HISTORY

Founded in the 10th century, Würzburg served as the home of powerful prince-bishops for many centuries. It is renowned for the Residence, regarded as one of the finest palaces in Europe and a high point of Baroque art (also UNESCO cultural world heritage). Würzburg is also home to one of the oldest churches in Germany, built in the 8th century on top of a former pagan shrine. One of its most famous structures, Festung Marienberg, is a fortress which now surrounds the church.

FABIRC: URBAN FABRIC IN 1:20000 MAP NATURAL FABRIC AND URBAN FABRIC

The northern north of the city is large farmland, but it is an important university area close to the city center. Rivers and farmland make up the important green areas of the city, while the rest is a large urban structure: streets, buildings, Bridges, parks, etc.

DJCAD Architecture Year 4 2021/22 - OTHERWISE

THE EAST AND THE WEST AREA

The main city can be divided into two parts by the river, which is similar to the size of the city, but the eastern part of the city is clearly more prosperous. The eastern part of the area includes more green areas than western.

DJCAD Architecture Year 4 2021/22 - OTHERWISE

FABIRC: URBAN FABRIC IN 1:20000 MAP RIVER AS UMBILICAL CORD

With the division of the city into two green areas, the river becomes the only link between the two green areas to the north and south. The thin river is like an umbilical cord linking the green areas north and south, not only mechanically, but also intrinsically.

DJCAD Architecture Year 4 2021/22 - OTHERWISE

MULTIPLE REGIONS

The whole large area can be divided into several smaller areas. This division is not strictly based on any kind of administrative division or natural division, but is achieved through a fabric distinction.

FABIRC: URBAN FABRIC IN 1:20000 MAP NUTRITION AREA

River is often where urban development takes place. However, if the river is too straight and the river flows too fast, it is often difficult to help cities develop, but rivers that twist and turn are often more likely to develop cities such as Shanghai's Lujiazui.

DJCAD Architecture Year 4 2021/22 - OTHERWISE

MULTIPLE NODES

With this division, many interesting nodes were discovered. Interestingly, these nodes are often also special urban spaces, such as railway, farms. port, supermarket, etc. These nodes spatially articulate different functional spaces and they are very specific.

ELEMENTS WITHIN THE "RING"

Overview The city fabric of Würzburg is different from many typical cities, Beijing - Symmetrical, Pairs - Centralised, New York - Gridded ... The city fabric of Würzburg is more hybridized and xomplex. But after some sensible analysis, this complexity can be summarised as a superposition of several layers and languages. The centre of Würzburg is surrounded by hills. To the west lies the 266 metre Marienberg and the Nikolausberg (359 m) to the south of it. The Main flows through Würzburg from the south-east to the north-west. - wikipedia Network The network of Würzburg is derived from the development of the main roads. The railway station is obviously very important for Würzburg. Other roads are extended according to the railway station and spread towards the central area.

Linear Unlike the division of ‘N,S,W,E‘, it is more reasonable to categorise road language as two types 'eastwest' and 'semi-circular'. Circluar Friedrich-Ebert Ring is the dominant player in the urban fabirc and together with the ensemble houses they form the ring language. Establishing the Field - Wurzburg, Germany

These areas take care of the city centre environment, but on the other hand they also make the city centre more isolated. The universities and the important buildings are on the edge of the two colours and they connect these two different properties.

START WITH THE 'OUTLOOK TOWER' Cities in the past, at their very heart, contained a special place where their gods, ideals and aspirations dwelled. The Parthenon in Athens, the Roman Forum, the great cathedrals in the Middle Ages. Human spirit, even in a secular society, still needs this sacred space for reflection and contemplation, a place to ponder the imponderable, to think the unthinkable. Geddes thought that such a place for Edinburgh should be in its very heart, in the Old Town.

Tower in 1892. Geddes did not design the Outlook Tower; it had in fact previously been occupied by an optician and still contained optical instruments, but its location at the top of the Royal Mile with a panoramic view over the whole region appealed to him from the outset. From then onwards it became the headquarters and keystone of all his activities in Britain – a hub for the Summer meetings; an Index Museum of the Universe; a Sociological Laboratory Home of the old School of Art; Headquarters of “Geddes and Colleagues” publishing venture.

In answer to the need for a special place in the heart of the Town, Geddes bought the Outlook

THE INFORMATION BOX The idea is to fit as much cultural content into as small a physical volume as possible. This concept aims to respond to technology and civilisation in a virtual form. It is similar to hardware and software in computer science.

THE METAVERSE The metaverse (a portmanteau of “meta-” and “universe”) is a hypothesized iteration of the internet, supporting persistent online 3-D virtual environments through conventional personal computing, as well as virtual and augmented reality headsets. Metaverses, in some limited form, are already present on platforms like VRChat or video games like Second Life. Current metaverse ambitions are centered on addressing technological limitations with modern virtual and augmented reality devices, as well as expanding the use of metaverse spaces to business, education, and retail applications. Numerous entertainment and social media companies have invested in metaverse-related research and development. The metaverse has come to be criticized as a method of public relations building using a purely speculative, “over-hyped” concept based on existing technology. Information privacy and user addiction are concerns within the metaverse, stemming from current challenges facing the social media and video game industries as a whole. The metaverse is described as a means of manufacturing immersive digital spaces for a range of human activity. To achieve this, some iterations of the metaverse involve integration between virtual and physical spaces and virtual economies. Additional qualities include digital persistence and synchronicity in order to better establish a sense of presence in a realistic environment, along with implementing existing social media elements such as avatar identity, content creation, and social acceptability.7

MARK IN THE METAVERSE As June came to an end, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told his employees about an ambitious new initiative. The future of the company would go far beyond its current project of building a set of connected social apps and some hardware to support them. Instead, he said, Facebook would strive to build a maximalist, interconnected set of experiences straight out of sci-fi — a world known as the metaverse. The company’s divisions focused on products for communities, creators, commerce, and virtual reality would increasingly work to realize this vision, he said in a remote address to employees. “What I think is most interesting is how these themes will come together into a bigger idea,” Zuckerberg said. “Our overarching goal across all of these initiatives is to help bring the metaverse to life.” The metaverse is having a moment. Coined in Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson’s 1992 sci-fi novel, the term refers to a convergence of physical, augmented, and virtual reality in a shared online space. Earlier this month, The New York Times explored how companies and products including Epic Games’ Fortnite, Roblox, and even Animal Crossing: New Horizons increasingly had metaverselike elements. (Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has been discussing his desire to contribute to a metaverse for many months now.) In January 2020, an influential essay by the venture capitalist Matthew Ball set out to identify key characteristics of a metaverse. Among them: it has to span the physical and virtual worlds; contain a fully fledged economy; and offer “unprecedented interoperability” — users have to be able to take their avatars and goods from one place in the metaverse to another, no matter who runs that particular part of it. Critically, no one company will run the metaverse — it will be an “embodied internet,” Zuckerberg said, operated by many different players in a decentralized way.9
