THE METAVERSE The metaverse (a portmanteau of “meta-” and “universe”) is a hypothesized iteration of the internet, supporting persistent online 3-D virtual environments through conventional personal computing, as well as virtual and augmented reality headsets. Metaverses, in some limited form, are already present on platforms like VRChat or video games like Second Life. Cur rent metaver se ambitions are centered on a ddress ing technological limitations with modern virtual and augmented reality devices, as well as expanding the use of metaverse spaces to business, education, and retail applications. Numerous entertainment and social media companies have invested in metaverse-related research and development. The metaverse has come to be criticized as a method of public relations building using a purely speculative, “over-hyped” concept based on existing technology. Information privacy and user addiction are concerns within the metaverse, stemming from current challenges facing the social media and video game industries as a whole. The metaverse is described as a means of manufacturing immersive digital spaces for a range of human activity. To achieve this, some iterations of the metaverse involve integration between virtual and physical spaces and virtual economies. Additional qualities include digital persistence and synchronicity in order to better establish a sense of presence in a realistic environment, along with implementing existing social media elements such as avatar identity, content creation, and social acceptability.1

MARK IN THE METAVERSE As June came to an end, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told his employees about an ambitious new initiative. The future of the company would go far beyond its current project of building a set of connected social apps and some hardware to support them. Instead, he said, Facebook would strive to build a maximalist, interconnected set of experiences straight out of sci-fi — a world known as the metaverse. The company’s divisions focused on products for communities, creators, commerce, and virtual reality would increasingly work to realize this vision, he said in a remote address to employees. “What I think is most interesting is how these themes will come together into a bigger idea,” Zuckerberg said. “Our overarching goal across all of these initiatives is to help bring the metaverse to life.” The metaverse is having a moment. Coined in Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson’s 1992 sci-fi novel, the term refers to a convergence of physical, augmented, and virtual reality in a shared online space. Earlier this month, The New York Times explored how companies and products including Epic Games’ Fortnite, Roblox, and even Animal Crossing: New Horizons increasingly had metaverse-like elements. (Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has been discussing his desire to contribute to a metaverse for many months now.) In January 2020, an influential essay by the venture capitalist Matthew Ball set out to identify key characteristics of a metaverse. Among them: it has to span the physical and virtual worlds; contain a fully fledged economy; and offer “unprecedented interoperability” — users have to be able to take their avatars and goods from one place in the metaverse to another, no matter who runs that particular part of it. Critically, no one company will run the metaverse — it will be an “embodied internet,” Zuckerberg said, operated by many different players in a decentralized way.3

The interim London Housing Design Guide was published in 2010 by the London Development Agency and set out Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London's, aspirations for attractive, individual, spacious and green housing in London. A draft version was published in July 2009 and extensive consultation was undertaken which resulted in the production of the interim guidance. The guide is not part of planning policy with the main planning guidance documents remaining the London Plan and the Housing Supplementary Planning Guidance. The guide is instead aimed at complementing planning documents and encouraging designers to aim for the highest quality.

CELLULAR A

A cellular automaton (pl. cellular automata, abbrev. CA) is a discrete model of computation studied in automata theory. Cellular automata are also called cellular spaces, tessellation automata, homogeneous structures, cellular structures, tessellation structures, and iterative arrays. Cellular automata have found application in various areas, including physics, theoretical biology and microstructure modeling.

AUTOMATA A cellular automaton consists of a regular grid of cells, each in one of a finite number of states, such as on and off (in contrast to a coupled map lattice). The grid can be in any finite number of dimensions. For each cell, a set of cells called its neighborhood is defined relative to the specified cell. An initial state (time t = 0) is selected by assigning a state for each cell. A new generation is created (advancing t by 1), according to some fixed rule (generally, a mathematical function) that determines the new state of each cell in terms of the current state of the cell and the states of the cells in its neighborhood. Typically, the rule for updating the state of cells is the same for each cell and does not change over time, and is applied to the whole grid simultaneously, though exceptions are known, such as the stochastic cellular automaton and asynchronous cellular automaton. The concept was originally discovered in the 1940s by Stanislaw Ulam and John von Neumann while they were contemporaries at Los Alamos National Laboratory. While studied by some throughout the 1950s and 1960s, it was not until the 1970s and Conway's Game of Life, a two-dimensional cellular automaton, that interest in the subject expanded beyond academia. In the 1980s, Stephen Wolfram engaged in a systematic study of one-dimensional cellular automata, or what he calls elementary cellular automata; his research assistant Matthew Cook showed that one of these rules is Turingcomplete.

CRITIAL RFLECTION When Archigram emerged, architects realised that the solution of connecting communities through megastructures was challenging to realise and, thanks to further technological developments and doctrines such as cybernetics, they began to conceive of more realistic solutions. The Walking City is one of these iconic discursive architectural projects. In this project, the entire city is on a giant moveable machine which can crawl around on the backs of the city's inhabitants nomadically. While The Walking City didn't really get off the ground in reality, subsequent projects have explored it on a smaller scale. The Living Pod, for example, envisages rooms that can be freely moved and assembled within a scaffolding structure. In the Archigram’s Suitaloon project, the architects imagined people inhabiting a small physical space and accessing the broader Cyberspace through internally connected VR devices, allowing them to communicate with others without having to leave their place of residence. This was one of the first architectural explorations of virtual space (VR).

Archigram

Although the work of Archigram was not realised in the UK, the radical and pioneering architectural ideas have been further developed in Japan. The Nakagin Capsule Tower, designed by Kisho Kurokawa, brings to life the moveable rooms in the Living Pod. Built in the 1980s, the BOC Capsule Tower consisted of a number of individual modules that Kisho Kurokawa wanted to be freely movable and mounted on railway tracks so that business people commuting between Osaka and Tokyo could easily work and live there. The information revolution arrived soon after the project was completed - the proliferation of technologies such as telephone, email and video conferencing greatly increased the efficiency of communication, and this reduced the value of the BOC Capsule Tower's design to build social networks through mobile rooms. The cross-territorial dissemination of digital information transcends the transmission and movement of physical space.

Decoration Magazine In the 1990s, a group of architects and architectural theorists realised how the internet was changing people, urban and architectural spaces, such as Marcos Novak's The Next Babylon project. Human interaction and community formation, which in the past was largely dependent on the real architectural space, was now transposed to the digital space. The relationship between the internet, digital media and architectural space has since been discussed and studied by more architects and scholars, including William J. Mitchell, Benjamin H. Bratton and others.

Metaverse is a concept born in the 1992 novel Avalanche but thrived by Facebook’s 2020 declaration. It is considered the next age after the information era. The coming Metaverse era is a universal virtual world facilitated by virtual and augmented reality headsets. The most prominent feature of the Metaverse is that a digital twin (also called a parallel universe) will be created virtually, which means the functionality and efficiency of architecture in reality is enhanced as physical fundamental for the diverse and creative virtual world. In retrospect, each great innovation divides an era in which life, experience and perception of value are changed forever. In the Internet era, change is made up of countless nodes of technology and application implementation. The maturation of AI and blockchain technology has pulled the meta-universe from science fiction to the near future, and we are now in the early stages of the Metaverse era.

An Evolutionary Architecture

ZHANG Zhuo (Zac) - University of Dundee - Mar. 2022

Metazburg - Studio E/F - Wurzburg, Germany

he project ‘Metazburg’ attempted to imagine the future urban patterns and building form in the Metaverse era based on Gordon Pask’s cybernetics study in An Evolutionary Architecture. First, architecture is considered a living and evolving thing that could evolve through iterative trials. Second, a generative program representing building language, pattern rules and shape grammar is created to generate urban patterns and building form. Finally, the evolution criteria could evaluate the computational outcome and rank the best results. This program is applicable to any site and compatible with many architectural functions, including cultural and educational functions, which defines the topic ‘unsite’ and ‘outlook tower’. To clearly show the internal environment, space, and overall structure of the unit, an augmented reality program, Section Clipper, based on Unity 3D, has been developed. Users can deepen their understanding of human activity and the relationship between people and space through this unique program. I believe that the architects of the future should think about the site not only in terms of the physical dimension but also systematically design the information network behind the physical space as a whole. Unsite is not a specific actual site but an illusory concept.

the Section Clipper

DJCAD Architecture Year 4 2021/22 - OTHERWISE

Metazburg - Studio E/F - Wurzburg, Germany

In response to this concept, a computational design approach has been introduced. This approach is characterized by the fact that it can be used for any realistic site, any shape or contour, and tells the user the optimal result from a computer graphics perspective. Both the cellular Automata system and the 'Section Clipper' software can be used in any design, so this is not just a Wurzburg design but a universal design. AR brings more interactivity compared to the traditional realm of spatial design. Users are literally moving around in physical space so that users can deepen their understanding of human activity and the relationship between people and space. Advances in technology will superimpose multiple virtual worlds on our physical world, and human life will be expanded endlessly. The architecture industry needs the Metaverse precisely because architecture itself fits the characteristics of elements such as fashion, avant-garde, high-end, virtual, sci-fi, ubiquitous, collaborative and interoperable. We need to increase the efficiency of the internet to support the construction industry. As we enter the digital age, virtual reality technologies such as BIM and VR have brought new ways of expression to the field of architecture. The immersive experience has dramatically lowered the cognitive threshold between the spatial experience and the experiencer. It has also made it possible to take elements such as materials and details into account at the outset of the architectural design, freeing it from the limitations of traditional methods and media. The vehicle and medium of architecture is changing, moving from the real world to the virtual world. At present, the application of Metaverse in architecture is more in design, but in the future, the possibilities are endless and it is believed that architecture in the Metaverse will provide us with a new world experience.
