RONALD REAGAN

When Dutch was fifteen years old, several drownings occurred on the Rock River. Something had to be done to make it safe for swimmers. Dutch came up with an idea, and was hired as a lifeguard. He never forgot that the lives of people depended upon him, and no one drowned that summer.

See right panel on this page.

From his early days living in small-town poverty, young Dutch Reagan’s (1911–2004) thoughts were always on the future. Whether helping his family through financial hard times or doggedly pursuing opportunities reserved for the few, Dutch knew that all the knowledge that he had absorbed over the years was waiting inside of him for a chance to come out. Achieving success as an athlete, sports announcer, and actor, Ronald Reagan discovered his greatest role late in life—as the fortieth president of the United States and “The Great Communicator,” a man with the ability to reach out to the American people and leave a lasting legacy. Born into a loving family, Dietrich Bonhoeffer pursued a life as a pastor, teacher, theologian—and spy. He spoke out about the trouble in Germany when Adolph Hitler came to power, urging the Christian church to rescue disparaged peoples and resist Hitler’s evil empire. Accused of being a troublemaker, Dietrich persevered fearlessly in the midst of wickedness. His work as a spy in the German resistance and participation in a plot to assassinate Hitler led to imprisonment and eventual execution. But the lesson of his life story remains: “Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

See right panel on this page.

Africa’s Trailblazer

As Dietrich sang the German national anthem, he contemplated the devastation Hitler and the Nazis were perpetrating on Europe. Dietrich would do whatever he could to stop them, even if it meant pulling the trigger on the führer himself. He had thought about it from every angle, and his conscience was clear.

Three thousand feet above China, it was Jake’s turn to jump. He slid his pistol, knife, and ration packets into the pockets of his leather jacket and edged toward the open hatch of the B-25 bomber. He checked the tension on the harness of his parachute, made sure the handle of the ripcord was free, and then began lowering himself out of the hatch and into the darkness. One of the famous Doolittle Raiders who first attacked Japan after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Jacob DeShazer (1912–2008) knew his one-way mission was dangerous. Indeed, it led to his capture as a prisoner of war. Beaten, malnourished, and alone in his cell, Jacob was given a Bible—and far away from home, this American soldier became a Christian. After the war, Jacob returned to Japan and served his former enemy for thirty years as a missionary. His testimony of forgiveness and reconciliation—of love over hate—inspires a powerful gospel message for our lives today. 224 pages, 978-1-57658-475-0, $9.99 Unit Study Curriculum Guide CD available

Watching his father perform medical procedures back in India had convinced Paul that medicine was about blood and guts and ulcers. To his amazement, he found that it was really about causes and cures, alleviating pain, and treating ill people with dignity. The son of missionary parents, Paul Brand (1914–2003), did not plan on becoming a doctor: After training as a builder, he was called by God into medicine and spent a lifetime treating leprosy and restoring hope to thousands of sufferers. Dr. Paul Brand became the first surgeon in the world to use reconstructive surgery to correct the deformities of leprosy in the hands and feet. He strove to eliminate the stigma of the disease and rebuild the lives of those destroyed by it. A humble, brilliant servant, he influenced faith and medical communities around the world, reminding us that all people are created in the image of God. 208 pages, 978-1-57658-536-8, $9.99

“We’ve done more than our share to see you right, but you’re a Hershey, a true son of a dreamer,” Milton’s Uncle Abraham said. “You’ll never stick with anything long enough to make it work for you.” Milton gulped. He’d already suspected that his relatives had given up on him succeeding as a candy maker, but the words still stung. When Milton Hershey’s (1857–1945) famous Hershey Bars debuted in 1905, few people knew of the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice preceding the triumph. Debt, lack of support, and fatigue had been constant companions for the famous chocolatier and philanthropist—a man with a fourth-grade education. Despite comparisons to his wandering father, Milton never gave up. Learning from his mistakes, he spent a lifetime creating sweet things to eat—first caramel, then chocolate. As his company soared, Milton used his wealth to care for others, founding a town for Hershey workers, a school for children in need, and a foundation dedicated to education, culture, and health care. 208 pages, 978-1-932096-82-8, $9.99 Unit Study Curriculum Guide CD available

From the flag-draped presidential box, Abraham Lincon watched the popular comedy on stage at the Ford Theater. As he laughed at a funny line—Bang! A single shot rang out from a small derringer, the sound barely audible over the laughter of the crowd. Abe slumped forward, blood running from behind his left ear.

When President Lincoln died the next morning, the United States mourned as it had never mourned before. An assassin had killed the man who had led Americans through the bloody turmoil of the Civil War with an unswerving commitment to rebuilding a strong and united country. Abe Lincoln had never set his sights on becoming president; after all, he’d grown up in a log cabin on the frontier and had hardly any formal schooling. But as the question of slavery threatened to destroy the United States, this selftaught lawyer with a sharp mind and passion for justice found himself at the center of the greatest debate the nation had ever faced. 224 pages, 978-1-883002-79-4, $9.99 Unit Study Curriculum Guide available

eveloped from years of student ministry experience, the Intensive Discipleship Course is designed specifically for high school and college students who are hungry to know God more, dive deep into His Word, and discover His plan for their lives. Each vol-

INTENSIVE DISCIPLESHIP

COURSE Vinnie Carafano

REACHING A LOST WORLD Cults and World Religions • Vinnie Carafano with Kimberly Arnold In twelve weeks you’ll be equipped as a more effective witness for the Lord. You’ll feel more confident to talk to members of cults and world religions about your faith and be ready to stand up for the truth. Why should you study cults and world religions? Because our world is no longer divided into isolated parts. A century ago most Westerners would not have known a Hindu, Buddhist, or Muslim. Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witness were small fringe groups, and the New Age movement had not officially begun. Today people of every major cult and world religion are nearby, living in our neighborhoods, sitting next to us in class, and working with us at our jobs. We can bring the light of the gospel to people from every belief system, and we need to prepare ourselves through study and prayer. INTENSIVE DISCIPLESHIP COURSE BEING USEFUL TO GOD NOW Vinnie Carafano In Being Useful to God Now, students will learn to be active, effective disciples of Christ—wherever they’re at in life—by modeling God’s love and compassion, studying evangelism techniques, preparing Bible studies, counseling peers through life-controlling problems, and hearing God’s call on their lives.
