paths along rail green corridors
The site is located at Brixton, Lambeth, south of River Thames. It is a multiethnic community, with a large percentage of its population of Afro-Caribbean descent. The town center is known for a street market, which is nearby the transit hub. Because of the separation by the railway, the lands along are fragmented, misused, and semi-industrial currently. We plan to reclaim and utilize them by the strategies from considering energy, health, and ecology. Our study area is a west-east corridor go across Brixton, which mean to connect the old town center and a new town center that we create. This also creates opportunities for more affordable houses and industries. Resilence and sustainable strategies are adopted for supporting our design. In this project, as the urban designer in our team, I responsible for the site plan, the design of the old core, producing rendering and 3d model.

STRATEGY
Inbetween Space Corner Space Mass Space
Our study area focuses on the spaces proximate to the harsh edges in Brixton, caused by the transportation rail networks. The areas are dilapidated, misused, and are stark barriers within the community. In order to understand the spatial and physical configuration of this area, our team identified three different types of railroad spaces: open space inbetween the rail, space where the rail meets at a corner, and mass space created by several rail lines next to each other. Our strategy consisted of devising several design options for the three different types of spaces.

Because our corridor area is extensive, we chose 4 different areas along the corridor to diagram and show what these spaces will look like. The uses of these 4 areas organically emerged based on both our team’s urban and design strategy.
cultural & commerce
Our proposal is multi-faceted. It not only focuses on the physical and programing use of spaces, but it has an environmental component. Each of the 4 hubs will have a bigger role in the sustainable system along the corridor. In fact, we envision many sites, based on their location, that will produce different forms of energy and greening. These sites will not only provide environmental benefits, but will work together and create an interconnected sustainable corridor.

The study area is between NE 29th Street and NE 26th Street, which includes the Florida East Coast Railway. The railway splits the space into two parts. The site will have a good connection with downtown by the proposed Tri-Rail Coastal Link Red Line. The challenge of this project is to provide a vision and proposal to transform the site into a thriving, mixed-use, transit-oriented neighborhood. This project should have a positive economic impact while also enhancing the sustainability and resilience of the study area, surrounding regions, and the city at large. The Wynwood/Edgewood is a neighborhood with bold vitality and diversity. However, it lacks a critical accessible public space. La Plaza Civica is a welcoming plaza programmed to encourage outdoor activities and gatherings with layered open space and multifunctional green infrastructure. The Tri-Rail Station has conveniently located nearby the plaza, providing residents the opportunity to live car-free. The transit station also provides the rest of Miami easy access to jobs, recreation, and educational opportunities created from the project. In this project, my role was the team leader and responsible for the production of the site plan, 3d-modal, rendering, and analysis diagrams.

DAFFAN AUSTIN
The Existing Conditions
EASTERN CRESCENT - DAFFAN AN EASTWARD DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR AUSTIN 2018 | Academic Project | Urban Design | Team Work
Structure Plan The “Eastern Crescent” describes a large area of East Austin facing significant social, economic and demographic challenges. “Eastern Archipelago” is the preferred conceptual framework for East Austin. Imagine that East Austin will have several targeted development centers instead of radiating a unified development model from the city center. East Austin will be characterized by a large number of protected areas and agriculture, with several islands of population and job centers. Daffan is one of the new centers, which has a great connection with downtown Austin by railway, and rich green resources. We reshape urban contexts, multi-systems of roads and green space by following and extending existing roads, green spaces and water systems. By overlay of multiple layers, the appropriate intersections are selected as the town centers. We also look into two core samples, the rail station nearby the town center, and a residential neighborhood. In this project, as the urban designer, I was responsible for the entire design process, producing the site plan, diagrams, rendering and the design of the rail station core sample.

Shashi is an industrial city with a long history. In 1895, a large number of Western firms built docks, warehouses, factories and modern municipal facilities on the Yangtze River beach. After the founding of the new China, a large number of factories and ports were established. The site is separated from the urban area by the levee and becomes an island. A large number of industrial buildings remain in the land, which represents the development history of modern industry in the city, so they are preserved and utilized. The plan proposes to use the natural and cultural resources of the city to develop the creative industry supported by urban leisure tourism. In this project, as one of the main designers, I was responsible for the schematic design, producing 3d models and axonometric diagrams.

Human-scale Urban Fabric, Cincinnati, OH 2019 | Academic Project | ULI Competition | Urban Design | Team Work
28
Portfolio of Yuqing Yang | 2020
Perched on the north side of the Ohio River, Cincinnati offers midwestern ease and charm, plus a rich history of immigration and city building. The city links southwest Ohio, northern Kentucky, and southeast Indiana. Fort Washington Way (FWW) is an approximately one-mile stretch of sunken highway that cuts through the heart of Cincinnati, creating a substantial disconnect between the riverfront and the CBD, which is the biggest challenge in this competition. The way of connecting downtown and the riverfront is the main point. In this project, as the urban designer in our team, I was responsible for the site plan, making the 3d model, overall view rendering, and axonometrics. On the other hand, we chose the concept - assembly, which means pieces together the Cincinnati riverfront with a human-scale urban fabric to restore the historic systems of public exchange that made the city a mercantile powerhouse. The resulting intimate spaces better facilitate the trading of goods, ideas, and experiences. By assembling a critical mass of local businesses and their patrons across a variety of scales, the face-to-face interaction and social networks that fostered Cincinnati’s rich trading history are restored as the key to its future success.

The project plans to use two warehouses in the German Ruiji firm in the modern concession period to design a complex that integrates the metro museum, library, office and retails. The facade and structure of the two existing warehouses planned to be preserved and repaired. The plan connects the museum’s visit flow line with the subway station, reaches the roof through an extra-long escalator, and then guides the visitors by a spiral staircase and a ramp. In addition, the project also attaches great importance to the protection of historic buildings. After strengthening the original frame structure and creating two new atriums, the facade was cleaned and repaired. In this project, as one of the main designers, I was responsible for the schematic design, producing the concept sketches, diagrams, and 3d models.

Mythology Water Show Stage
The project is located in the geographic center of Wuhan, where the Yangtze River and Han River meet. The traffic situation is complicated, it is not only difficult for cars and pedestrians to reach, but also a highway crosses the site. At the same time, the plot is close to the waterfront, and the plan needs to consider flooding issue. The Yangtze River is the third largest river in the world and the mother river of China. The Yangtze River Civilization Museum is planned as a large-scale museum showing the nature, culture, and technology of the Yangtze River Basin. The design plans to link the museum with the river and the mountain in the south, then connect multiple urban functions at the same time to create a walkable urban central park. In this project, I was responsible for the design work and being the project Architect and manager for the entire design process.

The waterfront park has good natural vegetation that connects it to the museum's green roof. I want to use nature to hide artificial traces. By creating a large-scale urban nature park, the map of the Yangtze River, a miniature landscape of the Yangtze River Basin, visitors can enjoy the fun of measuring the Yangtze River in footsteps.

PLATANUS PARK
A Revival of A Century-old Stalinist Architecture Quarter, Wuhan, China 2017 | Real Estate Project | Architectural Design |Team Work 44
Portfolio of Yuqing Yang | 2020
In Chinese, Platanus means ‘Wutong,’ which means recruiting of talented people. The site is located in Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Platanus Park is a public space created for teachers and students, focusing on academic events, presentations, and forums, as well as degree-awarding and gatherings. This historical block carries the memories of generations. We renovated the entire area following the principle of repairing the old as before and shaping the spirit of the place, including the footprint, the red brick texture, the preservation of valuable Platanus trees, and the use of modern materials for improving the performance. By the detailed vegetation surveys, we marked the type, diameter, and condition of the total 412 trees, and 162 of them were carefully protected. In this project, I was responsible for the site plan, 3d-model making, and the architectural design of the new conference center.

By researching the existing buildings on the campus of the same period and the Stalinist Architecture style, to determine what the original structure, facade, and material should be.

Current Status
The facade has been renovated many times. It generally lost the original Stalinist Architecture features.

Restore
By following the principle of 'restore the old as the old,' the facade and material were restored. And the structure was improved to expand indoor space.
According to the purposed function, some of the buildings have a ground floor expanding without affecting the existing vegetation.
Conference Center
The conference center is the only new building in this project. I hope it could have a humble attitude to the historical buildings around. It has a post-modern and clean facade design and was carefully implanted in the site. The porch created a grey space to give a buffer between the green and the building. Nature and architecture could be both opposed and coexisting.
The glass wall of the conference room serves as a screen for the surrounding environment, and introduce the light inside. It gives a harmonious connection between nature and humans, between inside and outside.

Yinchuan is a lovely city, which is an oasis in the desert of northwest China with thousands of years of history. However, due to the inconvenience of traffic and the particularity of culture, Yinchuan has a relatively slow urbanization, and the designs of most residential quarters are similar. This project was directly arranged to me by the local government and planning bureau after I won the first prize in the Aiyi River Wetland Park Competition and was completed independently by myself. The community adopted an open layout with smaller groups as the basic unit. Inside of each group is a semi-private and safe area. The outside is a public pedestrian area. The public sector has two landscape axes that go north-south connecting the Eco-Park in the south. The community has a people-vehicle diversion system to create a quiet and safe walking environment. In order to distinguish from traditional residential, to avoid dull faรงade, adjacent buildings adopt different color combinations.

Due to the need of building a ventilation tower for the tunnel across the Yangtze River, the developer planned to build a complex on the site, and the height of the office tower should be not less than 200 meters. The site is located in the center of Bingjiang CBD. A planned park is close to the north side of this site, and a subway station is on the east side. The plan should be designed following the phases of tunnel construction. It was relatively difficult to make the plan. My role was the Project Architect, responsible for leading the entire design process and the Architectural design and 3d-model production. The site plan took account of the requirements of the CBD Urban Design plan, the commercial heat distribution, and the crowd density of the subway station, and reasonably arranged the tunnel management center, a substation, a shopping mall, and two office buildings(205meters and 160meters). The office buildings used a partially inclined design to reduce the pressure of the huge volume. I used a large-span Y-shaped steel structure at the shopping mall entrance to highlight it and attract visitors.
