Yuri Landman (1973) is an experimental instrument builder and musician. After a career as a comic book artist as well as a musician in the bands Zoppo and Avec-A, Yuri Landman began designing experimental musical instruments. Based on prepared guitar techniques, he built his first instrument in 2001 to solve the inaccuracy of instant preparations. In 2006 he got in contact with Liars. Developed over six years of prototyping, he fully realised the Moodswinger for them with commissions from numerous other musicians to follow. Yuri has custom built derivatives for such musical luminaries as Sonic Youth, Half Japanese, Enon, Lou Barlow, dEUS, The Dodos, Blood Red Shoes, Liars, HEALTH, Liam Finn, The Luyas, The Veils, Melt-Banana, Micachu & The Shapes, The Go! Team, These Are Powers, Kate Nash, Women, Action Beat, Peter James Taylor, Rhys Chatham, Dustin Wong, Philippe Petit and others. Around 2008 he started giving lectures and presentations with his instruments, leading to a request in 2009 for a practical building workshop. This became the rise of the Home Swinger project. A Gesamtkunstwerk consisting of a DIY-workshop where people build their own electric instrument and often followed by an afternoon rehearsal on the second day and a 40 minute ensemble performance with multiple Home Swingers, drums, basses, and guitars in the tradition of the Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca compositions. Soon after the rise of the Home Swinger Project, other building workshops followed, featured in this booklet. Events have taken place in AU, BE, CH, DK, FR, UK, IR, NL, SV and US. In 2012 Landman formed the 2-piece band Bismuth w/ multi-instrumentalist Arnold van de Velde. In the same year he started his infamous Strat Eraser Project to help musicians get rid off their useless gear. The Moodswinger as well as the Home Swinger are included in the permanent collection of the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ. The SONS Museum in Belgium owns another instrument of Landman.

1 - HOME SWINGER
May 17th 2012 Lyon FR Aug 18 th 2012 Leiden NL
The Home Swinger is a simplified version of the Moodswinger designed to be easy to assemble and play. It does not feature the slick finished design of the Moodswinger, but is exactly the same sounding instrument. Yuri Landman presents a 4 hour long Do-It-Yourself workshop whereby participants will leave with a finished Home Swinger instrument as well as a strong understanding of its structure and workings. The difficult soldering part will be taken care of by Yuri. Participants require no special skills and the difficulty of the process has been compared to building a piece of IKEA furniture! In advance of the workshop Yuri will prepare the component parts of the instrument for the participant to use in construction. These include: 4 pieces of ready shaped wood in the required sizes and predrilled with holes, easy to employ machine heads for the strings, one pickup (good quality, equal to Fender), an on/off switch, a jack output, a few screws, bolts and nuts and some metal for the bridges, as well as two sets of strings.
The Moodswinger, a predecessor The Moodswinger is an electric 12-string instrument invented by Yuri Landman. Developed over six years of prototyping, he fully rea-lised the first The participants pay for their own materials. Each workshop is Moodswinger in 2006 for the band Liars. limited to 16 persons.
Duration of the workshop is approximately four hours.
The Moodswinger features a uniquely designed string field that includes an extra movable rod (called a ‘3rd bridge’), which divides the strings into two sections. This string preparation creates mutually occurring resonance in both sections of strings, resulting in a sound more akin to a group of clocks and bells than the common sound of a vibrating stringed NEW: The Double Swinger. A 24 string two octave deluxe ver- instrument. The unique timbre of the Moodswinger has often been sion. Artists who own a Home Swinger are Micachu, The Luyas, These Are Powers, David Holmes, A Place To Bury Strangers, Ice, Sea, Dead People, The Go!-Team, Action Beat, Jay Malhotra (Kate Nash), We vs. Death, Zoppo, Thread Pulls, Signe Tollefsen, Susies Haarlok, Kapitan Korsakov, At No Bikini Beach, Jad Fair, DAAU, Ex-Easter Island Head, Foot Village and Wu Fei.
In 2008 Landman developed the Moodswinger II for Jessie Stein of the Luyas. The Luyas published their second album Too Beautiful To Work on Dead Oceans in Februari 2011 with four tracks played on the Moodswinger. Double Swinger

The Quickstep Kalimba 2.0 6
2 - QUICKSTEP KALIMBA 2.0 The Quickstep Kalimba Workshop features an electric version of an African instrument called Kalimba. This electric variant is handy to plug in any amp and to use at live performances. The tuning is adapted to the 12 tone common in Western music, but can be adapted to the traditional tunings as well if desired. Initially the Quickstep only had the 12 rods, in the up dated 2.0 version these rods have enlarged tailes that also can be plucked near the bridge and cause sounds remniscent of church bells. The Quickstep Kalimba is based on the electric kalimbas built by Konono No.1 from Democratic Republic of the Congo and the kalimbas of the band Neptune from Boston. The participants pay for their own materials. Each workshop is limited to 16 persons. Duration of the workshop is approximately four hours. Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo owns a copy of the Quickstep 2.0.
Above an enhanced 4 pickup version customized by Richard Eigner. The version on the main pic left can easily be upgraded this the one on the picture above. On Richards version both sides of the kalimba are amplified. 7

3 - CATERPILLAR DRUM GUITAR / SLIDE GUITAR
Jun 9 th 2012 Rotterdam NL
The Caterpillar is an instrument which can be used as a noise drum guitar in the tradition of Glenn Branca’s ‘Mallet Guitars’ as well as a convenient bowed instrument or a more traditional slide guitar commonly used in country music. With two drum sticks you can easily develop a percussive sliding technique with one stick functioning as a slide to select a pitch and with the other stick you hit the sliding stick. The instrument also functions well with drum techniques such as double strokes and bouncing. The instrument features two pickups. It can be used as a stereo instrument and creates a beautiful audio spectrum at recording sessions when two amps are being used. A switch can change the stereo signal in a mono set up which is easier for live situations. Three musical scales are drawn on the instrument that all together clarify the played tones and the harmonic positions. The color dotted series are equal to the system used on the Home Swinger. Two small movable bridges allow the player to select four fundamental tones. The participants pay for their own materials. Each workshop is limited to 16 persons. Duration of the workshop is approximately four hours. Melt-Banana, HEALTH, Women, Garçon Taupe, Philippe Petit (3) and Ice, Sea, Dead People own copies of the Caterpillar Drum Guitar. The instrument is featured in Women’s final Pitchfork.tv special, filmed just before they broke up.

The White Eagle Tailed Bridge Guitar
The White Eagle tailed bridge guitar is based on the Twister guitar Landman developed for Enon’s John Schmersal in 2009.
Enon 10
4 - WHITE EAGLE TAILED BRIDGE GUITAR The White Eagle is a tailed bridge guitar, which means there’s an additional amplified string field in the tail behind the bridge of the guitar. The instrument has two pickups. It can be used as a regular electric guitar when played mono on the normal bridge pickup. Behind the bridge there is an additional pickup. It’s a stereo instrument and creates a beautiful audio spectrum at recording sessions when two amps are being used. A switch can change the stereo signal in a mono set up. More practical for live situations, amplifying both sections. The string length of the tail section has a 1:4 ratio to the open string on the guitar section, causing bright overtones two octaves higher than the open string. On harmonic fret positions (5th, 7th, 12th, 19th, etc.) the tail area gives a beautiful humming harmonic overtone. On lesser consonant positions such as the 6th fret for instance, the resonance is more muted. With alternate tunings you can arrange desired harmonic resonances on specific notes. The participants pay for their own materials. Each workshop is limited to 16 persons. Duration of the workshop is approximately four hours. Dutch electro artist Rude 66 (Bunker Records), Sam Dook & Ian Parton (The Go-Team), Rhys Chatham and the two guitar players of The Van Jets (Belgium) own copies of the White Eagle Tailed Bridge Guitar.
5 - STRAT ERASER PROJECT They needed to be smashed anyhow. Send Landman your shitty cheap Tele or Strato replica and he will send you a White Eagle Tailed Bridge Guitar in return. He will re-use your neck and tuners. Pickups will be replaced for good quality new pickups. Any cheap guitar of brands like Stagg, Samick, Squier etc. is suitable, as long as the neck can be screwed off. Nobody will know what happened with the bodies after dismantling.

The Empire State Rocker family built in WORM Rotterdam NL, Dec 2011
12
6 - EMPIRE STATE ROCKER The Empire State Rocker is Landmans most impractical sized workshop instrument so far. The size of this instrument is approx. 2 meter (Âą78 inch). The body features a very worked out overtone scale up to the 16th harmonic in the top plate as well as a common Western scale on the big plate. Different from what the size might suggest, the instrument is not a bass instrument. It is mostly played flat on a table playing harmonics or with a slide playing it behind the slide, creating highly atmospheric enhanced tones. The picture on the left features twelve string versions with four clusters of three strings that are equally tuned.
7 - TRIOCHORD
May 17th 2012 Lyon FR
The Triochord is an enhanced version of the monochord/Didley Bow. All strings are tuned in unisono giving an excellent natural chorus effect. This instrument workshop is very cheap compared to the other workshops and therefore highly suitable to organise at music education centres and conservatories. The instrument features a common Western logarithmic scale as well as a scale of harmonics. Triochord with 12 TET Western scale and a color dotted harmonic scale

8 - Suprematist String Field Plates
Jun 15th 2012 Luzern CH
By far the most challenging experimental workshop in this booklet. Based on the Crosslander prototype (right) Yuri developed an impro workshop, where the participants are free to make their own unique instrument. Abstract art is not as useless as it might appear at first sight. The works of the Suprematism painter Kasimir Malevich coincidentally have a direct relevance for complex configurations of crossed strings to achieve a series of sounds not easy to create in any other way. In the spirit of Malevich’ paintings the particants design a composition of strings on a big wooden plate. Besides the visual appealing result of the compositions, the sets of crossed strings cause a wide diversity of complex sounds. In timbre remniscent of church bells, Chineze gongs and Indonesian gamelan instruments. On top of the string fields objects such as metal plates and springs can be added to create, even more radical, alternate sounds. After finishing the instrument, the good sounding spots are marked with colored dots and signs and a legend is added how to play the instruments.

9 - ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE
May 17th 2012 Lyon FR
The day after the workshops Yuri Landman will play his musical compositions with the group of builders and create an ensemble performance. The participants play two musical compositions, starting in a minimal structure one by one, with each introduction creating more sonic complexity and volume, resulting in a “wall of sound” crescendo comparable with the drone works of Sonic Youth or the symphonic guitar compositions of Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca. The festival is free to fill in the line up, but it’s a recommendation to include some trained artists as the backing band (drums, bass, guitar) to make the music more solid. Landman is often accompanied by multi instrumentalist Arnold van de Velde, singer/guitar player René van Lien, experimental builder Kas van Hoek, and other musical acquaintances. A wide range of known musicians such as Action Beat, Noël Akchoté, Bitches, Gaspar Claus, Sam Dook (The Go!-Team), Jad Fair, Wu Fei, Foot Village, Kapitan Korsakov, The Moi Non Plus, Jay Malhotra (Kate Nash), Jessie Stein (The Luyas), Craig Sharp (Ice, Sea Dead People), G.W. Sok (The Ex), Peter James Taylor, Thread Pulls, Sidi Touré, Dustin Wong (Ponytail), Jürgen Teller have joined stages. Performances took place in AU, BE, CH, DK, FR, UK, IR, NL, SV, US.

Jun 14th 2012 Offenbach DE Jun 16th 2012 Luzern CH Spring 2013 St. Petersburg & Moscow RU
Bismuth is a two-piece band consisting of Yuri Landman and multi-instrumentalist Arnold van de Velde.
This No-Fi two-piece band makes difficult music danceable. So, don’t expect soundscapes, drones, nor rock or pop music. Although sound artists are mainly busy creating soundscapes these guys groove. Most instruments consist of wood, metal bars, motors, strings and guitar pickups. Their homebuilt experimental instruments give us radical danceable beats, experimental grooves and harsch noise improvisation on top. All is created by sound on sounds looping, making clicks, bleeps and riffs. Landman was invited by Arnold van de Velde and Rene van Lien (both Neon Rainbows, At No Bikini Beach and ex-Feverdream) to record some songs in their studio in Rotterdam. While working on the recordings Arnold and Rene were often asked to join Yuri as a solid part of the ensemble performances. They joined Yuri in the UK, France and Holland for several shows. After doing many group performances with more than 15 people, it was time to make things more simple. No more carrying 10 guitar amps, 2 drum kits and multiple instrument. Yuri asked Arnold to join him for a gig on a Subbacultcha! show at Eurosonic/ Noorderslag 2012 which was the first gig of Bismuth. www.facebook.com/pages/Bismuth/348839058472460

11 - SPECIAL PROJECTS In 2010 Yuri discontinued his top line products such as the Moodswinger, the Springtime and the Burner Harp Guitar, due to the succes of the workshop events and the overpacked tour schedule as the result of that. Occassionally he makes exceptions and builts custom instruments for artists such as Peter James Taylor, Serge Verstockt, Lucky Fonz III, and the SONS Museum. The instruments are often made on location is a few hours, and some look crappy. Not the looks of the instrument, but the sound result is the primary focus with these experiments.

This instrument was especially designed and built for the boy in the wheel chair.
12 - SCHOOL PROJECTS Besides festivals, art spaces and venues, Landman also hosts practical workshop and performance events at schools. In the past Landman did school projects at several education institutes ranging from for instance the Royal Academy of Music in London to Special Education for kids with emotional or behavioral disorder or physical disabilities. INTRODUCTION TO MUSICAL THEORY The Triochord and the Home Swinger feature fraction scales and can easily be used as teaching instruments to clarify overtone theory and the relation between musical scales, maths and physics. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE Besides this theoretical part, the children/students learn how to construct electrical instruments. Often the kids can take the instruments home afterwards as a reward. STAGE EXPERIENCE A group performance in front of their friends and family. Landman has written an easy to learn composition for this event.

Nice Noise Nice Noise is a book to be published asap and is a guide about how to prepare a guitar. The book is written by Bart Hopkin of Experimental Musical Instruments (windworld.com) and Yuri Landman
NICE NOISE Modifications and Preparations for Guitar
64 pages, full color. “HOW DID YOU GET THAT SOUND?” Hidden away inside your guitar is a world of sounds, tone qualities, timbres, and effects that you’ll never find with conventional playing techniques. Some of these sounds are beautiful, some comical; some are edgy, exotic, subtle, raucous, mellifluous or strange. These are the sounds you can bring out with the prepared guitar techniques described in this book. The focus here is not on electronic effects; it’s on things you can do with your guitar to alter the ways the strings vibrate or the soundboard projects. Most of these interventions are easily put in place and just as easily removed, while a few of them involve permanent modifications that can take an old guitar to turn it into something quite new. Whatever type of guitar you play, this book will show you new and unexpected ways to play it. 26
