AN CUAN Ire A Mission

Youth With A Mission, also known as YWAM (“why-wam”) is an international movement of Christians from many different denominations, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Our motivation and purpose is to know God and make Him known. YWAM Ireland is a community of people from many nations committed to representing and worshipping Jesus in a tangible and authentic way— to “be Jesus with skin on” in a world that needs hope. Whether we’re in Rostrevor, the heart of East Africa, slums in India or villages in the Middle East, we try to live out lives of indiscriminate acts of kindness and service to Christ. We were given the Christian Renewal Centre in Rostrevor, Co. Down in January 2010, and took up residence 6 months later. What a journey it has been already! Over one thousand people slept in the building during our first 15 months alone, with many more coming through the doors for concerts, prayer events, craft fayres and our Monday night gathering, Harbour. Our centre in Rostrevor is just one of the many branches of our broader community. An Cuan is the Irish word for “Harbour” and we aim to fulfill our vision and namesake by being a place of renewal for mind, body and spirit, partnering with and serving other churches and organisations, locally and internationally, building bridges across divided communities, and by training and sending out people with a heart for missions.

“We are facing in Ireland today the greatest spiritual crisis this country has known in its long history…if we are willing to allow Him, God will lead us out of the dark to a new day of opportunity.”

-- Cecil Kerr from his book, The Way of Peace

Shortly after we took up residence at An Cuan the founder of the Christian Renewal Centre (CRC), Cecil Kerr, passed into the arms of Jesus. Cecil had been a giant of the spiritual landscape in Ireland for the previous 4 decades. It is an immense privilege to be walking in his steps and to have the friendship and support of his wife, Myrtle, and many other Christian Renewal Centre community members who still live locally. We have always believed that we are carrying the baton a bit further, rather than starting a totally new enterprise. The vision for reconciliation and for the life of Jesus to be manifested on the streets of Ireland is still central to our calling.

An Cuan is YWAM Ireland’s central hub for training and sending out Christian workers and teams around the world. Our goal is to create long-term teams all over N.Ireland and the Republic who continue to reach out and bring lasting impact. Through our programmes we aim to obey Jesus’ Great Commission to make disciples in all nations and serve among some of the most needy and neglected peoples of the world. We host Discipleship Training Schools multiple times a year in Rostrevor. A DTS is for 18 yrs+ individuals with a desire to deepen their relationship with God & share His love with others. The programme consists of a 12 week lecture phase exploring the foundations of what it means to be a disciple in this day and age and an 8-10 week overseas outreach to one of our focus nations. Our newest training location in Sligo hosts a School of Strategic Missions as well as a Discipleship Training Schools. Patrick Eric Bongani Mcobothi

Sponsored Trainee, fall 2012 from Durban, South Africa

I came from township were most young people do not have vision and most importantly do not know Jesus Christ. The community is full of chaos and destruction, I was one of those who had no hope and a blank future without purpose. As an African, coming to live in Northern Ireland was a blessing on its own. I met new friends and new families, God has been faithful. Being a sponsored Trainee was a blessing because I received everything, and my focus was Jesus Christ and His presence was evident everyday. YWAM Ireland is like a family to me. Lectures and ministry night were amazing. I struggled in my first month as the culture and lifestyle was different, but because of the love and passion from YWAM Ireland staff I settled in quickly. Thanks to YWAM Ireland I have developed love for Missions now. Spiritually I have grown and I consider myself a Leader. My passion for justice and reconciliation has increased -- thanks to awesome outreaches from Ireland and India and thanks to good leaders and all of YWAM Ireland.

Our vision at YWAM Ireland involves being bridge builders and peace makers in some of the most troubled places on earth. For the past 11 years we have sponsored young individuals from Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and South Africa to complete our Discipleship Training programme. We do this as an effort to integrate faith with a vision for reconciliation -- to make a deep and authentic impact in places of conflict. The sponsored trainees are recommended by partner organisations where we send outreach teams. After receiving YWAM training they then return to their homes more rooted in their faith and with the momentum to build bridges and “be Jesus with skin onâ€? in their communities. In order to bring them from areas of conflict and the developing world we need to raise thousands in ÂŁGBP to cover their training and living expenses as well as airfare and visa costs. We invite you to partner with us by sharing this with your friends and contributing financially. No amount is too small! Please see our staff if you would like more information or to give a donation.

I’m from the little town of Bethlehem in the Palestinian Territories. Northern Ireland was truly one of the most memorable, real and life changing times of my life. My experience living in the Palestinian Territories is similar to the people of Northern Ireland, and I am blessed I had the opportunity to share my stories with students and people who were dealing with the same struggles. My time with YWAM gave me a greater heart for mission and making a difference in my community. The Lord renewed my desire to help others on the journey of reconciliation and called me to start the Mephibosheth Holy Land Ministries. I have great respect for Jonny Clark and the staff in YWAM Ireland. They have a deep love for the forgotten Palestinian Christians; not many know that we exist. I encourage you to partner with YWAM Rostrevor, because investing in people is investing in the eternal Kingdom. Training up leaders, influencing people and nations, and being a light in the darkness makes a huge difference in a place that has been through so much. God bless!!

In order to continue developing our vision and to keep up with the repairs and improvements at An Cuan, we need several new partners who will contribute financially on a monthly basis. We are a non-profit charity and every YWAM Staff member works on a voluntary basis. We ask you to sincerely consider supporting us regularly. If you would like to set up a standing order or for more information on how you can give, please contact info@ywamrostrevor.com We have already accomplished a great deal at An Cuan! Projects involving building, renovation and makeovers to bedrooms, showers, flats, main gathering rooms and kitchens have been completed or are in process. We have increased our capacity to serve and house our training schools and other groups and host concerts and other larger events.

PENDING PROJECTS • We are in the process of planning, designing, and building a café that will be part of the centre here and open to the general public. It will be a place of belonging, friendship, and community. • We need a new roof, as the current one has truly passed its “best before” date! • We also hope to upgrade our heating system to make the building warmer and more environmentally sustainable.

The value of hospitality is at the core of

who we are & what we do. AN CUAN regularly hosts YWAM teams, church groups, youth groups, individuals and families for weekend residentials or shortterm volunteer service. We are also a great venue for guest speakers, seminars, music events, and more!
