Wonderful changes ahead for St. Augustine By Yvette Walker Father Joe Alsay has a wonderful new vision for St. Augustine, and in the coming months we’ll see a new church service, new music and even some changes in the physical church. One of the most noticeable changes is the cross at the front of the church. The statue of the open‐armed, welcoming Jesus was moved from the chapel to the cross. It fits like a glove, and, in fact, was made for this kind of presentation. Father Joe referenced the more welcoming cross in a recent church service.
Speaking of the chapel, Have you noticed lately? It is used for Wednesday noon services, and may be used for other things soon. A small but important change was made. The altar was moved to face the beautiful stained glass windows, and the chairs split to face the altar. This small change centers the place of holiness in between the people, instead of at the front. On Sept. 12, we’re adding a new service at 8:30, and moving the 10 a.m. services to 10:30. This allows for growth in the church. The two services will be quite
different. The 8:30 will be Rite I, and will be, as Father Joe calls it, a “contemplative service.” There will be organ and service music only. Depending on the size, the congregation may worship closer to the altar. The 10:30 will be Rite II and a “celebration service.” There will be choir and instruments and more music. Father Joe called it a “moving service,” and is considering involving more lay people in the service, as well as encouraging people to come up to the front of the church at different times during the service.

SHINING KNIGHTS DINNER CLUB Shining Knights, the dinner/social group that meets at parishioners’ homes and/or restaurants, will be starting up again in the fall. Shining Knights is a fun opportunity to share a meal and fellowship with other St. Augustine parishioners. Yvette Walker will be heading up Shining Knights this season, and the official sign‐up will be at the Sept. 12 Ministry Fair. FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE ALTAR Did you notice the gorgeous flowers on the altar Sunday? The Altar Guild needs donations to the flower fund year‐ round. Please consider making a memorial or thanksgiving donation for a special remembrance. The Flower Dedication Book is located on the table in the Narthex. Make donation checks payable to “St. Augustine Episcopal Church” and write “Altar Guild‐Flowers” in the memo to assure that the funds will be directed to the appropriate account. Thank you.

Now, Forward Movement, its publisher, is looking for new ways to continue living out its mission in the life of the Episcopal Church and the world. "We're looking at how we can make full use of social networking and digital communications to reinvigorate the life of the church," the Rev. Richard Schmidt, Forward Movement's editor and director, said. "I know that the future will not consist entirely of print resources … I have no expectation that that market is going to disappear in the foreseeable future, but it needs to be supplemented with other things." "I don't see it as a question of either print or digital," he said. "I see it as a both/and."
