THOUGHTS ON HOUSING

POLITICS

The provision of housing for the less well off has been dominated by the state for over sixty years. Despite some moves to increase choice for tenants in the 1980s, policy in the UK has been characterised by a desire to control the suppliers of housing, without ever giving tenants true autonomy or providing them with decent housing. Peter King, Choice and the End of Social Housing

COMMUNITY

'Change Life!' 'Change Society!' These precepts mean nothing without the production of an appropriate space. ...To change life, ..., we must first change space. Henri Lefebvre, Production of Space

Robert Owen, New Harmony, 1825

The Paris Commune, 1871

OWNERSHIP

Life and porperty, being and having, person and thing are pressed up together in a mutual relation that makes of one both the content and the container of the other. Roberto Esposito, Bios: Biopolitics and Philosophy

PRIVATE PROPERTY:

The origin of the possibility of owning the means of work and production. Owning a piece of land, a working tool, or even a house, was understood as having the potential to own the labour of people.

The defination of 'Private Property', revised by Karl Marx

Hannes Meyer, the Co-op Zimmer, 1924

PRIVACY

It is a transitory space where the control of the public sphere ends and the control of the private home has not yet begun. It is a space where no one is watching, where women close their umbrellas, men loosen their ties, children drop their coats and dogs shake water out of their fur. It is a space of transition between the openness of public space and the enclosure of the home. Philip Ursprung, The Fragile Surface of Everyday Life, or, What Happened to Realism?

Johannes Vermeer, The Little Street, 1658

Alfred Hitchcock, Rear Window, 1954

COMFORT

Away with comfort! Only where comfort ends does humanity begin. Adolf Behne, Die Wiederkehr der Kunst
