rums beats, dancing crowds and a mesmerised audience watching as dozens of drummers and percussionits play their hearts out... This scene has become a common sight at the Deer Park in the past year where the Delhi Drum Circle meets twice a week. The Circle is an informal meet of people who love to play musical instruments, especially those who play hand drums. Everyone is welcome to join in or simply stand by and enjoy.
Started in January 2010 by Delhi-based Rakesh Mathur, London-based Margot Bigg and Anisa Nariman, the Delhi Drum Circle now sees hundreds of people joining them in their every meet. “Drum circles have their origins in West Africa. Ours is a meet up for percussionists of all levels to play hand drums together in a friendly and 100% non -commercial environment,” says Bigg. “This is all for fun. There aren’t any fixed members or fixed instruments that people must play. In fact, we have Israeli musicians, saxophone players and

people from all walks of life joining us. But, most of the participants are hand drummers,” says Mathur. Currently, they meet at the Deer Park, but members are looking out for more such venues where they can get together. “The Deer Park is the favourite spot for our gatherings, where we can sit in a circle. But we do need more spots in Delhi to hold these kind of gatherings. Since we have women and children as members of the group, security becomes a big issue. There should be more secure gardens and parks where drum circles
such as this can take place,” says Mathur. It’s not just about the music, as for many, these drumming sessions have a therapeutic effect. “I love it. It is so good. You play for two hours and then you feel so rejuvenated. Lot of people come here just because they find it therapeutic, while others come to practice and jam,” says Jasleen Kapany, who joined Delhi Drum Circle nine months back. This twicemonthly drum circle meets on alternate Saturdays or Sundays. The members are expected to get their own musical instruments.
