Situated in the West , this project entails demolishing a single detached house from the 1980s and re-constructing it as a pair of 3-storey semi-detached landed house for a pair of clients. As the building front was west facing , the client was very concerned of afternoon soon and heat gain. This result in adoption of a double layer brick as a thermal barrier as main facade , and re-configure the living room to locate at the rear , which was unusual in Asian houses.

The client of this project approached us with the intention of re-building his existing 2-storey semi detached house in order to have all his children move back home. With that in mind, the new 3-storey with attic semi-detached house was designed as such 2nd and 3rd storey layout plans are similar to a 4-room condo, where these floors are self-sufficient with kitchennette, living & dining , balconies and laundry areas.

Client’s love for wood also led us to design a facade that is cladded with timber look alike cladding. In order withstand the Singapore tropical weather, we chose a cladding that is made of portland cement and cellulose fibre composite . However, due to budget constraint, facade was revised during construction stage.

FRESAFETYREGULARSATON WORKSBY

The proposed development is a teaching block on the campus of SP , which primarily serves as the School of Engineering (also known as T12-12A). Our renovation is mainly to upgrade the building’s overall fire safety provisions to the prevalent fire code and that includes, existing staircases , new fire lift lobbies and fire lifts, overhaul of existing fire provisions and etcetera.

Due to budget constraints and ongoing school operations, the fire safety design will be undertaken on 2 levels - a more overall general level and also at a localized level. In this way, we will be able to dovetail the scope of works more systematically with the other consultants who will be working on the smaller areas within the building block.

Conservation building re- purposed as F&B.Hotel tower integrated with a podium of 2 storey retail/ F&B and 4 storeys of car park

This mixed development by Katong Group consist of an integrated podium of 2 storey retail and 4 storey carpark, a 10 storey hotel tower block as well as renovation to an existing conservation building along East Coast Road. With two hotel operators i.e Boutique Hotel Indigo by IHG and Holiday Inn Express , the challenge of this project was to design one hotel with 2 unique hotel room layouts and a cohesive facade but two different look allowing each hotel operator to have its own identity.

Located at the junction of Robinson road and Mccallum street, the client have approached us with the request to redesign the existing site from a 4 storey podium block into a office tower with a 5 storey podium integrated with mechanised car park system , retail & F&B outlets. As this project was awarded to O&O in 1995, we wanted to maintained the austerity and form that won the SIA award then in honor of the late owner. With that in mind, the design concept heavily depended on the late owner’s legacy and his passion for art.

During the design exercise , I came across a few design challenges which includes :

• Convincing the client to adopt the Green Mark incentive

• Fulfil URA landscape replacement area.

• Achieving min. car park requirement as well as LTA ‘s queuing length due to site constraint.

• Incorporating M&E service as well as structure requirements.

With the rapid metropolisation of city centres, the client had the intention to create a ' Shangri-la ' heaven for senior citizens and city dwellers to escape from the urban environment. With that in mind, we paid great attention to the layout configuration and spatial experience of the overall development . As architecture is incomplete without its landscape, we approach the overall landscape concept , transition journey up till to plant selection with great finesse, in order to complete the 'Shangri-la' experience.

Master plan & architectural design

Site A : 1 basement carpark with 11 residential towers

Site B : 1 1/2 basement carpark with 2 basement level retail, 4 storeys of open and enlosed mall.

Located within Shanghai 5th ring road, the town overall population is relatively small due to its location. In order to boost local population , we were engaged to design 12 blocks of varying height residential apartments and a shopping mall . As the client had requested colonial / art deco architecture style for the residential buildings, a lotus inspired motif was designed not only as a building ornament but also serve as an emblem and branding strategy for the overall residential development.

The mall , on the other hand , was split into 2 sections; an open and enclosed mall. While the enclosed mall is designed to be modern and miniimalist, the concept of a Victorian street mall atmosphere was adopted for the open mall. This resulted in a challenge to juxtapose the old and the new language in this development.

SENGKANG LRT

Programme 8 storeys unmanned substation

This project was an A&A to an existing Armenian Substation that was built in the 1970s. As the building was very old and there was a budget constraint, the works were limited to internal MnE services overhaul, fire safety upgrading and noninvasive facade renewal works. I was only able to take over the project during BP/ RI stage and see the project through to CSC completion.

Working with LTA and a local contractor, this was a design build contract to enlarged an existing maintenance workshop within Sengkang LRT depot. The existing workshop was single storey and this extension was to allow for a larger space to repair and maintain the LRT carriageway .

25 storey hotel block (192 rooms) with 5 storey podium and single storey basement

This was a public tender to re-develop the existing Maritime house to not only continue providing accommodation for seafarers but also serve as a one-stop destination for international training, research and forums. Naturally, this result in a tower and podium configuration to have some separation between the required functions.

The podium ,composed of a mixture of cladding and glass fenestration , will primarily house auditorium, training rooms and offices for the seafarers. Mimicking the wave form , the podium was purposedly setback to create a curvlinear form to enliven existing streetscape and create a sense of entry.

As the site fronts east, the hotel rooms were orientated towards the North and South to be climate responsive. This allowed the back of house services such as Lifts, staircases, linen and store rooms, to be strategically placed along the east-western façade to act as heat buffer. In addition, hotel corridors were also able to be naturally ventilated .

Continuing the wave concept onto the tower block ,the waves were tesselated into zig-zag pattern, allowing the hotels room windows to face different vistas.

HOUGANG

Part of Hougang rejuvenation plans, this project led by WP entails of a series upgrading works, such as linkways, public facilities, amphiteatre and so-on around Hougang neighborhood. This project was led by my colleague, and i contributed to the overall amphitheatre and surrounding landscape design.

The existing Harmony Park are clustered with small circular pavilions and exercise spots throughout the site. Continueing with this tradition , the new amphitheatre was designed to take the circular form of which both ends are occupied with either seats or stage. In addition , a new green roof is provided to allow users to have sheltered passage to surrounding HDB blocks.

Enclosing this new amphiteatre are a series of vertical screens in timber colour to blend in with surrounding landscape but also serve as plant creepers support.

TENGAH HDB

Sewing in with the larger urban concept of Plantation farmway of Tengah Town, the precinct was designed for tranquil lving in a park with the pre-designated public quadrangle, piazza and central green spine dividing the site into half. Working around these parameters, the 1000 units HDB and community/ retail hall was strategically placed to weaved into these pre-proposed green.

To minimise the wall like effect of HDB blocks, we also orientate the blocks to face NS, creating secondary small pockets of greens/ activities in betweenfor local residence use. Furthermore, the blocks were staggered across the site to soften the urban edges. Rounding off the whole design to match the given theme, we adopted the plantation leaves and its uprising effect for the facade treatment.

Master plan & landscape design

Mixed used development

The driving force behind SCH is essentially about creating a place where community and nature blend. It is about providing the surrounding communities with a space where quality of life can be enhanced, relationships can be nurtured and nature can flourish.

Our design for the sloping site expresses the need for a sensitive landscape design. This necessity is divided into two components, the old and the new landscape .In attempt to seamlessly weave the two aspects of greenery, we took inspiration from the 'Hanging Garden of Babylon'; a metaphorical interface which binds the two different ecosystem together.

This solution employs various strategies to allow the existing flora to be integrated with the proposed greenscape. Where the mature trees are preserved, courtyards are designed around it, and the architecture 'meanders' away - a direct response to the brief which results in a very compact and harmonious design. This ‘strategic waltz’ between building and nature continues to express itself in various forms i.e. green terraces, overhangs, roof, and facade.

Collectively, the ensemble conveys an advantageous dialogue between man and nature; an architecture which seems to emerge from a wild landscape.

The Clubhouse

This facility includes functional areas like member's lounge and slot machines, clubhouse, theatre and spa etc. All these entertainment facilities from different agencies are integrated for more efficient operations and synergies to benefit both users and management.

Meanwhile, an elevated link bridge is designed to create connection with the activity rooms in the Porch which houses all the functions for training, enrichment, interest groups, arts, and conferencing activities.

The Canopy and Sports Hub

Both the hawker centre and sports hub were allocated along the Canberra link as both centres are not only noise generating but also serve as a visual frontage for the site as well as MRT users looking down.

The Porch

CC & SCC had independent arrival points for convenient drop off and pick up. Placing the CC and SCC next to each other, hopes to increase interaction between the generations. Internal courtyards and shared gardens within also promote connectivity between the SCC and CC users.

The Porch

The PCC is located near the park and also adjacent to the SCC. This relationship is essential to provide medical support to the SCC. The park can be used for rehabilitation and wellness purposes, benefiting PCC patients.
