Human’s Nest Urban Gardening Project We live in a time period where the cities get into an unavoidable invasion of concrete blocks. The buildings are required to be built higher and higher everyday. This p ro ce s s re s u l t s t h e l a n d va l u e s to dramatically rise while repelling citizens from involving in nature related activities concluding a fragile relationship between human and earth. Human’s Nest tries to break this chain and give people a suitable environment for turning them back to nature and activities related to it.

Formation of Street Elevation

Axial Analysis of the Site Manipulation of Forms The project develops a criticizing approach to the sterilizing structure of big cities and creates an urban gardening typology that suits both for the people who are willing to participate in gardening, planting and harvesting activities and the people who are going to come here for other programs, which are farmers market, shops, communal working areas, cafes, restaurants and even medical center in the facility. When the overall sociologic atmosphere of Arnavutkรถy is examined, its highly noticeable that

there is a characteristic of the population which comes together in certain thresholds on the region forming a unique multicultural social fabric of its own. As one of the fundamentals of the design process was to create a similar sociologic sequence in the Humans Nest Project, it had been tried not to alienate planting and harvesting activities from daily routines of people but make it possible to integrate the production and consumption spaces.

For the Medical Center and co-working spaces, the circulation core is kept on the edge and the modules are designed on 3mx3m base to form larger enclosed spaces when joined together. On the other hand, for the plantation units, the circulation core kept in the center and the plantation volumes designed comparably small with their 160x160cm bases to allow daylight access to plantation zones while providing them to spread through branches in the capsules.

The cultural co-existence in the Human's Nest project appears to be the integration of production and consumption spaces.

Parallel to this aim, the form of the structures is also inviting and permeable, creating a public space just like program distribution. The outer shells forming the modules are aimed to create visual and spatial interaction with the inner courtyard by creating voids next to the Kireçhane St.

3.0 m

When analyzed from the section plane, these voids correspond to the slits and openings between the modules and aim to provide a perception of being transferred to a new space. Other than that, the final forms of the modules serves for providing a suitable environment for the plants grown inside and outside the structures by allowing daylight access and ventilation in many respects.

The modules that generate the distribution are basically composed of two elements. First; the internal modulating part consisting of the circulation core, specialized units and steel carriers. The second one is the shell structure which works like a facade on the entire modulation. The facade creates a production environment with many different characteristics by providing the required amount of light by inserting the wooden panels in the shade to some surfaces in accordance with the needs of the interior. With this and other innovative methods, I aimed at strengthening the idea of a new urban breeding aimed at the beginning by maximizing the plant species that can be grown in the interior. I have tried to avoid this alienation of people from their surroundings by synthesizing the inevitable needs of the breeding and the social structure of the region.

Spacial Requirements and System Solutions

One of the main concerns of the design process was to allow the structure to be used as a huge public space. For that reason the ground floor programs of the all structures are left for the easy access of the public. However, this situation required the shell-like covering of the capsules to be elevated from the ground and supported by the carriers of the modulation system. For this reason, space frame-like tie bar junctions are added between the interior beam web and the frameworks of the facade. To maximize the public usage of the easy access floors of the structure from the ground levels, programs added to the -1st floor, resulting the whole facade to gain a flying perception over the ground. The units below ground level allows spaces to serve in two layers. Such as the interior volume of a restaurant unit in -1st floor is being used as a kitchen and the roof of the same unit functions a seating area.

heights is motivating the residents to reach their housing units from very different routes from one public space to a semi-private one-, resulting them to interact with more neighbors in a large variety of space potentials. Next to that, the enclosed spaces of the housing block is offering the residents vertical circulation cores acting as shortcuts for reaching their own private unit.

Orbis Library for NisantasÄą

The concept of the project was not just to design a place with common library perception, but also to redefine “book and activities related to it. So, the function and the form has evolved according to this contemporary expectations and gained new meanings. So new spaces were planned for new activities. As the function of the spaces aimed to be diversified, similar variety wanted to be maintained

also for the perception of those spaces. Curved forms were used in contrast with sharp floor slabs to obtain dynamic angles. The circulation and programs were defined by the distribution of those curvy shapes throughout the building. While doing this, the common repetitive form for the curved parts are determined to be sphere.

Sphere is a shape that has a strong potential in answering the ergonomic needs of various spaces with its convex and concave surfaces. To obtain those surfaces with different angles, the design uses large variety of spheres with different diameters. With slicing those geometries into smaller sections from different parts; spaces with organic volumes have been aimed to be obtained, throughout the library building.

The fundamental form decisions are made according to the concept of abstracting the artificial and natural parts of the island. A wavy covering is chosen for the open spaces of the building to support this dynamic characteristic of the crowd. In order to create a contrast, a rigid and minimal appearance is chosen for the closed spaces. The materials of the cover and the walls are selected as timber and concrete, respectively.

Living with Rising Water

Inflatescapes The concept of the analysis and the production process was to develop a conceptual approach on peoples way of avoiding damages of a potential future flood both in Arles or another location in the world with similar natural threat and geographic characteristic. Existing Regulations with Financial Restrictions The triggering point of the design process was to criticize the regulations about financial obligation on society to build zone de refuges* with the cost of about 10 percent of their house in coastal regions of Arles and Camargue.

Tubular Grid Platforms Although the individual inflating units were answering the requirements of evacuation, securing of valuables and life safety in extreme conditions, it had lack of long term supply for people. So there was an unavoidable need for zones specialized for the inflating units to gather and answer their optimum needs in longer term emergency situations. As the whole tubular grid platform was acting as a constant air supply for units to prevent them from deflating after attached on, there are 5 more container units on the grid, which are: Water reservoirs, communal kitchens, bathrooms, electricity generators and medical centers, providing more sustainable solutions to longer term accommodations for the victims of that kind of a potential future natural phenomenon

Dolambac comes together with other cubes in various orientations to form a dynamic playground. This characteristic of unique framework and surface design offers personalized and limitless movement options to the users. Its modular build with waffle connection detailing serves many flexible purposes and provides this project with a remarkable nature of effortless modification and surface alteration applications. Thus, children as the main user population can easily change the design according to their personal creative narrative.

Modular Design Concept of the Play Space

Dolambac is a play space project that took place in Aydin, Kasaplar Village on July 6-19 in order to provide a space both for village school students and village kids where they belong to and can improve their imagination. For this reason, the first step was to anticipate the needs and potentials. This space needed to be detected by the children and be able to transform in the direction of their desires and the modularity of the elements made it easy to provide this transformation according to the needs and desires. The real aim of the design process wa s to ove r t h row t h e s te re o t y p e d ‘ p l a yg ro u n d ’ visualization and to construct a play space where the children can unveil their creativity. Instead of using playing units which give clear commands, other playing elements that allow children to explore themselves are used.

Design and Construction Process Week 1-2: Design and Modeling | Istanbul In this short period of time, the data obtained from the village had been processed. The potential needs, solutions and results were discussed. Through all those, the design ideology was shaped. As the form of the project was determined, the most crucial drawings were completed in a way that reflects its physical relationship with the village and, more important, with the average child scale. After all these, the design was approximately accomplished, so the physical and digital models were finalized. Eventually, the required measurements of the materials were determined for the future production process

Week 3: Revising and Production | Woodshop, Aydın Meeting with the people of Kasaplar Köyü and the students of the primary school. The measures obtained from the previous works had been revised with the data collected from the site. After that, all the timber pieces are produced by the students at a workshop in Aydin. Eventually, the final pieces were adjusted according to the connection system between each other.

Week 4: Assembly of the System & Presentation to Students | Kasaplar Village, Aydın The pieces are joined together. The system had assembled onto the previously prepared footings. The parkour is finalized with minor touches according to the safety of the children. The features of the project had been explained to the students. They came up with the suitable name “Dolambaç” for the project. Students of the Kasaplar Köyü Primary School enjoyed their new play space.

Design & Construction Yusuf Aras Kalkan Merve Akdogan The main aim was to design a seating unit that composed only by “timber to timber connections. For that reason, our starting point was using dowels for the connection parts. The main material of timber was taken from the left-overs of our schools’s design and built studio and used sort of a 3D frame. For seating part to be adjustable and ergonomic, a long elastic strap and three broom handles were used. The construction finalized with the assembly of the seating part to the timber framework.

Observations - ZERO 2015, Istanbul

What ? As we think about the direct definition by itself, “shadow” would be defined as darkness in a form of shape, caused by the absence of light. This brings the contradict question of “what is light?” or “are darkness and light representatives of opposite concepts?” It would be difficult and unwarranted to find certain answers to these questions. The best thing would be to take this “shadow vs. light” conflict into consideration to evaluate the artworks of Gunther Uecker, as accurate as possible.

Uecker works especially his big installations are usually disguissed in reliation to light and space. We are most fascinated with his most of the nail as a medium and his persistent expoliotion of it. (now for 50 years). For us the nail is an object loaded with meaning. Nail is a symbol of religion, that is, Christ's Crucifixion. Using the sharp and hard object the way he does, Uecker is able to make is appear smooth and nonthreatening. For instance, he creates large expanses with hundreds of nails driven into wood in subtlr patterns, geometrically arranged ot loosely scattered, forming lines, clusters or swirls, and casting shadows. These panels often appear soft and flexible reminiscent of skin with hair grass moved by the wind. The nails transformed from a rigid, theatening object to a part of a seemingly flowing surface. The nails become almost peaceful.

Human Mind As known, there are vision receptors in human brain to make seeing-evaluating proccess possible. But it is not as simple as that. These receptors do not only create vision but also shapes our perception aginst the world. Without our realization; our sense of distance, 3-dimension and perspective developes and we start to interpret the forms and figures accordingly -just like we do not see the form at the bottom as randomly drawn lines but as a 3 dimensional figure-. As people observe, the bond between human mind and artwork is created through this system.

If we look for the answer of the question “what makes an artwork aesthatic or unique?” the common answers would be about its color, technique or composition. So it is safe to say that a figure to represent something, it has to presence as itself in the composition of the piece of art. As the artist reflects his materials onto a surface, art starts to gain emotion and talks with the observators. But in Uecker’s style the proccess works a little different: He triggers the emotion with the darkness, “the presence of absence”, and the illusions he contains in his artworks. This side of his understanding of art concept does not make only his works significant but also makes him a unique artist.

Günther Uecker , Vlaamse Landschaapen 1967 Venice Biennale, 1970

“Our projects of today are the realities of tomorrow. Whatever exists in our imagination is on integral port of ourselves. Experience is imagination carried over into the sensual sphere. Immediate experience comes only when we ourselves participate. To obtain widest participation, the production of art must cease to be limited to the individual, as it has been till now. Technology as a medium of composition offers great possibilitiesin the formulation of aesthetic information. Since imitative values cannot arise here, originality is un impaired. Thus the creative element in the phenomenon of movement is preserved. To render the development of a movement visible as a dynamic state is a significant action. It is not a matter of routine but fertile in its repetition, in its very monotony, like the experience of prayer. My objects constitute a spatial reality, a zone of light technology to overcome the personal gesture, to objectify, to create the conditions for freedom.” Gunther Uecker, "Text", in: ZERO 3, Dusseldorf 1961; Reprint ZERO 1-3, “In the beginning was the nail, which seemed to me to be the ideal object with which to model light and shadow - to make time visible. I incorporated it into my painting. An it forged a link between the works and the space around them. It protruded as a tactile feeler from the flat surface, much like a sundial. A language of light and shadow emerged from the cumulative diversity.” -Gunther Uecker
