LABYRINTH OF LIFE
Academic work Individual work Building type: cultural architecture Area: 2935.9 m2 Time: 2019.6. Year 1 Location: Suzhou, Jiangsu, China Tutor: Dong Chen Tutor email: chendong.sz@hotmail.com
Design concept: Architecture would only be meaningful when it could communicate with people, so it could also be designed as a presentation, a talk or even a life. The project aims to let people experience the whole life of themselves, which has the part of birth, choice, travel, illness, separation, reunion, death and rebirth. For people at different stages of life, personal feelings will emerge at their own path. Moreover, when you are reading your only “life book“, you might recall some memories, you might reflect on your future and past, and you also might miss someone you loved... Various touching spaces were created in this TIME circle by using architecture shapes closely combined with natural elements. Also, it is a place where you could revisit over and over again.

Keys to the labyrinth - book
From the paradise, to the empire, to the hell and the purgatory. It achieves the perfect combination of literature and architecture.
"After the game is before the game." Every small change in our actions can lead to countless different outcomes. The insignificant things can become the turning points of life.
The discourse of forking paths symbolizes time. There is no absolute and identical time. That is, several possibilities are coexisting at the same time and leading to different future and outcome. We can only choose one of the possibilities, and once we choose, we can never go back.
Life path is not straight to the end. It consists of multiple choices and dead ends on the way. And in the Labyrinth of life, it is a circle which finally brings you back to the start.

Academic work Individual work Building type: public architecture Area: 3600 m2 Time: 2020.6. Year 2 Location: Suzhou, Jiangsu, China Tutor: Thomas Wortsmann Tutor email: thomas.wortmann@icd. uni-stuttgart.de
Design concept: This project was designed to create a free integrated public space regarded as the city library in Suzhou’s old town area. The main design concept is the big roof covering four columns which play the role of dividing four different kinds of spaces defined by the intensity of activity and main targeted users: close, open, between and outdoor. The big tree-like roof with carefully-designed pattern openings on it allows the sunlight to go through, representing the knowledge going inside the library. Also, the outdoor part under the roof seen as grey space is more likely to invite people to enter the building. The clearly defined three indoor spaces offer innovative programs for various users, and indicate clear and free flow.

The big roof provide large shading and the transparent walls allow some natural light go inside. The pattern gaps also avoid the centre part of the site which receives the most sunlight and could easily get overheated.
The wind in summer mainly comes from the north-west, as the blue arrow shown in the plan, natural ventilation could be achieved.
Along the street side is most noisy, so D closed part is designed on the north side while B&C are more close to the street. Also, the greenery is also put near the street to block some noise and dust.

AT HOME, LIVE THE WORLD
Workshop Individual work Building type: Residential Architecture Area: 1410 m2 Time: 2020.11.Year 3 Location: Unlimited Tutor: Shiyi.Sun Tutor email: sibyl.sun@hotmail.com
Design concept: This project was primarily a vision of the future of high-rise residential buildings and was specially designed to deal with the global epidemic crisis. In the contemporary era of global warming, resource shortage, a biochemical crisis of virus mutation, and architecture, as a technological tool, could be used to solve multiple problems. In the design concept, this building is a relatively independent community ecosystem. It meets people’s life needs from working, shopping, socializing, getting close to nature, and so on. Efficient split lifts divide the high-rise into three different living modes: Elderly, Single(young professionals) and Family. They enjoy personalized homes and communal areas designed from the basic 3m*3m units. Close community atmosphere could also be achieved through the transparent Studios and flexible outdoor stairs.
14
Background In 2020, COVID-19 has caused a seismic change in the way we navigate our urban environments. Now with the coronavirus set to reshape the urban landscape for years to come, the vast pontential could be found to mould our metropolises, especially adaptable buildings. Current situation - general problems Traditional living mode _ two or more generation living in a house
Densely populated settlements _ due to urbanization and housing crisis
Low living conditions _ bad ventilation, low heating efficiency, lack of green space and sunlight
Complex construction process _ more durable & quick-built buildings are needed
causing infection among different ages
causing a high risk of transmission
causing harm to people's health so that immunity is reduced & bad environment for self-segregation
causing unsustainable future and Struggling to cope with housing demand during the epidemic
Coping strategies Common requirements
Main living mode classification
Special requirements for isolation life
basic living units
Single
Single people who work in the city living alone, young professionals or students
provide a sense of community in an isolated remote working environment & leisure time
sufficient sunlight & ventilation&greenery
Elderly
elderly people living on their own, single or couple
provide group interaction and amusement after retirement
quick access to medical facilities
Family
DINK family of 2 or nuclear family of 3~4
provide Parent-child space and allocated space respectively for parents&children
Design concept generation Antonelli: “I can be squeezed in a subway car and I still have my world.” In response to the severe spread of pandemic worldwide, a design proposal for a "vertical living world" is put forward. In this project, three kinds of living type are separated at different levels and connected with well-designed targeted infrastructure levels, forming a vertical neighbourhood with multiple functions. The residential area's modular design is also included in the project for flexible distribution need under various circumstances. This, along with the "first-aid" medical stops on each floor, allows for efficient circulation that reduces infection. High-rise vertical community(world)

SMALL VILLAGE REVIVAL
Academic work Individual work Building type: urban design Area: 21900 m2 Time: 2021.1. Year 3 Location: Reute, Bad Waldsee, Ravensburg, Germany Tutor: Antonio Berton Tutor email: antonio@on-design-studio.com
Design concept: This project was designed for renovating a small village in German called Reute. The current situation and potential development were analysed in detail. From four aspects in the chosen site, abandoned park, local workshop, new homestay for recreate centre and a special public centre for both religious and non-religious people, the new construction and business mode would bring new life to the village. This urban design is special for site’s religious features and could be applied to other European villages universally if suitable adjustments can be proposed.

Final vision
Analysis of current problems - potential for Renovation · Park Upgrade
· Workshop Construction
N
- The garden is abandoned due to poor planning and its remote location - The shops throughout the town are scattered, a market for locals&tourists is missing - Lack of modern educational&cultural infrastructure like mobile reading rooms
Main road
Germany has a long history of beer, the workshop is a place for visitors to see and experience local specialities like handicrafts, as a cultural and commercial centre. Beer factory, herb planting and bakery will be introduced in the workshop, the old place for convent plantation area would be considered for the site.

· Recreate Centre Upgrade
· Religious-or-not Centre Construction Main entrance into the village
- The number of elderly is creasing day by day - they need the goal of life after retirement
- Population of convent users is not fit to the volume of the building, resulting in large space waste
With the change of times, the number of religious adherents is decreasing sharply. A hybrid place for religious and non-religious is urgently needed along with centralised administrative services for the village. It also could be regarded as a landmark for tourists, a stopping point for pilgrimage people, a community centre for locals. Site for "Religious" would be considered near the convent and chapel area / for "Centralised" would be considered near the main entrance to the village.
- Nuns&local elderly have the skill of traditional crafts - They need company&communication need the fresh energy from young people need colourful community activities
21
People need a daily community centre for interaction. According to research, Only 40 percent of residents in small towns have a frequent get-together with family and friends, while the proportion rises to 48 percent in big cities.
Membership in Christian churches is projected to dramatically decline in Germany over the next four decades.People need a place for mediation and get away from daily life, which could transform from "religious building" to a more inclusive one.
Renovation Concept · Recreate Centre Upgrade
· Park Upgrade
· Workshop Construction
· Religious-or-not Centre Construction
Upgrade the recreate centre with new function zones division, building volume adjustment, indoor&outdoor space balance and circulation redesign for the whole Renovation Area.
Upgrade the park by integrating it with market area and reading space alongside the park path as commercial and cultural elements.
On the base of Convent plantation area, redesign the herb planting area, introduce the local beer production workshop and bakery experience into the site.
A centralised centre will be designed with distinct features that provide an inclusive space for religious people or not, the locals or not. There will be vertical function division for different kinds of people.

Two accommodation buildings size needs to be adjusted according to nun population, and one of Recreate Centre buildings needs to be demolished to allow efficient circulation.
Site section - geography elements could be used for "vertical" function division concept
The original path is remained for visitors to go through the whole park, small shops will be added along with it, letting people have the chance of getting close to nature.
Beer workshop and a bakery are added to one single-floor building alongside the street.
According to site boundary and the unalterable cemetery area, extrude the volume according to useable region line to fit the site.
lab greenhouse garden
Rearrange the accommodation of nuns, local elderly and the reception house for pilgrims into one service apartment and refurbish its solid walls into transparent facades.
Reading space is also considered. There will be dispersive reading rooms at the central area like in the wood, creating a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. It should be some distance from the market area.
Development process
The existing greenhouse garden, it will be equipped with the new Herbal Medicine Laboratory for nuns, allowing tourists to visit. walking path
Cut the volume with sphere to make curve on the back.
Unify the volume edge in same curve language.
Add new homestay project into the Recreate Centre to bring commercial development & conversation between young and old, local and foreign. Also, refurbish its facades in the same style.
The architecture appearing of the shops and reading stops are consistent with the transparent style and added with wood to be in harmony with nature.
The unplanned herb planting area on the north will be organised in order and added with walking path cross the fields for a visit.
Also use curve feature to cut openings up and down to introduce sunlight.
