NEW BREEZY POINT RISE | May 2013 Scheme Development

Hurricane Sandy Breezy Point, the beachfront community at the western end of the Rockaway Peninsula, was one of the areas worst hit by Hurricane Sandy. Decastating floods were followed by a six-alarm fire, which destroyed a hundred and eleven houses. Breezy Point is also, almost literally, one of the city’s most tightly knit communities: some three thousand houses, many of them owned by Irish cops and firefighters, tend to be passed down through generations. Scale: 1:392.8

Deformation magnification: 1.000 Case: L1 Case: A1 : Analysis case 1

By connecting the corner of the houses, which are the strong points of wood structure, the connects create a diagonal system at the alley within a block. The system will provide stronger support for the house structure, can also give opportunities for the shade design, public facilities within block and integrated green system. Scale: 1:392.8 Deformation magnification: 1.000 Case: L1 Case: A1 : Analysis case 1

Structure Simulation Using GSA to stimulate the movement of the houses under flood attack. The black lines are location of the houses before the flood while the red lines indicate the movement after. By adding more connections between houses ( compare first and third diagram ), we can see the houses are intending to stay where they were. ( compare the second and fourth diagram )

Today, over 50% of the world population are living in urban centers. With a brutal contraction of time and space, not to say a complete disappearance of the notion of distance for data transmission in the Information Age we have arrived again to the notion of Delocalization. So why are we paying so much rent to live in the center of New York? Despite the high density of cities and fast development of technology, do people get much closer to each other? Do we know more about this world? Here, This is where we need a building, a new school building that will affect the young and the old, affect the past and future; as a physical interface contextualizing virtual information into a physical space, negotiating between dimensions, and in return producing information and knowledge.

NEW SCENARIO BETWEEN COLLECTIVE AND INDIVIDUAL | Aug.

INDIVIDUAL? INTROSPECTIVE

2012

COLLECTIVE? EXTROVERTED

The individual refers to a private, introspective experience of viewing art; while collective experiences refers to social, extroverted experiences of viewing art. Individually collective and collectively individual are the transitional experiences from purely collective to purely individual. Our analysis and research into camouflage, the site and Dia Beacon, reveals subtle and latent experiences. Accordingly, the design focuses on a new gallery scenario - activated through user movement, new experiences become apparent. The experience of appreciating the art varies from individually collective to collectively individual. It's sort of a hybrid, dynamic and radical way of rethinking how artwork is displayed and how people could have diverse experience in the gallery.

How do we deal with the rising population of informal dwellings? In China, the new town urban design is always an intriguing issue. Context, transportation, programs and facilities make a city fully function. Green, mountain and gardens are generally not considered as urban elements. By bringing these different elements together, a new town experience has been created. In this way, they cultivate new kinds of urban landscapes, new kinds of urban experiences, and support a wide range of social interactions and relationships. They help build up communities.

Building

Cluster is one of the most important essence of Chinese architecture. Different combination of simple houses will create interesting relationship of positive and negative space as well as new circulation. In this design, the site is located in a traditional Chinese architectural environment. Surrounded by rivers, small houses and quiet lifestyle, the building intents to merge into the atmosphere, provides a peaceful space for patients to recovery. To design an environmentalfriendly building and also meet the needs of a complicated medical circulation and various departments layout requirement is the main challenge of this design.

What is the place of BIM in architecture? Is it only meant for production, or can architectural design benefit from the real time feedback available from Building Information Models. BIM can, and will change the profession, this generation is responsible for how that will be.

HY-BIRD HOTEL | Apr. DENSITY

Numerous types of birds migrate through NYC during Spring and Fall. This project is to create a structure within the existing city fabric. The structure components change throughout the year to simulate different types of natural birdnests.
