Hutong Landscape Transformation

Shared Space

2016/10/10-2016/11/30 Hutong is a typical city structure of Beijing in China since the ancient times. Even nowadays a large number of hutongs left from the past can be lived in,which reflects the wide applicabiliy. However, with the growth of urban populations, the demand for accommodation climbs. The low-rise houses in hutong cannot accommodate tenants comfortably anymore.Together with the privacy of siheyuan, there is few green spaces. Thus, this project aims to provide a more comfortable life for residents under the circumstance of not damaging the hutong.

This hutong is named Waxberry and Bamboo Slanting Street, which is located in first ring of Beijing and next to Tian’an Men Square and The Forbidden City.It used to be the residence at the foot of the emperor in ancient times.Nowadays, besides residence, the function of the hutong includes commercial, education, tourism and to name a few. Therefore, the populations here are very heterogeneous ranging from local tenants to businessmen and tourists.Because of the Ancient City Protection Plan in practice, hutongs in this region could not be pulled down and reconstructed in a large scale. Therefore,we are supposed to making use of every bit of space to create the public green spaces.

The process of removing the old houses in Beijing and the number of houses left are clearly indicate in these pictures. Before 1980,Beijing city remained the original structure. However after the Opening-up period, the ancient city reconstruction took the stage. Many siheyuans for residence were demolished and then occupied by modern commercial sites. Not until the end of 90s did the government suddenly realize the significance of the hutong to the whole city. Therefore, the ancient city protection became the main stream. Some of the hutongs surviving the demolition were homes for celebrities in the old days, and others are still residential places for citizens. So the ancient city protection plan ameliorates the present houses and the surroundings based on the precondition that the overall structure of the community should not be destroyed.

In June 1973, Shenzhen North Railway Station, which was called Sungang Station at that time, was established and had been put into use. This is the first freight railway of Shenzhen, which was used for being connected with Hong Kong, Guangzhou and other cities.

platforms and a series of facilities were built at the main stations. This freight railway played an increasingly important role in foreign trade.

There were 47 tracks in Shenzhen North Railway Station in 1987, including 2 main lines. The up marshalling yard had 24 tracks, while another 14 tracks were for the down trains, coupled with 9 fright tracks. Thus, Shenzhen North Railway Station upgraded as the first-class freight station.

In the end of 1990s, as the railway freight volumes between the mainland and Hong Kong decreased continuously, the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) decided to stop dealing with freight business in 2010. At present, Sungang Station has no starting trains.

The picture of this section presents high lines from the visual angle of Honghu Park. Activation of high lines provides vertical space of the park with more vigor.

This picture presents high lines from the angle of urban agricultural zones. Design of this part enriches activity space and types for neighboring residents. Meanwhile, this design is more green and environment-friendly. The picture of this section shows a spatial relationship between coworking space and high lines. The working space is reconstructed by discarded factories. After being combined with high lines and given new functions, the whole area regains vitality.

This site had been surrounded by urban villages. There was a large amount of waste, so the surrounding residents had no public activity space and they were also bothered by pollution. After the waste was cleaned, we made use of this empty site and built a pocket park. At the same time, the park was integrated with one part of the high lines. The circular stair in the center of the park is an entrance of high lines, which can satisfy different activity demands of residents.

Green Infrastructure of the City--Stormwater Park 2017/10/03-2017/12/20 This area was once a building material market filled with illegallyconstructed buildings. It also was a “dirty and disorderly ruralurban fringe. With development of the city, this area became a part of the urban area already. But due to mismanagement, functions of basic facilities in this city would be suffering from paralysis once the rainy season came. Now we rebuild this area into a stormwater park. On the basis of solving basic facility problems, this park can beautify the environment and improve living conditions for urban residents here.

This site has many problems, such as water pollution, back flow of seawater, damage of habitat, unscientific planning of land, etc. Among those problems, stormwater is the most serious one, which prevents people from entering this site. What’s more, resulting from problems above, this site cannot recover naturally. Thus the site needs to be reconstructed urgently.

The site gets drowned frquently when it rains. The water level goes beyond the warning line easily. The major sources of sewage are domestic and manufactural wastes.

Adults make up the most populations around the site.Due to several nearby schools, kids outnumber the senior citizens, turning out to be the second largest age group of the neighborhood.

Haikou has ample precipitation but with a low per capita water capacity, which results from poor rainwater collection and purification technique.

Apart from that, the site is low in center and high all around, so once there was a 50-year flood, half of the site would be inundated.

Through analysis of stormwater inundation, we figured out directions of flows and available roads under different inundation situations.

rainwater

city inundation

city sewage

At present, rainwater and sewage in the city are discharged by underground pipes. polluted river

Because of the limited drainages and pipes, large amount of rainwater cannot be discharged in time, which causes inundation. great quality of water

Diffluence prolongs the contact time and increases the contact area of waterflow with the terrain, preventing inundation and at the same time, purifying the water.

natural revetment

artificial revertment

Directly discharged sewage damages the river ’s ecological environment.

The rainwater and the sewage confluence into river results in the slow infiltration of the terrain.

Natural revertment betters the circulation of the river.

Design Element

Layout Under analysis of the current terrain and needed functions, we designed various water areas with different types.

Water Pocket

Within the water areas, natural roads for walking were interspersed. Under the condition of having no damage to the site, we placed geometrical activity sites to satisfy people’s abundant activity demands.

Emergent, submergent and floating vegetations metabolize the hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and other impurities from the water.

Water is transmitted from from type 1 pool pockets to type 2 ones.

Water is transmitted from from type2 pool pockets to type 3 ones.

Human Activity Analysis

open river boating fishing Out of the factor of natural geographical environment, solving the problem of stormwater in this city is a long-term task. But as the content of human being’s activity will change with times, so if we put human activity above natural layout, there will be a sense of floating and being detachable at any time.
