thletic achievements may not be its forte, but the National Zoological Park of Delhi or simply Delhi Zoo is trying hard to pitch in to the Capital’s spruce up plans ahead of the Commonwealth Games. The Tigers’ enclosure at the Zoo, where the six Royal Bengal tigers of the zoo roam, is all set for a revamp with the existing 10 feet waterfall being extended by another 15 feet, and decorated with white stones for a more natural effect.

Souvenir for visitors

Beautification “The work will start any day now. And the waterfall will be joined with the small neher (channel) to give it a good visual. It will be nice for the tigers too as they love to swim in water,” confirms Anand Krishna, Joint Director of the Zoo. The zoo authority is making some additional water arrangements for this, as the zoo is facing a severe water crisis. Geeta B, a young entrepreneur, who often brings her children Vanshika and Keshav to the zoo, points out,

“Surely it is a nice idea, but this should have been done during the summers, keeping the needs of the tigers in mind as well. Throughout

summer, the neher has been nearly dry.” Chitrangada Joshi, a creative writer says, “My only concern is that the

authorities should maintain the waterfall post the Commonwealth Games (CWG). That is where the test lies. It’s easy to beautify

Zoos in cities and countries abroad such as Seoul, San Diego, Singapore, Salzburg have a zoo souvenir shop that stock items such as: t-shirts, hats, soft toys, key chains for visitors to take back with them. The Delhi Zoo is also planning one on similar lines. The authorities are looking out for toy-making companies that would make zoo animal replicas. “We have six Bengal tigers and 13 white tigers. They are the pride of our zoo and Shera is the official mascot of the 19th Commonwealth Games. So, the tigers will be the best souvenirs apart from the lion-tailed macaque, red jungle fowls, baboons, hippopotamus and giraffe,” says Krishna.” “The souvenir shop will also have T-shirts, caps, books on Delhi Zoo animals and more,” he adds. Spread over a sprawling 176 acres of land, the Delhi zoo gets an average of 19 lakh visitors every year.

DIARY

Dear diary, Yesterday evening, when I was walking back from work I was held by the sight of a pigeon lying on the other side of the road. The pigeon apparently seemed thirsty and in need of help. Just as I was about to approach the hapless creature, a young girl, barely 6 or 7-yearold emerged beside it and lifted the pigeon in her hands. She held it in one hand, while carrying a leaking polythene bag, containing water in the other. She sprinkled some on the pigeon, while the rest she helped it drink. Tattered clothes, soiled hair, and barefeet, she was a picture of magnanimity in destitution. Touched by her selfless act, I felt belittled by that little girl. For the remaining part of the day, I kept on thinking of her face shining as a bright spot on humanity. Guneet Kaur
