SLOW W W RETAIL T HE SIS D E SIGN
Empathy, Interactive, Hybrid Our wor ld is moving at a breakneck speed. Our goal seems to be working fast and living efficiently in order to save time to do more things. If this is the right way to live, why do we still feel lots of stress, anxiety and depression from ever yday work? Mahatma Gandhi said “There is more to life than increasing its speed.” My thesis is Slow Retail, an enriched and balanced life experience, p romotes b rand loyalt y, empathy, and self- recognition. She r r y Turkle also says “Without solitude, no empathy.” I believe slowing our pace to learn about ourselves is a ver y good way to enable us to develop empathy, to reach out to others and feel comfortable in our relationships. Shopping is necessar y and pleasurable but is usually exhausting and stressful. “Slow Retail” can help developing a comfor table rhythm where instead of counting the hours and munities, we savor them.

LEVER HOUSE S ONO S OF F ICE
Performance, Flexibility, Customer Focus SONOS is a electronics company producing wireless audios, devoting to multirooms music system to spread music in ever y corner. The company is going to locate their new workplace and music studio on the 4th and 5th floor of the Lever House building in New York City. An acoustical and light transmitting wall system was created after the site analysis in order to bring more daylight into the central of the office, and also provide acoustical value to their central studio and lounge space. The aesthetic and functional origami modular wall system generated a double height flexible, relaxing and social "concert hall" in the middle of the entire office, offering not only customers a space to experience SONOS latest products, but also employees a space to chat with others and refresh themselves.

CONCEP T According to the observation study of people’s motion in the library, I proposed and created a “Wrap and Rest” chin holding armature people can wear on their arm. The curved and twisted pathways can not only guide people, but also provide teenagers a explorative and dynamic learning and studying experience in Brooklyn. Various programs were provided according to the existing teaching, lecture and interaction session provided by the library, including, dancing, computer lab, group learning, conference room, lecture hall and etc. All the “rest” programs with various themes will locate at the end of the sinuous journeys.

THE HAPPY HIPPIE story-telling exhibition (group work )
Empathy, Interactive, Storytelling We’ve chosen to exhibit the Happy Hippie Foundation in Vanderbilt Hall. We were drawn to local issues that would be present in Grand Central Station, but would also grab people’s attention in a transitory space like Vanderbilt Hall. Homelessness and the effects of LGBT struggles are issues that you constantly see in transportation terminals, but ones that people tend to ignore. After looking at various organizations, we were really drawn to the Happy Hippie Foundation which covers homelessness and LGBT issues. It has a lot of press coverage due to its founder Miley Cyrus, which we think is great because it truly raises awareness.

Quincy came from a small town in the south and was bullied from a young age for being different. “I was always really quiet and more feminine, so people thought I was gay, but I didn’t want to be. My local church was really conservative.” During that time, he suffered from depression and attempted suicide. His life turned around when he found a supportive community at his fraternity in college. He found light at the end of the tunnel when other people began accepting Quincy for who he is. BROOKLYN NAVY YARD WAYFINDING DESIGN (GROUP WORK )
Systematic, Accessible, Legible The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a growing industrial city with a rich history. The Navy Yard’s growth has attracted many innovative companies, artistists and designers to create in one place. Along with new tenants constantly coming in, the BNY has been bringing in the growing interest of their surrounding community and tourists. In its making, the Navy Yard has brought fame to its’ uncanny arrangement of building numbers. We intend to work with the way finding and signage systems that the Navy Yard already has in place to enhance the experience of tenants and visitors.

analysis & proposal The numbering system of buildings have already been engraved into the history of the Navy Yard, changing that entire system would be like attempting to re-write history. Along with the building numbers, the disks that extrude off the building have become the aesthetic of BNY. Our new signage system respects that history and can easily be integrated with what already exists. It will create a consistant and coherent lanColor Zoning Map
guage throughout the entire yard.

The geometric folding element on the right hand side not only provides a space to place drinks or boarding pass while waiting to board, but also creates visual and physical barriers between strangers offering traveller some degrees of privacy . On the left part, a cantilever structured transparent glass panel extended form the seat allowing people to store their luggage on the floor with visual connection and saving corridor spaces.
