Tarimi Nulay–Longtimelivinghere was commissionedforourcentenaryyear (2020)asachoralAcknowledgementof Countrytocommenceourconcerts.

With TarimiNulay,DeborahCheetham (musicandwords)andMatthewDoyle (thetranslationintoGadigal)havecreated aworkthatexploresaprofoundcultural andspiritualreflectionofthelandon whichwesing.

TarimiNulay waspremieredintheDawn Chorusperformanceonthestepsofthe SydneyOperaHouseatthebeginningof 2020andhasbeenheardinperformances wehavegivensincethen.Ithasbeen programmedtobegineachconcertinour 2022seasonandwehopethisspecial piecewillbepartofSydneyPhilharmonia performancesformanyyearstocome.

DeborahCheetham AO –YortaYorta, soprano,composerandeducator–has beenaleaderintheAustralianarts landscapeformorethan25years.In2009 sheestablishedShortBlackOpera,devoted tothedevelopmentofIndigenoussingers. In2010sheproduced PecanSummer, Australia’sfirstIndigenousopera.In2014 shewasnamedanOfficeroftheOrderof Australia,for‘distinguishedservicetothe performingartsasanoperasinger,composer andartisticdirector,tothedevelopmentof Indigenousartists,andtoinnovationin performance’.Hercommissionsincludethe majorchoral-orchestralwork Eumeralla–A WarRequiemforPeace (2019).

GiacomoPucciniwasbornintoadynastyof churchmusiciansandwouldhavefollowed inhisfamily’sfootstepshadhenotcaught theWagnerianvirusformusicdramathat ledtoalifeinthetheatre.

Puccinitookoperatothenextlevelafter Verdi’simpressivecontribution,becoming amasterofwhat’sknownasverismo opera–seekingtobringeverydayrealism toagenrethathadbeendominatedby heroicandmythologicalsubjects.In verismoopera,chorusesappearonlywhen there’sadramaticreasonforthestageto befilledwithsingers–genuinecrowd scenessuchastheriotouschorusinActII of Labohème.

Puccini’soperasyieldrichdividends whenitcomestochoralgems–fromthe TeDeumattheendofActIof Tosca tothe famousHummingChorusof Madama Butterfly.(TheHummingChorushasan uncannyresemblanceto‘Bringhimhome’ from LesMisérables –Ithinkweknow whichcamefirst!)

Tonight’sconcertwasconceivedaround thejuxtapositionofoneofPuccini’searliest works,amasssettingforthechurch,and hisfinalopera, Turandot.Whatdothey haveincommon?Amasterlytouchwhenit comestowritingforchoralforces.Inthe MessadiGloria,wehearhimfindinghis ownvoicewithanodtoVerdiandacertain theatricalflair.Bythetimewegetto Turandot,wehearceremonialmusicfilled withareligiousfervourthatis,attimes,

reminiscentofchurchmusic–grandhymns totheemperorandanalmostchant-like useofthevoicesintheatmosphericand impressionisticMoonChorus.

You’reinvitedtoponderthesetwo aspectsofPucciniaswepresenthissacred andsecularmusicsidebyside.The theatricalityofthechurchandthe reverenceofthetheatre.

ABOUTTHEMUSIC

Puccinioncequippedthathehadbeen ‘touchedbythefingerofGod’,butthatthe Almightyhadinsistedthatheonlycompose forthestage.God,ofcourse,wouldbe wellawareofthecommonoriginsofboth ritualanddrama,andthat,farfromthe devilhavingallthegoodtunes,someof thegreatestmusicalmonumentstoreligion intheWesthavebeentheworkofgreat operacomposersfromMonteverdiand HandelthroughMozarttoVerdiand Britten.Puccini’sfamilybusinesshad,for fourgenerations,beenthecompositionof liturgicalmusicintheItaliancityofLucca, soitishardlysurprisingthathisMassfor fourvoiceswithorchestra,betterknownas MessadiGloria,shouldmarktheendofhis apprenticeshipasastudentinLuccain 1880.Awatershedpiece,itcontains artefactsofPuccini’spastandfuturestyles. Itdisplaysayoungcomposerwhohas masteredthetechniqueofcomposition, andonewhohasaninnatesenseofthe dramainherentinCatholicliturgy.Sadly, Puccini’sMassfellintoobscurityuntilits rediscoveryin1950.

Theunhurriedcounterpointofthe instrumentalintroductionmightdistantly recallthepolyphonyofPalestrina,butits effectispurelyPuccinian,andthe Kyrie thatgrowsoutofthiscontainsseveral waysofaskingformercy,assupplication, asurgentdemand.

Likemanycomposers,Puccinitreatsthe Gloria asamulti-movementstructure.The openingpaeancoulddoservicefora happyoperaticcrowdscene;asolotenor stepsforwardtoofferthanksonbehalfof

humanityinthe Gratiasagimustibi (wegive youthanks).ThereisaVerdian‘calland response’tothe Quitollis (whotakesaway thesinsoftheworld),andasolid affirmationoffaithinthe Quoniam (foryou alonearetheHolyOne).Thesection comestoaclosewithafuguecelebrating theeternityofGodinthe Cumsancto spiritu (withtheHolySpirit).

The Credo,whichPuccinicomposedin 1878forasaint’sdayfestivalinLucca, likewisefallsnaturallyintocontrasting sections;theaffirmationofbeliefrecounts importanteventsinthelifeofChrist,aswell asofferingavisionofthelifeoftheworldto come.Thus,theopeningstatementisin unequivocalunison;themysteryofthe incarnation, Etincarnatusest,lefttoaquiet tenorandchoralaccompaniment.The Crucifixus offersaworldofdarknessand pain,andthereisacorresponding Wagneriancelebrationoftheresurrection.

The Sanctus iscalmandlucidbeforethe moreactiveacclamation‘Plenisuntcoeli’ (heavenandeartharefullofyourglory);as conventiondictates,the Benedictus (Blessedishe)isgiventoasolovoice,here thebaritone.Tenorandbaritonecombine inthefinal Agnusdei (LambofGod),a movementwhosemusicPuccinire-usedfor themadrigalinActIIofhisopera Manon Lescaut –anotherexample,perhaps,ofthe blurredlinebetweenmusicforthestage andforthesanctuary.

Theamazingfame,inourowntime,ofthe aria‘Nessundorma’fromPuccini’slast opera Turandot,isareminderthatheisthe mostrecentcomposertohaveadded severalhighlypopularoperastothe repertoireoftheworld’soperahouses.His MadamaButterfly maybethemost performedoperaofall.But Tosca and La bohème arenotfarbehind.

PuccinisharedwithVerdi,hisgreat predecessorandfellowItalian,agiftfor melodyandaninstinctforenhancingwellchosenplots.Hewasstillinhisteenswhen heandtwofriendswalked35kilometres fromhisnativeLuccatoPisaandbackto hearVerdi’snewopera Aida.

MoreoftenthanVerdi,Puccinimadehis protagonistawoman,evokingfeelingfor herplight–forCio-Cio-Sanin Madama Butterfly,andforMimìin Labohème.But ToscaandTurandotprovethatPuccini’s femalecharacterscouldcommandtheir owndestiny.Evenbeforeup-and-coming composerslikeMascagnirevealedtheir hallmarkdramaticrealism,Puccinishowed ittoo,buthisscopewaswiderandhis musicalinventionmoreoftenmemorable.

Tosca

TheplaybyVictorienSardouonwhich Puccinibasedhisopera Tosca wasinspired bythegreatactressSarahBernhardt. Puccini’shighlydramaticmusicgoeswith scenesoftorture,attemptedrapeand murder,culminatinginamockexecution thatturnsouttobearealone.

SetinRome,theoperawaspremiered therein1900,ahundredyearsafterthe actiontakesplace.TheFrench

RevolutionaryconquestofRomeandthe PapalStatesisbeingoverturned,andthe reactionariesareinpower.Escaped politicalprisonerAngelottitakesrefugeina churchwherethefree-thinkingpainter MarioCavaradossihelpshimtohide. Tosca,afamoussinger,isthepainter’s lover.Thechiefofpolice,BaronScarpia,is searchingforAngelotti.Helustsafter Tosca.

CavaradossiisfinishingaportraitofMary Magdalenbasedpartlyonanunknown blondewomanhehasnoticedprayingin thechurch.Toscarecognisesthewoman astheMarchesaAttavanti,andsuspects herofbeingCavaradossi’slover.Scarpia inflamesTosca’sjealousybyshowingher theMarchesa’sfan,foundinthechurch.He setshisagentsonTosca’strail,hopingshe willleadthemtoAngelotti’shidingplace, andhewillgainwhathewantsfromTosca.

The TeDeum isheardagainstthe backgroundofachurchprocessionand thesingingofaTeDeumchantto celebratethereportofNapoleon’sdefeat atMarengo–falselyreported,itlaterturns out.Scarpiadominatesthescene,letting theaudienceinonhissinisterplansand desires.

MadamaButterfly

Fascinationwithorientallifeinspiredthe storybyAmericanJohnLutherLongthat heandDavidBelascoadaptedastheplay MadameButterfly.Pucciniandhis librettists,makinganoperafromtheplayin 1904,broughttolifeinmusicatouching femalecharacter–avictimofcultural misunderstandingandofaman’s

irresponsibility.Thetragedyendsin Butterfly’sritualsuicide,desertedbyher husband-of-convenienceandrejectedby herfamily.

InJapan,nearNagasaki,aJapanesegirl, Cio-Cio-San,knownasButterfly,forsakes herreligionandmarriesaUSNavalOfficer, Pinkerton.Heabandonshershortlyafter theirmarriage,promisingtoreturn‘when therobinsbuildtheirnests’.

ActIIissetthreeyearslater;Cio-Cio-San, nowmotherofhischild,isstillconvinced Pinkertonwillreturntoher.The Humming Chorus formsaninterludebetweenthe twopartsofthesecondact.Atlast Pinkerton’sship,the AbrahamLincoln,has beenseenintheharbour.AsButterfly preparesforPinkertontovisither,she singsthe FlowerDuet withhermaid Suzuki,thenanunseenchorusisheard, singing‘withclosedmouths’–humming.

ManonLescaut

Puccini’sfirstmajorsuccess,in1893,was hisopera ManonLescaut,basedonthe AbbéPrevost’snovel,setin18th-century FranceandLouisiana.Ittellsofthe obsessionoftheChevalierdesGrieuxfor thenaïvebutfetchingManon,withwhom heelopes.InParis,sheleavesheryoung loverforaricholdman,butissentenced forthefttopenalservitude.

The Intermezzo betweenActsIIandIII coversthejourneytoLeHavre.Des Grieux,stillenthralled,followsManon,who willembarkthere,withother‘fallen’ women,forNorthAmerica.

VerymuchawareofMassenet’s1874 opera Manon,Pucciniwasdeterminedto

GIACOMOPUCCINI (1858–1924)madehis careeralmostexclusivelyasacomposerfor thestage–theundisputedsuccessorof Verdi–andhisoperasarethefoundation ofhislegacy,withworkssuchas La bohème, Tosca, MadamaButterfly and Turandot standingasmainstaysofthe repertoire.Exemplarsoftheverismostyle, Puccini’soperasarelovedfortherelatable andheartfeltromanticismoftheirscenarios aswellasthepoignantlyricismofhis melodicstyleandcolourfulorchestral writing.

Thesheerpopularityofhisoperashas overshadowedtheconcertandsacred musicthatPucciniwrotebeforecompleting hisfirstoperaattheageof26,anditwould benaturaltoassumethataMassfromhis penwouldbe‘operatic’incharacter.But theyoungPucciniwasnotyetanopera composer.Hewasoriginallytrained,very soundly,towritemusicforthechurch.Four generationsofhisancestorshadbeen churchorganistsandcomposersattached totheCathedralofSanMartinointhe TuscancityofLucca.Itwasexpectedthat Giacomowouldfollowintheirfootsteps, buthedidnotreturntoLuccaafterhis studiesinMilan.Thiswaspartlybecause he’delopedwithamarriedwomanfromhis nativecity,butmainlyitwasbecausehe alreadyknewthathewasmadeforopera.

bedifferent.Insteadof‘powderand minuets’,hisoperawouldhaveanItalian’s ‘desperatepassion’.Thiscanbeheardin theIntermezzo’sbigcentraltune,oneof Puccini’smostmemorable,andinthefateladenmotifthatfollowsit.

Turandot

Puccini’sfinalopera, Turandot,basedonan 18th-centuryplaybyGozzi,issetina fantasticalancientChina.Suitorswishing wedthebeautifulbuticyprincessTurandot mustanswerthreeriddles;thepriceof failureisdeath.

PrinceCalaf,undeterredbythe beheadingofthelatestsuitor,takesthe challenge–incognito.Turandot,horrified whenCalafanswerstheriddlescorrectly, begstobereleasedfromheroath,soCalaf offersheracounter-challenge:ifshecan discoverhisnamebydawn,hewilldie.

Alltheactiontakesplacebetween moonriseandthefollowingdawn,andas theActIexcerptsbegin,thecrowdis impatientlywaitingforthemoontorise (‘Perchetardalaluna’ –Whydoesthe moondelay?)sothatthegrimtestofthe riddlesandexecutionscanbegin.

Liùisaslave,travellingascompanionto thedeposedTartarKing,Timur.The ‘UnknownPrince’(Calaf,whowillbe revealedasTimur’sson)oncesmiledon herandshewassmittenwithlove.Calafis obsessivelydeterminedtoanswer Turandot’schallengeandwinherhand.

CalaftriestoreassureLiù,whohas imploredhimnottoleavehisfatherand heraloneintheworld: ‘Nonpiangere,Liù!’ (Donotweep,Liù!).

Turandot’srecitalofthehistoryofher ancestry,andherrejectionofmen(‘In questareggia’ –Inthispalace)issungasa warningtotheUnknownPrince.Climaxing inTurandot’scertaintythattheriddlespoint todeath,andCalaf’sresponse:life,not

death,thisariahasbeencalledthe dramaticsoprano’sMountEverest.

Turandot’smeltingtransformationis causednotbyLiù’sentreaty,norby witnessingtheslavegirl’sdeathforlove, butbyCalaf’sdetermination,strong enoughtoovercomeeventheicy princess’sresistance.Calaf’s aria ‘Nessun dorma’ (Noneshallsleep)–easilythebestknownpartoftheopera–proclaimshis confidencethathewillbevictoriousinthe challenge.He beginsbeechoingthe wordsofthe heralds,proclaiming Turandot’scommandthatnoneshallsleep and,ifthePrince’snameisn’tdiscovered bymorning,allshallbeputtodeath.

Liù’ssufferinganddeathisthemost touchingthinginthisopera,anditis wonderfullyrealisedinPuccini’smusic, mostofallinLiù’sfinalaria ‘Tuchedigel seicinta’ (You,whoareenclosedinice). PuccinimayhaveidentifiedLiùwiththe unfortunateservantgirlDoriaManfredi, whowasdriventosuicidebythejealous andbaselessaccusationsofPuccini’swife.

ThemusicforthedeathofLiùwasthe lastPuccinicomposed–hediedleaving onlybriefsketchesforthefinalduet betweenCalafandTurandot.Theopera wascompletedbyFrancoAlfano,butthe chorusconcludingtheoperaandthis concert,celebratingTurandot’snamingof theUnknownPrinceas‘Love’,isofcourse arepriseofmuscbyPuccini,fromCalaf’s memorablearia.
