ADAPTING 50/50 COOP

Individual Thesis Instructor: Sascha Delz

In response to the escalating housing prices and the evolving demands for living arrangements, 50/50 COOP presents an innovative housing model that facilitates adaptable interior spaces. The limitations imposed by conventional houses on people's space requirements are now a thing of the past. In here, SPACE breaks into SPACE ELEMENT. Each element represent a essential living experience of housing.

By offering a dynamic marketplace, 50/50 COOP simplifies the process of acquiring these space elements, likening it to purchasing a pre-owned car. This unique marketplace for space elements not only enables individuals to reduce their cost of living but also grants them unparalleled flexibility in choosing their desired living arrangements.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE SPACE ORGANIZE

The 50/50 Cooperative will gradually grow from VENICE in Los Angeles to a project that spans the United States. It has four main stakeholder entities, community land trust, 50/50 coop, members and space elements market, and the coop keeps the organization running by taking in government funds, community donations, dues and rental stores.

50/50 COOP facilities revolve around a shared core space comprising common areas, vertical transportation, scalable plumbing, and a mobile platform. The housing units within the facility are strategically organized around this central core, ensuring convenient access to essential amenities for all residents.

The ground floor, designed with a focus on open public spaces, offers a welcoming and inclusive environment. Along the street, the housing modules serve a dual purpose, functioning as both residential units and commercial spaces open to the public.

RELOCATING SPACE ELEMENT

All 50/50 COOP facilities adhere to a unified standard that facilitates the seamless movement of space elements within the organization. This design philosophy aims to liberate individuals from being bound to a specific house. With the support of 50/50 COOP's widespread facilities across the country, people can effortlessly relocate their living spaces. This mobility empowers individuals to embrace a more flexible lifestyle, where they are not confined to a fixed location but can freely and easily move their homes within the network of 50/50 COOP facilities.

The different space elements can be arranged in various combinations to form different housing units, providing residents with more options to meet their needs. Each household only needs to pay for the indoor space they occupy, while the outdoor space will be shared among all residents as public space. This approach promotes community interaction by creating more public space for neighbors to interact with each other.

FOLDING PLATE TECTONIC

Individual Studio 705 Instructor: Wesley Jones

Plate tectonic is a combination of engineering purposes and architectural purposes. It functions as a component of the framework, simultaneously creating and enclosing new spaces. The Foldaptive chair is crafted from sheet steel plates that are folded to give the chair its unique strength and aesthetic. The unique identity of the chair is created by the way the steel is folded at varying angles and lengths.

FOLDAPTIVE CHAIR

ADAPTIVE

The Foldaptive Chair boasts a unique design, crafted from three Folded steel plates. Its versatility lies in its ability to alter the angle of the backrest to cater to the user's comfort. The seat is plush, filled with a soft sponge and covered in luxurious leather for a cozy seating experience.

The design of the folding plate tectonic was influenced by the creation of the Foldaptive chair. The folding process transforms a flat steel plate into a Basic Module, making it suitable for mass production through casting, pressing, or other methods at a manufacturing facility. Folding increases the cross-sectional area of the connection, enhancing the system's load-bearing capacity.

The facade panels are composed of two distinct materials, steel and acrylic. Each panel is uniform in design and can be easily assembled using tab joints and bolts. With a height of 3 feet, the interior space can be altered by adjusting the number of panels used.

The building's façade uses a biology louver system, which echoes the privacy of the interior spaces by varying sparsity. The greenery between the glass and the louver allows the wind to blow more gently into the interior, and the growing vines provide a good shade for the interior space. Moreover, the foliage on the exterior serves as a means of collecting rainwater for water recycling, thus enhancing the energy efficiency of the building and promoting sustainability.

ENGAGING

USC EXTENSION SCHOOL OF VERTIBI

Individual Studio 605A Instructor: Wesley Jones

This project is an attachment school to Viterbi. The building maintains a simple and straightforward architectural layout reflecting the character of an engineering college. A slightly larger lobby runs through the center of the building providing a social gathering space while maintaining the passability of the original site.

The completion of this school will serve as an interface between USC and the community in which it is located. This school will spread its learning to its community and promote the development of the community.

ORDERING

As an engineering school, the building houses various essential components including laboratories, classrooms, offices, and a multipurpose room. The multipurpose room serves as a demonstration of engineering excellence, showcasing the integration of steel truss, brick walls, and glass. Facing the neighboring buildings, it serves as a hub for knowledge dissemination.

BRICKS

The arrangement of bricks in the multipurpose room creates varied sized gaps, allowing for a range of light penetration through the walls. This design choice enables different levels of illumination, providing a dynamic and visually appealing environment.

A light-transmissive louver made of polymer is installed above the corridor, effectively reducing direct sunlight from California and ensuring ample natural light enters the building. Additionally, the presence of operable windows behind the lighttransmissive brick walls allows for passive cooling, adding to the energy efficiency of the building.

The utilization of brick walls also makes the building blend seamlessly into the USC village. The varied arrangement of bricks adds visual interest to the east side of the building, preventing it from appearing monotonous.

RURAL CITY THE HOME COMPETITION

DIRECTOR'S CHOICE

City has become a predominant context in building projects for a long time, while the potential of countryside has always been overlooked. Rural City is a paradigm for future living condition. Abundant rural land makes it possible to overturn high-rise apartments to single-story row houses, where resources are equally possessed, and personality is dissimilarly developed. The optimized circular form creates two different environments and experiences on both sides of the community: an idyllic rural landscape with open, endless fields, and a more familiar city park surrounded by the transparent façade and distinct skyline.

This atypical deurbanization process is not just a reflective response to the increasingly congested urban built environment and high-pressure lifestyle of citizens. Social attributes and effective agglomeration of cities are reserved in form of row houses, assembly workspace and various communal spaces. The definitions of citizens and villagers are vague here. By approaching the two different contexts within a single home unit, a binary space of urban and rural, and a better balance between ease and efficiency are able to be realized.
