REQUIEM FOR A LOST GIRL

A CHAMBER MUSICAL ABOUT HOMELESSNESS MAY 4 AT 7:30 | MAY 6 AT 2 PM FEI AND MILTON WONG EXPERIMENTAL THEATRE

COMPOSER AND CONDUCTOR MARCEL BERGMANN WRITER AND DIRECTOR ONALEA GILBERTSON WITH WRITING AND ADDITIONAL MUSIC BY THE KETTLE CHOIR AND WRITERS GUILD

PRESENTED WITH

WORDS FROM GEOF MILSON |

I have been involved with the Kettle choir right from the very beginning, that has been just a little bit over two years now. It’s been an exciting time for me. I decided to join the program because I was a singer and songwriter before and I needed a new avenue to help present some of my music. When I discovered what the program was about it seemed to be right up my alley. The choir is an opportunity for all of us with lower incomes to get involved in a very special program that otherwise we'd be denied. The themes of the opera are very meaningful to me. I was homeless for seven years and struggled with addiction. It took a lot of effort to get back into the “mill” and integrate back into society as a functioning adult. Participating in the project has changed my outlook, connected me to a group and improved my health. It's been a 100% better for myself and for everyone else who is involved. I can see the change in everybody. At first, they were a little scared to sing, their voices would squeak out. Now they demand to be heard and even bellow! It's really exciting to watch because we have some really talented people here.

REQUIEM FOR A LOST GIRL

are real issues that need to be corrected and if everybody does a little bit to help, its a starting point for change. Music can help change the world. Everyone has a vision of morality that they want to try and achieve or at least meet for their own selves. The opera allows audiences to see something that is morally wrong. Hopefully, they will want to make an effort to try and change that but it the music has to be heard. I like that we have all been given the chance to put our ourselves into the opera. One of my songs, “Footprints In The Hail”, is going to be a part of Requiem For A Lost Girl. I was inspired to write the song by the opera and my knowledge of being on the street. It's a kind of a sombre song. It's not one that is going to attract everybody because the story doesn’t end well. I hope that the audience hears that life goes on and if we make changes, then it doesn't have to end with life being cut short. Geof Milson is a singer and song writer from the Kettle Choir and Writers Guild.

I believe that if Requiem For A Lost Girl is seen by enough people, it will help them to see that there

Exploring themes of homelessness, poverty, mental illness, addiction and the plight of missing and murdered women —this strikingly original chamber work unfolds as a memorial service for a young woman lost to the street. The performances on May 4th and 6th feature members of Vancouver Opera’s Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program, members of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and Chorus, and the Kettle Choir and Writers Guild.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: BLAKE, CASSELS & GRAYDON LLP

LARA CIEKIEWICZ AS TATIANA, VALERIAN RUMINSKI AS PRINCE GREMIN, AND PHILLIP ADDIS AS ONEGIN IN EUGENE ONEGIN (2018). PHOTO BY TRUDIE LEE.

Entering the world of Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP is like stepping into the future and the past all at once. The ultramodern space belies the grassroots ideology that drives their business and mission. Blakes is a leader in social responsibility, diversity and inclusion, and they understand that fostering positive change within their organization creates ripples in the broader community. If you visit their website, you will find multiple pages that outline their various education, artistic, athletic and community initiatives—work that is both inspiring and impressive. Blakes makes contributions to many charitable organizations each year, but simply writing cheques doesn’t fulfill their mandate. Locally, they contribute time and funding to causes such as BC Children’s Hospital, CIBC Run for the Cure, United Way and Arts Umbrella. Partner Carrie Fleming, Chair of their Charity Committee says “Supporting organizations that help develop thriving and caring communities is important to Blakes. We are proud to partner with so many deserving organizations in B.C. and throughout Canada”. Partners, associates and staff at every level help shape the vision by bringing their personal philanthropic interests to the table. The team is personally engaged in the community through volunteerism and engagement on many boards and panels. Their associates' work commitment to delivering pro bono services is officially recognized, rewarded and encouraged by the firm. Work ranges from helping established organizations on charitable and other matters, helping new organizations get off the ground and assisting individuals that cannot otherwise afford legal advice. Blakes’ partners also provide many hours of pro bono services and volunteer work.

Blakes’ relationship with Vancouver Opera began in 2010, and since then they have sponsored several productions and special events, including this season’s Eugene Onegin. The firm became involved through Bill Sirett who was a big fan of Vancouver Opera and VO Board member. When Mr. Sirett left the VO Board, he asked his colleague Bill Maclagan, Office Managing Partner to step in. Mr. Maclagan serves as Vice Chair of Vancouver Opera’s Board of Directors. Vancouver Opera is truly grateful for the support of Blakes and is thrilled to be able to recognize them for their incredible commitment to the arts community. They are a testament that the giving of time, money and energy builds stronger organizations and strengthens communities.

The organizations and causes that we support are very diverse. We really like to focus on the things that our people and clients are involved in. We have great people and great clients who make admirable contributions to our community. —Bill Maclagan, Office Managing Partner, Blakes

TAKING THE NEXT STEP… Since 2004, the David Spencer Endowment Encouragement Fund has been investing in emerging artists at Vancouver Opera. This assistance has permitted many artists a boost as they become professional performers and complements our other young artist development programming. In our production of Eugene Onegin, we recognize Leah Giselle Field, Peter Monaghan and Martin Renner Wallace as the David Spencer Artists. All were members of the Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program in 2016/17.

Spencer Fund In The Overcoat David - a musical tailoring,Memorial we recognize Caitlin Wood and Aaron Durand as the David Spencer Artists. Both these artists were members of the Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program in 2015/16 and are building successful international careers.

WE THANK THE DAVID SPENCER ENDOWMENT ENCOURAGEMENT FUND TRUSTEES AND EXPRESS OUR SINCERE GRATITUDE FOR THEIR ROLE IN HELPING VO BECOME A FOCAL POINT FOR YOUNG ARTIST TRAINING IN CANADA.

"The Fazioli is a very creative piano, it really lets you do all that your imagination wants to do. It has a huge range of colour, from the most powerful sounds to the most delicate sounds – which are all produced with great ease. It is my most precious possession!"
