INTRODUCTION

0

Atelier 3xD looks at the urban environment, at what users want and expect from public and private space, and at how careful design can enhance the users experience of their urban environment. It is therefore about using design to endow urban form with qualities such as privacy, security, safety, belonging, comfort, sustainability, or protection of the user and the environment. The architect of urban form uses physical design and ownership to alter impressions and perceptions and thus enhance these desirable qualities. Of course, the particular qualities chosen will depend on the use the land is put to, and will change as one traverses between public to private domains. The 3xD Atelier enables one to be quite free in theoretical and design methodology. It relies on mapping data, which is why it can lead to a wide variety of methods. Indeed, the idea is to detach oneself from the traditional vision of mapping which is mapping territory by taking it a step further, abstractly mapping information, from scientific data to artistic/emotional data. Thorough investigation of the territory was carried out using this method. This helped develop an agenda that forms the initial manifesto. This manifesto was the basis of forming a building programme which developed into a set of resolved schemes.



INVESTIGATION

1

This is a year project that has three parts includes Investigation, Development and Resolution. The first part will focus on the site’s history and research to make come up with agenda as a team, after the group agendas we then took the research further into individual approach that will be the foundation our the year long studio project to design a building that engages the city context and architecture discourse. After the investigation the research was then taken in our own way, here I present the highlights thats relevant to my project. Within the atelier, five groups were emerged to investigate the river and surrounding valley and form a manifesto. Individual investigations of a more specific area determined by the group manifestos. Our individual programmes and sites were researched and investigated to develop the final set of projects that you are about to read about. This led to a variety of different projects but what they all have in common is the Irk River Valley.

Mapping the historic isolation of the irk valley

The Irk Valley has traditionally been seen as an industrial area and a major site of production, following the decline of heavy industry in Manchester the Irk Valley became redundant and the industrial buildings filling the site became functionless. As Lynch (1960) would suggest when a site is lacking ‘customary boundaries, we lose our grip on things’. Without a purpose the Irk valley drifted into disrepute and neglect, the industrial past is now only visible in the remnants of the failed technological utopia in the polutted river and abandoned industrial buildings. “The Industrial Landscape that existed was composed of artifacts and a spatial order that reflected its use as a site of production. A conecptual order was overlaid on this physical world, and in turn facilitated the reproduction of that space through laws, regulations and standard operating procedures, that ensured industry remained its primary use. Moreover the imagination of industrialised landscapes formed what people believed happened their - productive work that supported the families of the city Alongside images of the dark and allicit activities that accompany industrial Landscapes as transient spaces.” (Schneekloth 2013) As Corner (1996) states ‘measures facilitate possession’, as a result of more stringent environmental regulations and a changing economy it was no longer feasible to keep the Irk Valley as a site of production. Without a purpose the site became functionless “The place is void of urban sounds” (Schneekloth 2013). Despite several attempts by the city council to regenerate the Irk Valley the territory remained disconnected from the city. 10

Regeneration schemes

Regeneration Scheme - A proposal for a new viaduct to divert traffic from the city center as well as a proposal to build housing under the viaduct to create more green spaces to connect the city with the Irk Valley.

Regeneration Scheme - Manchester City Council introduces new transport System plan, a Complete new layout for city center roads, ring roads and motorways, managing traffic in a centralized city. Irk Valley is Enclosed between 2 viaducts.

WHY HAS NOTHING CHANGED ON THE IRK VALLEY? This is especially prevalent considering Manchester city councils last regeneration scheme which planned to spend 27M on the irk valley to turn it into a leisure park with playgrounds allotments and better maintained environment. the question kept arising of where did the money go and why nothing has been done

Middle space can be described as an unknown space within the city as the public struggle to define the space as an urban or wild environment. As you move through the urban setting you recognise elements such as offices, shopping centres and the constant movement of people, but the further you progress up the site, you enter the unknown this been the middle space. A lot of the familiar elements, which come to gather to create an urban environment, are evidently missing. As you move around space is clear to see businesses have moved away from this community, creating uncertainty and breaking the seamless connection what would have been urban and wild working in a cohesive way to create a more natural transition space.

Historic Inspiration: Vauxhall Garden + Viaduct Proposal

It was the focal point of the garden where the well heeled of the day dressed to impress and be entertained. 
“ On Sundays and holidays makers would come on horseback from Moston and Ancoats and one advertisement states that `excellent grass for horses is available at moderate terms’ - especially as it was grown in the same soil as the giant cucumber shame that the industrial revolution seems to have brought this period of history to an end’.

Owned by the Co-Op Run by the Public As part of the programme and who owns the place, I wanted to use the Co-Op ethos in how they manage communities. Rather than having temporary places for their community activities, this could be their focal point whereby all the community surrounding the irk could gather and exhibit their culture. By introducing park and ride. ‘Free’ it was one of the best solution the place can have not only does it work for people who work around the river irk but it can incorporated with places around sites.

The official site that I am designing was originally a garden where people from all over the area around used to come during weekends to relieve some of the weekdays work, show of their latest gadget, drink and most importantly the garden that was the communities were using. All of these what they had in common was the communities working together. Therefore I wanted to bring back these history to the site by introducing the inhabitable route where people will connected as well as a place to host events, market space and good transport system.

Initial Scheme The proposed scheme is to create a vibrant space for the community of the river irk neighborhood as well as for commuters who may park their car in the area. The proposed scheme is therefore presented here in making models, developing through sketches and looking at precedent for inspiration, and to further investigate spaces, as well as working what best material will work for this environment and aesthetically. Before resolving the building arrangement I will look at what best routes that will work. To find best experiential journey around the site here I experimented with 1:1000 site model to get sense of the journey how it will over blend with the site.

After arranging with how the routes will work around site I then experimented designing a building that will be functional as well as having a good form in appearance. Since I am dealing with car park the scale of the designing was challenging because designing your typical car park meant it wouldn’t be experiential, therefore after numerous attempt and looking at precedent for a lot of inspiration I managed to start with a basic sketch model. I was inspired by how UNStudio designed the Mercedes museum in Berlin and following their technique I was able to find my own technique in approaching my design. Here I present sketch model that were important to the final outcome of the design.

Dietrich Klose After the first model it was apparent to see there was a lot missing in terms of what I was aiming for. However that didn’t stop me from developing further until I found scheme that will tick all the boxes in bringing everything together to work cohesively. Therefore I worked further in developing another scheme with less space wasted. After discovering how car park are designed it was then a lot more approachable in designing aesthetic car park that would appeal to people. The digram above shows the possibilities in designing a car park. After the first one didn’t work as I expected I then made another model in to experiment further.

Scheme 2 Looking at precedent and sketching wasn’t enough, therefore I had to research in how the initial stage of design was made and applied that to my design. Here I present how UNStudio worked in delivering a successful project and how that method can be applied to my design. Above is the other design method that I incorporated in my design, as the first one was not working as I imagined. The next stage will be how to finalize this and apply materiality and form in order to bring out the fun side of the project.

In terms of materiality I wanted to achieve a monolithic finish as well as the structure being exposed to show the building mass. However the technology I was going for was challenging to find a precedent that might be in similar environment. One of the closest technology I came across is this building ( Above ). and the following statement was via email by the architect and me.

The yardmasters building is a ‘thermomass’ concrete building. It is made up of precast concrete panels prefabricated off site. Each panel has two layers, an inner structural concrete layer and an outer thinner biscuit concrete layer. Between them it is insulated and a proprietary plastic dowel system that holds them together. Details are readily available of this system. In this building because of the pollution on the railway tracks there was no requirement for operable windows. This allowed us to achieve the window detail you see. The biscuit outer layer accepts the front face of the window. We worked this out from first principles

Below is how the building looks like once put all together, since the car park required a lot of structure I used it to my benefit in order to bring out the structure stand out more and make that visible. For that I continued style throughout the building from the canopy at the tram stop all the way to the facade of the building.

After busy day at work here (1) you have the multi functional space that can be used for the events as space for all types of events. Just like the Vauxhall Garden used to be. This space is reintroduced for event to take place like it used to be.


As proposed earlier I wanted to utilize whats already there and bring back what was lost withing the site in a more modern approach. The movement of people as well as the vehicles, public transport and minimize this movement by parking or leaving the vehicle outside of your final destination. Therefore by taking further the Viaduct proposal that was on the news 1828 it then gave the place identity as well as being a sustainable place. Below is the current proposed route whilst the right is the one proposed almost 200 years ago.

Market / Tram Stop One of the idea I was going for when designing the market space is that it will act as something to bring the community together when the other half of the building is not use. Or perhaps when a commuter is a hurry could just grab something on their way to work via here and on to the route.

Parking Here is a view of the car park, you can see how its not typical straight leveled floor rather it is sloped, and also how natural light comes into the space with its unique quality.

Multi Functional Space Here we again see how the space can be turned into a wedding space during the day or booked whilst is not in use host other events. One of the other things i was going for is to make the space for small sport activities such as yoga for people to exercise probably after work. So the don’t have to go home get changed to go out again. Rather after work they can come here straight after work and exercise. On the technical drawings you will see how this event space is then turned into yoga class. 84

Reconnecting the river irk

To finish of the presentation, I started of asking how we can utilize movement within city. And looking at the isolation of the river irk. The map above shows the possibility of what the river irk can look like in the future and how the irk can be reconnected to the community by introducing a more sustainable transport within the site. As well as the transport, to also have a picturesque landscape whereby people can gather, using the landscape as a public realm and parks. For the neighborhood of the irk.

Community 1.46 Community is felt to be all around us yet it is not tangible. The boundaries of what this word means and where one might find a community continue to blur day by day. Indeed, whereas communities could have been determined by geographic location at one time, this is not the case today as digital communities begin to emerge in cyberspace. In its most basic form, a community is a group of people who have something to share with one another, whether that be goods, services, knowledge or even a common ideology or ethic. In atelier 3xD, the community that we are dealing with is one that shares a common disconnection with its urban surroundings. Indeed, during the industrial revolution, communities within the Irk Valley were thriving as a part of the great industrialist city that was Manchester. However, these communities have been in decline in an economic and social sense since the industrial revolution gradually developed into a digital one. Our architecture is one aimed at urban revitalisation, to serve and strengthen the community that surrounds it. However, we do not necessarily associate this with reconnecting these communities as some projects deal with positive isolation.

Inhabitable route How can we utilize movement in urban areas to be more sustainable? Since the site had a lot of movement from cars to pedestrians I wanted to introduce park and ride ‘Free’ Experiential space. The best way to make use of the site and its rich History, the River Irk, Vauxhall Garden and the three towers. Introducing the routes will make the site more Appealing to its users and the Community surrounding.

Continuing our group manifesto I wanted to use the whole site including the river irk and the Vauxhall garden as my main site to place my interventions. As group we wanted our manifesto to be working towards the public good with consideration in preserving the sites heritage. We also wanted the environment to be one of our main focuses when designing therefore sustainability and using what’s already there was part of our initial concept, by complimenting the river as a natural feature.
