity. The number of products in the upper right quadrant of the map is less populated; however, there are a variety of organized sports, which, if individually named, would increase the number of data points in that quadrant. Play equipment tend either to be physical in nature or sedentary, but not usually both. Dance Dance Revolution does combine physical with screen-based activity. The opportunity gap appears to include the combination of physical and sedentary activity - perhaps combining physical activity with electronic or screen-based activites would result in a more rich, immersive play experience. problem statement “ As one grows older, more and more challenges come up. These are mental challenges and motor coordination problems. Seniors become less physically able to do the activities that they had been able to do in the past. They therefore will be forced to become isolated from social activities and more and more disconnected as they get older. There is a requirement to involve retirees in activities that can be their source of fun and entertainment, and at the same time improve their physical and psychological well-being. a Family & Adult Psychiatrist, certified by Family Service Agency of San Francisco.
hypothesis If I can design a way to make activities more playful and pleasurable for active retirees, then it can engage them to do more activities and they can take full advantage of the value of play. This will improve their quality of life and maintain their physical and mental health.
36
ideation 1 Based on my research when the words “physical activities” and “play” were combined , the term was used to describe video games that are also a form of exercise for my users. Through interviewing and researching, I found that beyond repetitive finger movement, there is an opportunity to develop an interactive play system that provides whole body player movement, similar to that of “real-life” exercise participation for active retirees. Keeping the key point in mind, I came out with some initial concepts for my project that differ significantly from modified video games that promote physical activity. Instead of simulating play, my design will engage players in a real kinesthetic experience by using actual sporting and play equipment.
37
38
ideation 2 Based on the new approach, I started the ideation stage. A flexible interactive gaming system arranged on the floor or a tabletop concept was created. The system has a screen to provide some mental games, users can stand or sit around the display to join the game together. It will show some instructions randomly. Players need to follow the speed and instructions to complete challenges on different levels. Each of them has 3 chances to fault and competite with other players. The physical way of interaction truly could be an ideal way of play for active retirees.
39
These two storyboards are variations of a flexible interactive gaming system concept. It provides different movements for active retirees to play the game and allow different numbers of players to join the activity. I tried to combine different physical exercise that can benefit seniors’ physical health with their favorite mental games.
40
mock ups & testing
Some mock-ups based on initial ideation were built. These two mock-ups are full size study. I would like to know users’ acceptance of the product concept and anything needs to improve or not.
41
concept development Modular design concept The concept of modular panels allows active retirees to build a physical structure with building blocks. The interactive play system combines creative play and exercise, because users can arrange the blocks in an environment where they are easy to install. The modularity gives freedom to users to construct their own platforms with interactive panels in small or large rooms, and exercise with each other. They can also choose to arrange the panels on the floor, or against the table based on what part of body they would like to train.
42
user testing
I print out the game UI to show the game deign with papers. Let players can get the real playful feeling during testing.
I observe their movements during playtime. The product concept of this stage can achieve the goal of design.
43
concept development Based on testing and feedbacks, I start round three ideations. I found the modular concept has high acceptance among my target users. But I need to figure out how to charge all modular panels in minimum size to save the space. I also try to consider how to make the form of the screen more make sense. Easy to use and save space are key points in this stage.
44
After this reound ideations, the full size mock-up was built. I put wheels on the bottom and make the adjustable handle to use. At the same time, I draw the storyboard to show how to use the product. I would like

to know users’ acceptance of the new product concept and anything needs to improve or not.
45
The mock up was brought to active retirement community for testing. They discuss the final design with me and try to use it step by step. The gaming system combine modern artificial intelligence and play culture in a product that can be used in play, sports, health, rehabilitation and learning. It was amazing that the games brought lots of topics which is more valuable than the game itself. They were asked about details of the product as well. The feedback is positive.
