ONE FASHION WEEK... WILL THEY? WON’T THEY? Jaydeep Ghosh

L

ast week it seemed that all may be lost in the bid to have one fashion week in the Capital, as the Fashion and Design Promotion Council (FDPC) announced the India Fashion and Design Week; and FDCI seemed unwilling to compromise on its demands. But, while torrential downpour brought Delhi to a halt on Monday, the fashion fraternity made progress when teams from FDCI and FDPC met at The Grand to iron out issues. The arduous meeting was attended by Vijay Singh, Secretary General and CEO of FDPC, Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI and senior

designers from both camps including Tarun Tahiliani, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Raghavendra Rathore, Manish Arora, JJ Valaya, Ashish Soni, Rina Dhaka, Ranna Gill, Leena Singh, Rohit Gandhi and Anjana Bhargava, who debated on issues with Singh and Sethi to arrive at a consensus. Issues discussed at the meeting were: ■ Term of the FDCI-FDPC pact ■ Title Sponsorship ■ Conditions for FDCIFDPC to be on equal footing The FDPC had earlier sought a five-year pact with FDCI, which was shot down by FDCI members. Now, alternative time-spans are

being considered to arrive on a mutually-agreeable term. Next came the issue of the title sponsor. The FDPC put forth Sahara Group’s name, which FDCI rejected as it has a contractual agreement with Wills Lifestyle (ITC) for three years. Even though the FDPC CEO and many designers argued in favour of Sahara (if it offers more financial support), a majority of designers (including those considered part of FDPC) preferred Wills Lifestyle as the title sponsor. However, talks are still open to induct Sahara as the sponsor for new fashion properties. The FDCI and FDPC have also agreed to be on an equal footing for the upcoming

fashion week. When contacted, Sethi said that FDCI “finally sees light at the end of the tunnel”. On there being a single fashion week, he said, “There are too many slips between the cup and the lip. But the possibility of a joint FDCI-FDPC fashion week is high.” Vijay Singh of FDPC, said, “The meeting had a positive outcome; most issues were sorted amicably. Now all designers have come together for a single fashion week under FDPC.” If the meeting on Monday night is not subject to any more unexpected flip-flops, a formal announcement is now expected in approximately 10 days.
