Abstract A fusion of obsessions, Architecture, encompasses culture, traditions, styles through its form and gestures. In the past two years studying at SCI-Arc, I developed my interests in soft materials and imagery resolutions. In observing the softness in materials, captures it to be the gestures in architecture, then zoom on a satisfactory resolution to glance and experience the spaces in between. The works in this portfolio demonstrate my interest with a diversity of elaboration under different topics/conversations in architecture. These works show the evolution of obsessions of me in architecture field.

Ghetto Film School The ghetto film school looks at the non traditional ways of learning in film industry, the new balance of the learning environment took place in these overlaying spaces, soundstages and controlled classroom that require higher floor clearance are set at the positive spaces through the layers and the negative with its impression of the massing became the supportprogram for this dynamic learning experience. This project with its informal quality created a soc ial landscape for student to interact with the learning of the curriculum through the void and the elevated view of the ground it provides a variety ways of learning in the ghetto film school Instructor : Mira Henry

Design Studio The informalities of the massing model sets laid out on the site, pressing down on the sand and the pebble makes the impressions on the ground for the instructional program. The silhouette of the set and the relief on the ground became the experience of the Los Angeles Ghetto Film School. Over the top of all and attached to the column that rises from the ground, the sun shading mesh and its loose edges took the informalities of the green frame from the quilt. The Bent Slabs The Housing Project For our housing proposal located in the neighborhood of Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles, we adopted the bent slab typology and utilizing the quality of materiality. The pairs of soft and rigid slabs are copied and rotated. The resulting posture creates two buildings with a central courtyard condition that extends the existing park space next to the site. The corrugation emphasizes the slab type and generates unique facade conditions and spatial configurations of the units. The ground is elevated to create parking space, retail space, and residential lobby tacked under the blanket surface. The steps descend from the park side to form an amphitheater, creating a theatrical space utilizing the two buildings as an urban backdrop. On the street side of the housing, the ground is “squeezed” out to generate small urban pockets for the public to gather in. Partner : HaoNan (Rita) Duan Instructor : Ramiro Diaz-Granados

The Perks of Being Intellectual A comparison of St.Thomas Aquinas “The Real Composition of Essence” with Chinese philosophy and Hegel’s “Substances and Subjects” Philosophy I Instructor: Graham Harman

Fig 1. Hegel's Portrait

Design Studio

Fig 2. St. Thomas Aquinas's Portrait

Spring 21

In every culture/religion, some stories suggest how beings were created, for example, Adam and Eve from Christianity; Nüwa, who uses earth to complete human form originated from Chinese Taoism; Mangacyacileb from the Yami people, who assigned bamboo and rocks as the essence of the beings. These religions/cultures created their followers and communities with the stories that explain the birth of humans. Moreover, stories create "essence," which is considered intuitive thought merged with substances of the universe. The influential philosopher who lived in the medieval era, St. Thomas Aquinas, established the theory of the "essence" of which participated in the "existing" participating. With the concept of God as a central belief, St. Thomas suggested that only God, Jesus, is formed in the essence of its own. Therefore, Jesus is infinite. However, the beings in reality, including humans, are all finite due to the limitation of the participated's essence. St. Thomas's theory explores the timeline and causation of essence and existence. Furthermore, just about 2000 years before St. Thomas's essence that participated in his existence, the unpacking of the essences took place at warring states period of China, of which Wuxin; metal, wood, water, fire, earth; was established. Wuxin was the concept developed from the observation of the weather, and later on, developed to be essential, and eventually applied to every existence. Both St. Thomas's theory of essence and the Chinese philosophy dissects the existence into its components. Two has a considerable difference regarding the authorities in these essences in existence, which created legacy in a much

different sense. To break it down, even more, the German Idealist Philosopher, Hegel, proposed a theory to consider existence and essence in a broad vision, which gives the quality of infinite toward human thought. Hegel's theory might compose this antithesis of St. Thomas's theory that only God is infinite, in a brutal way. However, it verifies St. Thomas's idea byby explaining God's essence and form regarding its substance and Subject. In St. Thomas's theory of essence and existing, there are these two big categories of essence participating existing, God and human, in which the significant difference is infinite and finite. Since God is just itself, therefore the neverending idea came along with the existence of God, which itself could always subsist the existence. However, the essence that is participated in the existings is lack of authority to itself. Every essence that is put into the existence of beings exists before the composition. In contrast to God, humanity is never an original piece, but like a collage art, the uniqueness is formed through the composition. In this theory, humans are never able to subsist our form. Our existence relies on another being, which lets the beings be finite, therefore to composed this community that one needs others, and more needs God to survive. St. Thomas's theory has a powerful sense of Christian religion from establishing the super-powerful ability of God being infinite. However, this statement is not mainly to describe the importance God, but to compare how weak

99

beings on the earth are. The essences are posted as the beings start to exist. This theory adds on the causation relationship of beings' existence does not have the authorities to decide itself. Although beings in the world are finite and weak, St.Thomas suggested through the learning of essence, intellectual beings like humans could create the existings that participate. An example of the mythology and scientific facts could be established at the same time using the words of description, adapting the essence of the world. It could both be understood and somehow believe its realness, since the existence of the essence is real disregard if the composition is. Therefore the facts of essence are so powerful as they could be recreated with artificial nature. However, does that suggest the realness of existing beings is not essential and almost not worth time to look at? The theory established the relationship of the essence and existing instead of comparing each. Moreover, St.Thomas wants the intellectual beings to acknowledge the weakness of itself is, therefore to have the desire to understand the essence that is participated and appreciate those before accrediting the existence.

In addition, intellectual beings would intuitively understand the concepts of essence and especially those in God, added to the theory of St.Thomas. In his statement, it is critical to understand that all beings are created through difference and also that God has all of the essences that humans possibly have. Furthermore, under these circumstances, it is possible for humans to find resonance in different beings and relate back to God, who has it all. This process would begin with human started to exist on the world, and has the desire to learn, which happens throughout the entire life of human, and even if the human does not want to learn, there are possibilities that human would have interacted with the essence that resonates with themselves, which indirectly learned the facts the essence in human. Moreover, it seems to be impossible to have absolute zero resonate with one the others since all beings were being born with one the other, which created the concept of community. This resonance idea is not only being used to learn the essence and also for humans to search for others who have a similar frequency. This word frequency is more to describe the emotions and interest of a person

Fig 3. Diagram of Wu-Xin

Design Studio

Spring 21 given out to one another. However, some of the theories described it as the actual vibrations, for example, the famous book, The Secrets by Rhonda Bryne. The feeling of intuitiveness coexists in Hegel's theory of "Substance In Subject." Hegel developed this theory within a close look into human behavior in knows and feels. To observe the substantiality of the universe, those are the immediate moments to acknowledge the truth of the existing. Within this knowledge, substances are the seed of thought and mind, which drives the consciousness to conceive values. To value the Christianity example from St.Thomas with Hegel's conscience, Hegel would not have got any problems with the forms of this religion since it originated from substances that were absorbed. However, Hegel would have seriously questioned St.Thomas of God's existence as his own essence, which he can subsist himself. Hegel explains the relationship of essence and form as causation and not equality. If one's essence is precisely the form itself, it loses the ability of cognition of alien beings, which is meaningless to discuss the topic of essence and existence. However, this comparison would only be valid if St. Thomas's reference of God is a basic form existing. If the reference of God in St. Thomas's theory were just a relevant ideal to be encouraged to discover the essence, it would just be seen as a slight matter. It would be this question of form that causes St.Thomas and Hegel's conflict. In Hegel's theory, form is the actuality aspect of essences. Essences are expressed in immediate substance or pure self-contemplation. It rationalizes the form through its intuitive connections, just like St. Thomas's theory established humans could learn the essences, therefore creating new beings or objects. In Hegel's theory, Christianity is human's elaboration of the essences that were learned, which later became a form for the community to believe. The substances, therefore, became a noticeable item for humans that is intuitive to absorb its

origin, which is the essence. These essences later developed to be formed, which consists of the entitle, Subject. Hegel did not specify if essences composed humans since his perspective, in theory, is always human-central. However, the community features are being brought up in his theory in referring to substances in religion. The idea of religion weighs heavily on interactions of humans, which is necessary for one to interact and learn the essence through other human forms. St.Thomas and Hegel's theory added up to explain the comprehensive theory of micro items that makes large things. The connection of equality of substances and Subject is composed in this causation of essence toward form in Hegel's theory. In contrast to essence, which is the most originated form of the particle in the universe, form can be dominated by humans more easily. Moreover, through the dominance in form, the extensions of essence alternatively became objects that can be adjusted. Intellectual beings like humans have the desire to control more than itself, the world, culture, and other beings, however the essence that has become controlled by humans normally turns out to be fake and lack of realness, which does not seem to belong to the world. Instead of becoming the author of the composition, in Chinese culture, which unpacked the essence to be 5 specific elements, and has developed to be the methodology that human subsists itself to with modification in essence. Not in the way to change it, but adapting other objects/beings to create the balance. Wu-xin( 五 行 ) are the term for the essences of the chinese philosophy, by the word meaning, wu ( 五 ), is the number five in mandarin, which says about the five essences, and xin( 行 ), means form. The self-explanatory term, wu-xin, started with a statement of 5 balanced essences that exists, and was not specified with the subject. Moreover, the now-known, medals, wood, water, fire, and earth are being observed throughout human history. These five essences each deduce one and induce one

101

of the other essences, in the way there is not one that’s better than one the other. Through this concept, the Chinese philosophy has developed its agency to determine the essences of each object/beings. For example, Zi-wei-dou-shu uses the data of human history to came up with the method to use the birth of human to calculate the essentials numbers of one’s life, and finds the number to the corresponding wuxin. Therefore to know what is lacking in their life. Furthermore, to use other objects such as crystals and food to adjust the essences. The act of adjusting is developed because the substances are determined to be vulnerable, and need one to complete the balance in existing beings. This concept can also relate to the other theory of philosophy in Chinese culture, yin-yan. The famous concept has a straightforward diagram of black and white in a circle, which has a dot of color in each. The idea of the dot exists in one the other, says about the indefinite definition of binary, and indicates the vulnerability in each which needed another to make it complete. The Chinese Taoism philosophy of essences explains the detailed features of each substance, which left the desire to adjust to humans. Suppose St.Thomas explains what is the relationship of essences and existing, in the parallel world. In that case, Chinese Taoism philosophy interprets the essences as the agency that aims to create the balances. Moreover, for this concept of elaborating essence as substance, Hegel would agree on developing the new method to deal with the forms. However, regarding its realness, Hegel would give a great reason to explain why people would agree and follow the concept.

In Chinese Taoism terms of essence, it strongly relies on the acts of balance and has the idea that other objects could subsist the weak part of the essence. If we are to use St. Thomas's perspective to value this concept, we will see the similarities in an opposite way of interpretations. Taoism starts from the existing then to discover

Design Studio

essences. St. Thomas's theory started with God's powerful being with the essences then to create form. However, both theories explained a causation relationship of both and certified a strong relationship that both. However, in St. Thomas's perspective, the Chinese philosophy of essence is possibly a sin, which humans are trying to be comprehensive as God. He never defines the specific features of the essence but keeps on explaining the causation of the essence of existing, which Chinese philosophy finds the twoway path in these two terms. St.Thomas never established the essences could be if he tried to define them, it would have ruined human's ability in knowing and resonating the essences. Therefore in St. Thomas's perspective, the idea of wuxin will not help humans acknowledge how small we are and the facts that we are finite. Nevertheless, these two's conflict is not as important as to explain essence and existence, since it came from the much different backgrounds of two. Christianity only has one God, and all the others are following the world that he creates. Taoism says that everyone can be infinite if they practice enough and later on become the state similar to the God of Christianity. One set the world to be finite and obey one, and the other set the world to become infinite. The difference exists from the essence of each. Hegel explains this as the self-consciousness isn't on the right to believe, or the form that developed from essences does not resonate with the community. The background is the key. The self-consciousness of humans needs to be relatable to the form created. And if the essence that's elaborated as the form it would be critical to value its simplicity, since the universe in contrast to human is pure and unmoved, a mess interpretation would cause difficulties in believing form. Also could be explained by St.Thomas theory that all these essences participated in the existences are participating in this world, the essences are critical and irresistible that the difference must exist; therefore, the approach in

Spring 21 each would be supporting the form, even if it all using the similar concepts and tries to explain the statement of the human world. Although St.Thomas might not agree with wuxin, his theory explains why the differences exist and how critical it is for us humans to acknowledge the essence and become intelligent. Intellectual beings came to this world with the senses and essences from a long history of the evolution of the world. The philosopher always tried to understand how the world, humans, and beings are born like St.Thomas, using essence and existing to explain beings’ actions and existence. Hegel dissects the relationship of subject and substances with never-ending proposed reasons. And Chinese Philosophy in which to be adopted in human life. All of the philosophies are to make a strong sense of self-consciousness of our own. Nevertheless, it is for us to be sensitive to the essences that resonate with us therefore, to have a better understanding of ourselves, almost like writing our own user manual through a series of experiences of life. Green Expansion The SCI-Arc campus extension Green-Arc Institute (GAI) and Sustain-A-Life (SAL) designed by GAIA Innovations proposes the renovation of two warehouse buildings in the middle of the arts district in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The site is flat, and currently has a street crossing in between the two buildings. The project proposes closing the street to enlarge the spatial connectivity of the campus and allowing the incorporation of natural elements into the site. The city’s nature doesn’t tend to incorporate many parks and vegetation woven throughout. We hope that this proposal will not only indicate the benefits of these types of changes but also promote others to consider natural elements in their construction, and sustainability of materials in the construction process. We strive to advance the well-being of humanity and the environment by promoting sustainability in our actions and research. The building’s sustainability breakdown is filtered through six facets: Energy, Water, Wind/Air, Materials, Site and Land, and LEED & Title 24. Each one independently manages a portion of the site’s sustainable process yet works together in a myriad of ways.
