PURSUIT Lupu Bridge, Shanghai 10.7 x 15.4 White pen, color pencil and watercolor on paperboard 2013 | Self-directed

The construction of buildings and infrustactures has moved far beyond its initial goal of satiating resiential needs, and moving instead toward the realization of human ambitions. Modern skyscrapers and huge bridges embody our prolonged pursuit of higher and stronger, and incessently extend the boundary of human imagination. PAINTINGS AND SKETCHES | 2

ORGANISM A Living City 10.7’’ x 15.4” Acrylic paint, pencil, marker pen, pencil on paper 2013 | Self-directed

This painting, inspired by a view of urban Nanjing from a temple in the suburbs, presents the city as a living organism. The black and red patterns below the skyline symbolize both roots of plants and vessels of a human, conveying the deep connection between the inner activities in the organism and its connection with the ground, or nature. Thus, I suggest that the city starts acquiring its own meaning of excitence when it reaches a nontrivial scale. PAINTINGS AND SKETCHES | 4

ZEITGEIST The North Side of the Bund 9.8 x 15.4 Watercolor, color pencil and pen on paper 2013 | Self-directed

Zeitgeist, or spirit of an era, is represented by architecture. The accumulation of historical architecture then forms the spirit of a city. In this way, zeigeist obtains immortality. In this scene, the steel bridge, first of its kind in China, and the colonial architecture together represents the eclectic style of Shanghai. PAINTINGS AND SKETCHES | 6

FLOWING SPACE Pass by 55.9 x 9.8 Gloss poster paper, acrylic paint, photocopy paper 2013 | Self-directed

This painting presents a panoramic scene of people walking through corridors. The indoor space, sober with its clear balck and white bars, is much softened by the ink texture, creating a flowing emotion. The diverse human figures further disrupt the spatial rigor, while also indicating a paradox: all figures shown are walking in the same site, while each of them is heading his own way, not having the least connection with people nearby. ELEVATION A Courtyard in Urban Shanghai 11.4 x 8.9 Pencil and charcoal on paperboard 2013 | Self-directed

In the urban crowded setting. people are likely to feel helpless or despaired or depressed. In this small-scale building, the architect cleverly uses window and column of clasical style. Looking upward, people can feel the elevation of space and even of spirits. Spiritual anxiety is thus comforted. PAINTINGS AND SKETCHES | 10

MINIMALISM A Room Downstairs

10.4 x 17 Pencil and charcoal on paperboard 2013 | Self-directed

The spatial arragement follows an additive rule: the stairway adds an elevating orientation, the table fortifies the sense of perspective and defines a volume, while the delicately depicted lamp occupies an eye-catching postion and implies human acitivity in this space. SYMBOLS The Stone Lion 10.7 x 15.4 Pencil, color pencil and marker pen on paperboard 2013 | Self-directed

Stone lines, traditionally placed before Chinese imperial palaces, are symbols of dignity and ascendency. Chinese palaces acquire humans' reverence not only by using grand scales, but also by massive usage of symbols. Traditional architecture is a collection of totems, an epitome of a nation's prehistoric culture. PAINTINGS AND SKETCHES | 14

INTUITION An Angel 10.7 x 15.4 Pencil, color pencil and marker pen on paperboard 2013 | Self-directed

Modern designs are direct stumuli. They are pictures without connotations. In this drawing, the clear lines of the angel figure and the color blocks creat dramatic contrast, but the layout is deliberately balanced. Therefore, intuitively, the viewer sees the whole painting as a harmonious image, oblivious of the deliberations of the artist. PAINTINGS AND SKETCHES | 16

MEMORY No. 17, Donghu Road 7.7 x 10.6 Pen drawing 2011 | Self-directed

This is a 20-minute outdoor sketch. I drew this when I was walking around in the previous French colony part of Shanghai. This house is one of many buildings that were designed by western architects in Shnaghai's colony era. Originally the Belgium consulate since 1921, it was later used as a college dormitory, a newspaper office. Now, it is the headquarter of the Chinese Communist Youth League Shanghai Committee. Its symbol, the golden star, is within the door and columns. PAINTINGS AND SKETCHES | 18

EMOTION Smile

11.4’’ x 9.5” Acrylic paint on paper 2013 | Self-directed

This painting is a study of color and emotion. While the emotion of the boy in the painting is convivial, the vibrant color also has a contagiously cheerful effect. Thus, color affect people’s emotions in a subconcious way..

EXPANSION A Streetside Restaurant in urban Shanghai I took this photo on Xiqin Road in my neighborhood. The buildings along this road used to be used only for dwelling, but gradually, more and more streetside restaurants occupy the first floor. This change of function is very conspicuous in this picture: with the inornate initial facade of the apartment building on the left side, and the bright-colored facade of the restaurant on the right side. Apparently, the limited space can no longer satisfy the inhabitors’ needs. On one hand, they expand their business outdoors, taking out tables, chiars and even cookers. On the other hand, lacking a capaShanghai, China cious balcony, they hang their laundries right out along the road. Digital Photography Thus, in a fast developing city like Shanghai, where buildings can no 2013 | Self-directed longer satisfy people’s needs, a curious lifestyle starts to prevail. PHOTOGRAPHY | 24

AWARD Prize for Excellence in 2012 Shanghai Competition of Cardboard House Construction for High School Students (held by Tongji University)

The Fabrication Festival, annually held at Tongji University, involves a cardboard fabrication competition which invites high school and college teams to construct cardboard houses using only cardboards, bolts, nuts and ropes. High school teams are required to build a cardboard house of five square meters. Cardboard parts can be fabricated before hand, but the final assembling and construction should be finished only at the competition scene in one day.

Skyscraper Braced Frames: Design, Fabrication and Testing Four-week research project in Research Science Institute(RSI) Project Title Innovative Braced frame geometries for skyscrapers through structural optimization Under the direction of Caitlin Mueller and Professor John Ochsendorf Building Technology Program, MIT

Aim Braced frame structures, commonly used in skyscrapers, are efficient in resisting lateral wind load. However, the currently available braced frame geometries are very limited. This project aims at finding braced frame geometries that are both efficient in material usage and geometrically innovative by using the structureFIT platform. The platform, developed by Caitlin Mueller in MIT, is based on an evolutionary algorithm that helps users explore new structural forms.

A screenshot of structureFIT exploring a seven-member structure

Design I first set up a simulating virtual model and set some initial designs by combining common braced frame geometries. Through the evolutionary process in structureFIT, I designed six geometries.

Adaptive Beam String Structures:

Lightweight structures with high stiffness and a control frame work Individual research project 2012.5-2013.3 Mentor Professor Xiaobing Song. Department of Civil Engineering Shanghai Jiaotong University

AWARDS Silver Medal in International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, & Environment) Project Olympiad 1st Prize in 2012 Shanghai Adolescents Science & Technology Innovation Fair

1

Purpose

Displacement Sensors As loads are added or the environment changes, displacement of the structure occurs. The ultra sonic sensors observe the displacement of the three nodes.

The traditional way to increase a structure’s stiffness is to use more material, which consumes more energy and increases the weight of the structure, and therefore leads to higher transportation costs. By applying adaptive structures, this project offers an alternative method of increasing stiffness whille keeping the structure lightweight.

Application Sicne they are easy to transport and easy to build, adaptive beam string structures can be used mostly in temporary infrustrustures, including temporary bridges and construction platforms.

2

Controller The controller analyzes the displacement data of the three nodes and control the actuators according to an algorithm. Here I use Arduino Mega 2560, and programs it in a PC.

Displacement data of the three nodes observed by sensors with and without adjustment under same loads. The average displacement of the three nodes is decreesed by 83 percent, which shows that the stiffness of the structure is increased to 5.8 times of the original.

3

Actuators The three actuators, electric motors or hydraulic actuators, are actived according to the controller, until the displacement data are within the allowable range.

The Tensegrity Series Sculpture: 27’’ x 10’ x 12’’ Paper: 31’’ x 43’’ (A1) Installations | Wood, rubberband, watercolor on paper 2013 | Self-directed

BALANCE This work consists of the structure itself and its shadow. As the structure devides space, its shadow appears as a pattern that devides an area. The randomly set red lines, griding the paper into different shapes, further accentuate this effect. The red color lumps add variety in density to the two-dimensional space, which creates a feeling of dynamic equilibrium, not only to the graph, but also to the structure and the space in return. INSTALLATION | 36

DANCE With its interleaved shadow lines under the spotlight, the static structure resembles a nimble dancer and delivers a dynamic and lively tone.

DUALITY With an oblique light source, the structure casts a curiously morphed shadow on the paper. The structure and its shadow demonstrate an astonishing metaphor of duality: like human, a spatial form may also have a body and an underlying form.

CONCEPTS

SUNLIGHT AND REAL PLANT WOODEN SETTING RELAXING READING

Issue

Grown up in Shanghai, I have frequently used the city's enormous subway system. Yet i find the experience of waiting in the subway station far from satisfying: The subways create loud and unpleasant noises. Also, the underground setting makes me feel cold and estranged from the natural world.

39 | YUXING WANG

Goal

To create a more peaceful and enjoyable subway waiting experience by designing a waiting room that involves a natural setting with real plants, and to encourage reading as a way of quick relaxation.

The top of the glass column is connected directly to the ground. It enables sunlight to come in as a natural light source for the dome.

The dome is made of wood, with a steel frame inside. The wooden texture has a strong affinity, reconciling the cold tone of the station. The dome is elevated from the ground to create a more private feeling, secluded from the noisy environment.

Reading is efficient both in killing waiting time and in relaxing from the fast pace urban life. A book shelf is placed here, where people can borrow newspapers, magazines, or books.

CONCEPTS UNDULANT SHAPE PRIVACY COMMUNITY INTERACTION

Purpose

2

The purpose of this design is to create audience seats for an outdoor theater. I am inspired by the shapes of natural food ingredients, such as cheese and egg, and aims at creating a friendly and cozy sitting experience for users.

Seats

The seats are surrounded by colourful egg-shaped shells. These shells can be manually rotated, so the user can choose either an open or private space. When pulled up, the shells can protect users from severe weather and offer more privacy.

Slope

The undulant surface of the stand immitates the form of cheese. Along with the "eggs", it creates a lively atmosphere with the vibrant colors and lively curve patterns. With this vivacious design, I hope to build a friendly place for people in a community to socialize and have entertainment. 3D DESIGN | 42
