Star Filter for Mac JUL 03, 2010 07:40P.M.
We have some funny traditions here in the U.S., especially when it comes to the Fourth of July. A typical Fourth goes like this: 1) Wake up. Go to beach or pool and acquire sunburn. 2) Eat an oblong food (i.e. hot dog, corn, popsicle, beer, etc). 3) Set things on fire and watch them explode. Scarab Labs has released the Mac version of its Star Filter plug-in for Photoshop.
Obviously, the best and most anticipated part of the day is #3! But after the fireworks show, we’re left in an anticlimactic daze. Not to fret: we found the perfect solution…painting your photos with sparklers!

Benjamin Lowy: Oil on Water JUL 02, 2010 01:00A.M.
All images © Benjamin Lowy / VII Network Tendrils and plumes of oil have covered the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, leaving a viscous mess in the open sea. The environmental disaster that was caused by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill is horrible and will no doubt have a long lasting impact on the Gulf. While on assignment for GQ magazine covering the disaster, I was struck by how beautiful the congealed pockets of crude were. Floating on the sea, swirling with the seawater, they looked strangely like abstract paintings. These are close up images of the pools of oil that stagnate on the surface of the Gulf. —Benjamin Lowy

Living With The Dead (9 photos) JUN 30, 2010 01:00A.M.
All Photos © James Chance In the center of the crowded Philippine capital of Manila, home to more than 11 million people, lies the North Cemetery. The final resting place of several Filipino Presidents, celebrities, and hundreds of thousands of the city’s Catholic dead, the cemetery is also home to a living community of over 2,000 people. In a country where around 40 percent of people live below the poverty line, and overpopulation in Manila is reaching desperate proportions, the cemetery provides a unique residence for the hundreds of families that live and work within its walls. Leica to Donate €0.50 to Charity for Every New Follower on Twitter JUN 29, 2010 05:14P.M.
7 AM is a whoooole other dimension. It’s a land of poofy hair, sleepy eyes, and disheveled jammies (with an occasional appearance of a bad-breathed grouch). In a stroke of genius, Meredith Andrews decided she was going to venture into this uncharted land. Yes, it was terrifying, but like a brave, camera-wielding Magellan, she did it!
Starting tomorrow, Leica will donate €0.50 to the Association for International Cancer Research (AICR) for every new follower of Leica’s Twitter account.
She woke people up and photographed them in their sleepiest state.

But looking at her portraits reveals something pretty amazing: we’re one and the same! Everyone gets sleepy, and everyone looks funny in the morning. And that’s kind of great.
Unchartered Photography: 7 AM Portraits
We hope Meredith will inspire you to jostle your loved ones awake tomorrow for an early Tuesday morning photo session. They’ll LOVE it. Promise. ;-)
