COURAGE TO CHANGE
TAIRA “I did it for myself because I just want to better myself … ”
MELISSA “It’s all about empowerment … ”
TANDRA “I knew that I wasn’t alone … It gave me so much inspiration to get out of this relationship … ”
ON A MISSION WITH COURAGE The history of the YWCA is filled with inspirational acts of bravery, audacity and progressive insight. Our legacy is one of risk-taking and bold action. Our legacy is also one of organizational change and transformation. We are reclaiming our full story. Our recommitment to the elimination of racism is an institutional legacy of the many women of color, young women and their allies who labored within this movement. We are clear that despite any “racial progress” in the United States, our mission to eliminate racism remains as necessary today as it ever has.
ANTWONETTE “There’s a great deal of relief coming from somewhere where you don’t feel safe … ”
CHELSEA “They help me feel like there is hope and there will be change … ”
Given that women of color will constitute 53% of U.S. women by 2050, yet continue to be marginalized economically, politically and socially, it is clear that our mission can be fulfilled only by working strategically and vigorously — and with courage — to eliminate racism and empower women. The YWCA is a multi-issue, multi-racial, social change organization that intentionally seeks to improve the lives of women and girls by working at the intersection of race, class and gender. By declaring social justice as our core identity, we provide a standard to measure our practices, policies, programs and services, adding to our ability to increase our collective mission impact. BARBARA C. PEREZ President / CEO
