Visiting your tailor is not always an easy task. To place an order with this tailor in a south Delhi market, one needs to climb a ladder. Only in Delhi!

eard of two-in-one bargain shopping? This is exactly what we experienced at the E Block Main Market in Hauz Khas, South Delhi. With almost all the shops selling two diverse goods under the same roof, the market has a distinct identity to itself. The shopkeepers informed us that a decade ago, most of the shops in this market were photo labs, packed with huge machinery. But since that technology of photography became obsolete, they had no better way to utilise the space. Hence, they started selling two

diverse goods.

Two-in-one!

Shopkeepers, here, have used various innovative ways to utilise vacant spaces. “We sell soft toys as well as photo frames,” says K C Narang, owner of Ajanta Photo Centre. A few steps away from Ajanta Photo Centre, you will find Neelkamal Boutique and Art Frames, which sells synthetic art frames with the range starting from R20 per square foot, and has a boutique as well. At Gupta Cellnet, which is in the same lane, mobile phones are repaired and art frames are sold, too. Another shop, MK

Opticals and Name Plates, sells spectacles and sunglasses as well as vehicle and house name plates. There is something for the book lovers and the music fans, too. Raju Book and Music store has a large collection of latest music and film CDs along with magazines and the evergreen romantic novels — Mills and Boon (priced at R100). Check out Arora Magazine, Music and Kurta Centre for some fancy kurtas.

Something glassy, something classy!

The market also stores various kinds of glasswares and glass products. Visit Glass Villa, to find a variety of exquisite

glasswares. Check out the wall mirrors, with a starting price of R500, and coloured Tiffany lamps, available for R4,000 and above. One can also buy paintings and get them framed here.

For the hunger pangs! Though the market has limited eating options, the 36-year-old Jai Sons Sweets and Restaurant is the perfect place to kill your hunger pangs. While here, try samosas (R8 per piece) and Bedmi Aloo (R40 per plate). Don’t miss the steaming hot jalebi. You can also head to Grub Pub, which sells Chinese and Indian food and also functions as a coffee shop. For Frankie lovers, a visit to Tibbs Frankies, is a must.

Delhi is a strange city, it conceals its faults in the guise of development and tradition. To an outsider, the city entices with the promise of realisation of all their dreams, but when you actually start dwelling here, you realise, all is not well with the Capital. Firstly, the unending traffic jams drive you crazy, and then there’s the attitude of Delhiites, which will just add to your woes. I come from South. Clearly, with my lingo and attire, I am the ode one out here. And people in my college, and hostel look at me as if I am an alien. I do know that there are many good people here, who always try to help you out, and make your stay a pleasant experience. But its always pain that you remember in the end. The city is beautiful, I am never tired of exploring this place and gorging

A multi-level vehicle parking is coming up in the middle of the market, which is like a ray of hope to the shopkeepers here. “Ever since the construction of the parking has begun, bigger brands have started investing in the market. We will soon give a competition to the Green Park market,” says KC Narang, who owns a 30year-old shop in the market.

on its delicious street food. For a foodie, Delhi is a haven. In fact, the city has unlimited joys and facilities to offer. I just wonder, why people in a place like this can’t be happy and pleasant to others. Outsiders like me, deserve friendly treatments, not abhorrence or insult. Gauti Dear Diary, With the launch of the metro services in Bengaluru, after Kolkata and Delhi, our metro cities are coming of age. The newer entrant always learns from the experience of the older players, just as Delhi learnt from the experience of Kolkata. Hopefully, Bengaluru can make the best of the combined experiences of the two metro cities and take the metro usage to the next level of capability for intra-city transport. Ashish Rai
