GOLDSWORTHY Principles of Design

OVERVIEW: After reviewing the outdoor sculpture and photography of Andrew Goldsworthy, sketch, iterate and construct your own outdoor sculpture (or similarly themed drawing, building, construction, etc.) that demonstrates your knowledge of the PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN. Â

1

I reviewed the work of British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy by watching the television show "Talking Pictures" the documentary "Rivers and Tides" and image searching online to draw inspiration for this project HUM312 Principles of Design-Goldsworthy Yuriy Bashtovoy 02.22.2016

Started to work on concepts in my sketchbook I wanted to explore different ideas, materials, and design principles to see if a strong direction presented itself. I explored the design principles of movement, balance, tension, rhythm, compression, implied space, grid, harmony, unity, and pattern in these initials sketches to help spark ideas. I also thought about using the range of materials that also directed my concepts. These material included rocks, wood sticks, different kinds of leaves, drift wood, pine cones, and even snow.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Snow provokes responses that reach right back to childhood. Andy Goldsworthy

I considered making this a family outing to teach others about the elements, principles and the art of Andrew Goldsworthy. I didn’t use any tools while designing, the materials and final object are100% natural. No adhesives, wire, string, etc.

Demonstrate your knowledge of the Principles of Design. Balance the overall creativity and beauty of the final sculpture with the number (breadth and depth) of the obvious Principles of Design. Construct an outdoor sculpture; drawing or construction obviously inspired by the work of Andrew Create a beautiful, dynamic and inventive outdoor composition Consider the form (full content) of the form: What meaning do the materials lend to the work? Consider using natural elements of temperature, wind, water, light, time of day, decay, etc. Avoid permanence and unnatural materials. MUST BE REAL-not digitally mocked up

I have tried different design iterations, one of them was design with embedded into driftwood stones which implemented rhythm, repetition, balance, implied space, but there were other different opportunities that were calling for exploration. Considering the elements of nature including how time, wind, temperature, light, tidal forces, precipitation, etc. that might impact the work and enhance it, I wasn’t waiting until the final weekend to execute my work because so many things may go wrong. Planning on embracing what the outdoors has in store for me as a collaborator, I was prepared to adapt my design.

Out of all materials I experimented with the most exciting and somewhat magic was burnt driftwood, which I got lucky to find in one of the Puget Sound parks. It is an organic material, which was polished by the water of tides and turned into objects looking like a stone. Those pieces I found have geological and historical memories in them and fun to work with. In my sculptural composition I have incorporated several design principles: pattern, texture, circular movement, duration (layers), balance, implied space between the sticks, dominant (black center) subdominant (lighter outer layers), and subordinate (light color contour)
