Historic City Center. The city’s colonial beauty is mainly centered in this area, here you will find all the cultural activities and tourist attractions; it is also the main stage for festivals.

Guadalupe

Golf

Conurbada con Zacatecas, encontramos esta ciudad que alberga varias joyas culturales, como el Museo de Guadalupe y varios santuarios que deben visitarse. Te recomendamos hacer un recorrido por el municipio.

Guadalupe. Neighboring Zacatecas we find the city of Guadalupe which houses various cultural gems, such as the Museum of Guadalupe and various churches that are a must see. Don’t forget to take a tour of the town itself.

Zacatecas cuenta con dos campos para practicar el llamado deporte de precisión: Club de Golf Zacatecas y Fresnillo Club de Golf.

Golf. Zacatecas has two fields for practicing this sport: Zacatecas Golf Club and Golf Club of Fresnillo.

Arqueología Los sitios precolombinos constituyen importantes testimonios de la cosmovisión y la grandeza del desarrollo de antiguas civilizaciones. Estas zonas pueden dar una evidencia mucho más clara de las diferentes épocas en que fueron habitadas. Cuando se habla de arqueología mexicana, la mayor parte de las veces se escucha solo de sitios ubicados en el centro y sur del país, muy remotamente se mencionan lugares localizados hacia el norte de México; es poco sabido que en Zacatecas se localizan interesantes zonas arqueológicas como La Quemada y Altavista.

Archeology. Our pre–Columbine sites stand as an important testimony of the dominating world vision and greatness of our ancient civilizations; these areas help give us a clearer picture of the different eras in which they were inhabited.

Usually when speaking of Mexican archeology, it is mainly the sites to the south and center of the country which are listed, we rarely hear about the places found to the north of Mexico, reason why it is not widely known that in Zacatecas intriguing archeological sites can be found; such as La Quemada and Altavista.

Estilo de vida En Zacatecas el estilo de vida no es muy agitado, ya que su zona metropolitana es pequeña. Los habitantes tienen un poco más de tiempo para compartir con la familia y dedicarse a los placeres que brinda la ciudad. Si estás de visita, aprovecha este ritmo para tomar un respiro.

Life Style. The way of life in Zacatecas is quite tranquil, due to the small size of its metropolitan area; it gives people a little more time to share with their families and to enjoy the pleasures that the city provides. When visiting take advantage of this pace to rest and unwind.

Charrería En Zacatecas tenemos el Monumental Lienzo Charro. El deporte nacional se ha vuelto parte de los fines de semana. Si en tu visita quieres ver una charreada, no dudes en pedir información, quizá esté programada alguna.

Charrería. In Zacatecas you will find the Monumental Lienzo Charro. Charrería is a national equestrian type sport which has become a weekend tradition. If during your visit you would like to see a charreada, do not hesitate to ask for information, most likely there will be one scheduled.

Gastronomía: patrimonio cultural intangible del Estado La cocina zacatecana remite a las costumbres castellanas, endulzadas plácidamente con el firme carácter de nuestra cultura mestiza. Cada receta posee secretos culinarios que le brindan un sello particular que la hace deliciosa. Entre los platillos típicos resaltan la birria, preparada con carne de ganado menor, cocinada al vapor o a las brasas, y las gorditas de maíz rellenas de diferentes guisos que componen un espléndido colorido y una gama amplia de sabores.

Gastronomy: an intangible State Heritage. The food in Zacatecas invokes Castilian traditions, pleasantly sweetened by the firm character of our mestizo culture. Each recipe holds culinary secrets which give it a distinctive seal, making it delicious. Among our most emblematic dishes we have birria, a spicy dish typically made of steamed or grilled mutton or goat meat, and corn gorditas stuffed with different dishes that make up a splendidly wide range of colors and flavors.

Festivities. The folklore of Zacatecas is also expressed through its dances, music, customs and legends, manifested by its people as a language of their traditions. Regional dances are the most frequent form of expression during religious festivities; you can appreciate the traditional dances of the matachines, caballitos, tastuanes, indios and of palma de pluma; the most common styles of dance are the jarabes, Jerez style and the dance of Mexicapán (typically to the tune of tamborazo music), also the crews of Valaparaíso and Morelos, as well as the Sound of Nochistlán, who are traditionally accompanied by mariachi music.

Callejoneadas Estos paseos se dan por calles, barrios y plazas del centro de la ciudad de Zacatecas y en algunas poblaciones del interior del Estado. Estos paseos van acompañados por un típico tamborazo, y en el trayecto se degusta mezcal regional o la bebida típica del lugar. Esta costumbre refleja importantes aspectos de la antigua convivencia y relación entre los sectores populares, y en algunos casos se remite a las relaciones entre trabajadores mineros, a quienes se brindaba una relajación a sus arduas jornadas cotidianas.

Callejoneadas. These walking serenades take place through the streets, neighborhoods and town squares of the city center of Zacatecas and in some other towns in the state.

These walks are accompanied by a traditional tamborazo, and during the journey mezcal or other regional drinks are handed out to the participants. This practice reflects important aspects of a former harmony in the relationships between citizens, and it also referees back to relations between miners for whom these events where occasionally provided for their relaxation after their arduous daily work.

Vida nocturna Por la noche, Zacatecas se llena de vida en bares típicos, restaurantes y antros. La zona del Centro Histórico es perfecta para caminar y encontrar varios lugares para divertirse y tomar cocteles o bebidas típicas. Fuera del centro, rumbo al sur, puedes encontrar otras propuestas, necesitarás coche o taxi para llegar.

Night life. By night Zacatecas comes alive in its bars, restaurants and night clubs. The Historical city center is perfect for walking through at night and finding several places to have fun and enjoy a few of the local drinks. Outside of the city center, towards the south, you will find other options, but you will need a car or taxi to reach them.

Los centros artesanales por excelencia son el Instituto de Desarrollo Artesanal del Estado de Zacatecas (IDEAZ), que cuenta con un espacio para exhibición y venta de productos, y el Centro Platero de Zacatecas, ubicado en la ex hacienda de Bernárdez. Para compras más casuales puedes ir a Galerías Zacatecas, una plaza comercial donde se encuentran prestigiosas marcas nacionales e internacionales.

Shopping (artisanal). Thanks to the artisanal creativity of the people of Zacatecas, silver, cantera stone and textile fibers become true works of highly valued art. These pieces can be acquired in shops, workshops and in the city’s artisan centers, where you will also find embroideries, artisan yarns, hand– woven fabrics, piteado saddlery, wrought iron and semiprecious stones. The artisan centers par excellence are the Instituto de Desarrollo Artesanal del Estado de Zacatecas (Artisan Development Institute of the State of Zacatecas ), known by its Spanish acronym IDEAZ, which has a space dedicated to exhibitions and sales, and the Centro Platero de Zacatecas (Silversmith Center of Zacatecas), located in the ex–hacienda of Bernárdez. For a more casual shopping experience you can visit Galerías Zacatecas, a shopping center where you will find prestigious national and international brands.

Turismo de reuniones En Zacatecas se ha creado un excelente complejo para realizar todo tipo de exposiciones, congresos y eventos: el Palacio de Convenciones. En esa zona, que es de las más nuevas de la ciudad, también se encuentra Ciudad Administrativa, que alberga casi todas las oficinas de Gobierno del Estado y varias dependencias federales. A pocos metros hay varios hoteles y está la plaza comercial Galerías Zacatecas.

Business Tourism. In Zacatecas an excellent resort for all kinds of exhibitions, conferences and events has been created: The Palacio de Convenciones (Conference center). In this area, which is one of the newer parts of the city, you will also find the Ciudad Administrativa (Administrative city), home to almost all of the state government and various federal government offices. Meters away you will find several hotels and the shopping center Galerías Zacatecas.

Romantic Tourism. Because of its beautiful places to hold events, the city of Zacatecas has been characterized as an excellent host for weddings: the city is full of marvelous churches, attractive spaces for photography, and all the services necessary to leave a lasting impression; it also has important wedding organizers, caterers, photographers and florists all of them offering the best of prices.

El clima en Zacatecas es muy variante, en casi todo el año puedes despertar con un poco de frío, pero a medio día tal vez estarás con calor; es predominantemente seco, con una temperatura promedio de 16 ºC. Climate. The weather in Zacatecas is very wavering, the mornings and evening will be cool but by midday the temperature tends to rise considerably, it is predominantly dry weather with an average temperature of 16° C.

¿Qué ropa usar en Zacatecas?

Por su altura (2 496 msnm), el clima de la ciudad capital siempre tendrá mañanas y noches frescas, por ello te recomendamos traer algo ligeramente abrigador; si te trasladas a otros municipios, el clima varía un poco, te recomendamos llevar protección solar, ropa y zapatos cómodos.

Appropriate Clothing for Comfort. Due to its altitude (2 496 MASL) the city’s climate will always consist of cool mornings and evenings, because of this we recommend the use of a light jacket or similar to keep you warm; if you travel to other towns the climate will vary slightly, we recommend you bring sunscreen, as well as comfortable clothes and shoes.

Hospitals. Zacatecas offers various private and public hospitals suitable for any emergency.

Lo que se acepta en todos los establecimientos es la moneda nacional, el peso; si traes otro tipo de divisa, lo mejor será buscar una casa de cambio y hacer la conversión.

Currency. The national currency, the peso, is the only accepted payment in most establishments; if you have with you any other type of currency it is best to find an exchange office, many of which are readily available throughout the city.

Códigos telefónicos Los números de área más comunes en el Estado son 492, en Guadalupe (la misma que en la capital zacatecana); 493, en Fresnillo; 494, en Jerez, y 478, en Calera. Para llamadas a Estados Unidos y Canadá es necesario digitar 001 antes del código de área.

Acceso para discapacitados La ciudad cuenta con rampas de acceso en todo el Centro Histórico, en algunos museos y en los centros comerciales.

Wheelchair Access. The city has wheelchair ramps throughout the Historic city center, in some of the museums and in the shopping centers. There are also special parking spaces.

Servicio de autobuses locales Existen varias rutas por toda la zona metropolitana, es mejor preguntar la ruta que te lleva al lugar que vayas. Normalmente las paradas están expuestas con un señalamiento de autobús. El servicio comienza a las 6:00 y termina a las 21:00; el costo en promedio es de 6.50 pesos.

Local Bus Services. There are various bus routes throughout the metropolitan area, it is better to ask for information on how to reach your destination before getting on the bus.

The Stops are usually visibly indicated. Most busses run from 6:00 to 21:00 and the average fare is 6.50.

Taxis Los taxis en Zacatecas son fáciles de diferenciar, son blancos con letras y números en color rojo; deben traer taxímetro; las tarifas van de 25 pesos en el primer cuadro de la ciudad hasta 50 en la zona conurbada de Zacatecas.

Taxis. Taxis in Zacatecas are easy to distinguish; they are white with large red letters and numbers; all of them must have a taximeter and the fare goes from 25 pesos within the main city center and up to 50 pesos to the outskirts of the city.

Museo Manuel M. Ponce

Considero un deber de todo compositor mexicano ennoblecer la música de su patria dándole forma artística, revistiéndola con el ropaje de la polifonía y conservando amorosamente las músicas populares que son expresión del alma nacional.

Manuel M. Ponce

Manuel M. Ponce cobra vida en un espacio único en la capital zacatecana: el recién inaugurado museo homónimo, que alberga partituras, objetos personales y música del compositor fresnillense. El museo tiene también una sala de conciertos en la que se realizan presentaciones de música popular y de cámara.

Gracias a la tecnología con la que cuenta el recinto, podrás ver y escuchar al músico sentado en su viejo piano tocando intermezzo, así podrás imaginar las noches de desvelo en que Ponce, exponente clave del nacionalismo musical mexicano, compuso las más bellas y sonadas melodías del cancionero popular mexicano.

El guion curatorial contempla una vasta experiencia para los sentidos; la interacción sonora te transportará al mundo musical de uno de los compositores mexicanos más importantes de los últimos tiempos, quien, en su mística, procla-

Manuel M. Ponce comes to life in a unique space in the capital city: the newly opened eponymous museum, which houses sheet music, personal objects and music created by the fresnillo–born composer. The museum also has a concert hall in which concerts of popular and chamber music take place.

Thanks to the modern technology used within the museum, you will be able to see and listen to the musician seated at his antique piano playing intermezzo, you will be imagining the sleepless nights in which Ponce, key exponent of the Mexican musical nationalism, composed the beautiful and melodious songs of popular tradition.

The curatorial script contemplates a wealth of experiences for the senses; the sonorous interaction will transport you into the musical world of one of Mexico’s most impormaba como manifiesto de la época que los compositores tienen la obligación de inspirarse en los cantos populares y en la música de su país para embellecer las canciones enalteciéndolas artísticamente a través del rescate de lo popular.

Ponce, como el mantel que cubría la mesa del comedor que, de manera casi mágica, está firmado por setenta notables músicos de la época como Igor Stravinski, Manuel de Falla, Grace More y Carlos Chávez, entre otros, con quienes convivía durante interminables tardes musicales.

También hay cerca de cuatro mil documentos que conforman el acervo donado al estado de Zacatecas por el también compositor y pianista Carlos Vázquez: cartas, partituras, documentos personales, libros, revistas, recortes de periódicos y hojas sueltas, entre las que apareció lo que sería un segundo concierto para piano y orquesta del autor de “Estrellita”.

Zacatecas suena bien y, como tierra de grandes artistas, el Museo Manuel M. Ponce es el espacio perfecto para que, durante tus recorridos por el Centro Histórico, disfrutes de sus siete salas ubicadas en la Ciudadela del Arte, complejo cultural en que conviven recintos como el Museo Zacatecano, la Cineteca y la Fototeca, entre otros.

We ensure you that you will be able to visually and audibly leisure through the eight hundred square meters of the museum, which in its interior houses unique and valuable pieces of Manuel M. Ponce’s life, such as his dining room tablecloth, which is signed by seventy notable musicians of the era such as Igor Stravinski, Manuel de Falla, Grace More and Carlos Chávez, among others, with whom he shared endless musical evenings.

There are also nearly four thousand documents that are a part of the collection donated to the state of Zacatecas by the composer and pianist Carlos Vázquez: letters, scores, personal documents, books, magazines, newspaper clippings and lose pages among which appeared what would be a second concert for piano and orchestra by the author of “Estrellita” (Little Star).

Zacatecas sounds good and, as a land of great artists, the Museum Manuel M. Ponce offers the perfect space for you to enjoy its seven galleries in the Ciudadela del Arte (Citadel of Art), cultural complex that encloses spaces such as the Museum of Zacatecas, the Cinematheque and the Photo Library.

Zacatecas is undoubtedly a city of light, color and history; when strolling through its streets, alleys and town squares it is inevitable to not sigh when gazing upon its unique beauty.

One of the main attractions in this city is the large number of museums, where you will discover items that play an important role in the history of our cultural heritage and which will help you better understand our past and our present.

Museo Rafael Coronel

Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez Por iniciativa del artista zacatecano Manuel Felguérez, nuestra ciudad cuenta con el único museo especializado en el arte abstracto de América Latina. Este museo surge en 1997 gracias a la donación de un acervo importante de las obras del maestro Felguérez; alberga una colección de los principales pintores abstractos que hicieron su carrera artística en México. El museo tiene obras de Pedro Coronel, Fernando de Syslo, Omar Rayo, Kazuya Sakai, Lilia Carrillo, Vicente Rojo, Juan Soriano, Fernando García Ponce, Brian Nissen, Jordi Boldó y Francisco Castro Leñero, entre otros.

Abstract Art Museum Manuel Felguérez. By initiative of the Zacatecas born artist Manuel Felguérez, our city is home to the only museum specialized in abstract art in Latin America.

It was established in 1997 thanks to the donation of an important collection of master Felguérez’s work; the museum also houses a collection by the leading abstract painters who made their career in Mexico. Al pasear por las pequeñas y empedradas calles del Centro Histórico de Zacatecas no puedes dejar de visitar uno de los museos con más historia: el Rafael Coronel. Además de deleitarte con sus jardines, encontrarás estas maravillosas salas: Ruth Rivera (que alberga los dibujos y apuntes de Diego Rivera), de la olla (que presenta una colección de vasijas y recipientes prehispánicos), de los tiempos de la Colonia (que exhibe el arte popular que se produjo en el virreinato) y la de los títeres de Rosette Aranda (que muestra una extensa colección de marionetas de los siglos XIX y XX). Aquí se exhibe también la cédula y el título de nobleza y el escudo de armas de la ciudad, así como el concedido, en 1993, por la Unesco como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad.

La magia de este espacio se complementa con una colección de dos mil trescientas máscaras protagonistas de diferentes fiestas populares: diablos, jaguares, moros, tastuanes y gachupines, entre muchos otros.

Rafael Coronel Museum. When strolling through the small cobbled streets of the Historic City Center of Zacatecas you cannot miss one of the most historic museums in the city: The Rafael Coronel museum. In addition to its delightful gardens you will be able to enjoy its marvelous galleries, such as the Ruth Rivera, which houses the drawings and sketches of Diego Rivera, The Pot, which holds prehispanic basins and containers, or the Colonial Times which exhibits popular art produced during the Viceregal Period, as well as the Rosette Aranda Puppets exhibit, with its extensive collection of puppets from the nineteenth and twentieth century. The city’s certificate and tittle of nobility, its original coat of arms as well as the one granted by Unesco naming it a World Heritage site, are all displayed here.

The magic of this space is enhanced by a collection of two thousands three hundred masks, all of them protagonists of different popular festivities: demons, jaguars, moors, tastuans and gachupines, among many others.

Museo Pedro Coronel Este museo está ubicado frente a la plaza de Santo Domingo; el edificio que lo aloja se construyó en el siglo XVIII para albergar el antiguo colegio jesuita de San Luis Gonzaga.

Mientras das un paseo por el Centro Histórico, puedes llegar al espacio dedicado a uno de los pintores zacatecanos más cotizados: Pedro Coronel, quien logró reunir una cantidad importante de objetos que hoy forman parte del museo. La selección que realizó el pintor manifiesta su postura filosófica respecto del desarrollo del arte durante gran parte del siglo XX dividido en dos periodos moderno y contemporáneo. En el museo puedes admirar una de las colecciones más ricas de América Latina, pues cuenta con obras de artistas plásticos como Miró, Dalí, Delacroix, Picasso, Calder y Goya; además, una sala dedicada exclusivamente al pintor zacatecano que contiene aproximadamente cincuenta obras.

Pedro Coronel Museum. This museum is located in front of the Santo Domingo plaza; the building was built in the eighteenth century to house the former Jesuit school of San Luis Gonzaga. As you stroll through the historic center you can stop by one of the spaces dedicated to one of the most famous Zacatecas born painters: Pedro Coronel, who managed to gather a large quantity of the objects that today are part of the museum. The selection made by the painter is a manifestation of his philosophical position on the development of art during a large part of the twentieth century which is dived in two periods modern and contemporary. In the museum you can admire one of the richest art collections in Latin America, since it features works by artists such as Miró, Dalí, Delacroix, Picasso, Calder and Goya; in addition it holds a gallery exclusively dedicated to this last Zacatecas born painter displaying approximately fifty of his works.

Museo Francisco Goitia

Cuando el Museo Zacatecano se trasladó a lo que fuera la antigua Casa de la Moneda, en 2010, se buscó proponer nuevas lecturas sobre su vasto acervo cultural que se conformó por piezas arqueológicas prehispánicas, herrería del periodo colonial, maquinaria antigua de acuñación, monedas impresas en metal y la obra de los artistas zacatecanos Mario Arellano Zajur y Antonio Pintor Rodríguez. Este recinto cultural cuenta con dos colecciones: la de retablos populares del siglo XIX (donada por el zacatecano Fernando Juárez Frías) y la de arte y cultura huichola, que se conforma aproximadamente de doscientos bordados. La cultura huichola es muy rica, y conforma una parte muy importante de un país multiétnico como México.

Museum of Zacatecas. When the Museum of Zacatecas moved to what is now the former Mint, in 2010, new readings of its vast cultural heritage, made up of prehispanic archeological pieces, colonial period ironworks, old coinage machinery, metal printed coins and the works of Zacatecas born artists Mario Arellano Zajur and Antonio Pintor Rodríguez, were proposed. This cultural center has two main collections: Popular altarpieces of the nineteenth century (donated by Fernando Juárez Frías) and Huichol Art and Culture, made up of approximately two hundred embroideries.

The Huichol culture is not only vibrant but also an important part of a multi–ethnic country like Mexico.

Museo de Guadalupe El edificio que alberga este museo fue fundado por fray Antonio Margil de Jesús en 1707; fue uno de los colegios de propagación de fe más importantes de América. Durante varios años, la orden franciscana se dedicó a cuidar las obras artísticas que ahí se exhiben (una de las colecciones de arte virreinal más importante del país). El museo conserva el aspecto original del convento y cuenta con veinte salas permanentes dispuestas a lo largo de dos secciones principales: la histórica, que evoca el entorno conventual de los espacios habitados por los frailes, y la pinacoteca, que es una de las colecciones barrocas más importantes de la pintura mexicana realizada durante el Virreinato. Los claustros alto y bajo son auténticas galerías, pues están cubiertos con imágenes sobre la pasión de Cristo y la vida de San Francisco de Asís.

Las demás áreas exhiben a Cristóbal de Villalpando, Antonio de Torres, Gabriel José de Ovalle, Miguel Cabrera, Luis Juárez, Juan Correa, Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez, Antonio de Torres y al zacatecano Manuel Pastrana.

Museum of Guadalupe. The building that houses the museum was founded by friar Antonio Margil de Jesús in 1707; it was one of America’s most important schools for propagating the Catholic faith. For several years the Franciscan order was dedicated to caring for the artistic works which were exhibited within it (one of the country’s most important viceregal art collections). The museum preserves the original aspect of the convent and has twenty permanent galleries arranged in two main sections: The historical one, evoking the monastic environment of the areas inhabited by the friars and a pinacotheca, which is one of the most important Mexican Baroque art collections of the Viceregal period. The high and low cloisters are authentic galleries of their own, as they are covered in images of the Passion of Christ and the life of saint Francis of Assis. Other areas exhibit artists such as Cristóbal de Villalpando, Antonio de Torres, Gabriel José de Ovalle, Miguel Cabrera, Luis Juárez, Juan Correa, Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez, Antonio de Torres and the Zacatecas born artist Manuel Pastrana.

Museo Universitario de Ciencias Este museo forma parte de la Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas y se encuentra ubicado en Rectoría, un edificio del siglo XIX, que en sus inicios funcionó como cárcel y posteriormente como presidencia municipal y sede del Instituto Zacatecano de Bellas Artes. Fue inaugurado como museo en 1983 para exhibir aparatos para realizar experimentos de física; originalmente fue utilizado como parte del programa de estudios de bachillerato de los alumnos del antiguo Colegio de Ciencias. Dicho gabinete, dividido en siete salas, abarca diversas áreas de la física: mecánica, hidráulica, neumática, calor, acústica, óptica, magnetismo, electricidad estática y dinámica. Cuenta también con una sala para exposiciones, auditorio, biblioteca y videoteca.

University Museum of Science. This museum is part of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas and is located in the university’s rectory building, built in the nineteenth century, which initially worked as a prison and later as City Hall and seat of the Instituto Zacatecano de Bellas Artes (Zacatecas Institute of Fine Art). It became a museum in 1983 to display apparatus for physics experiments; originally it was used as part of the former College of Science’s program for high school students. The space is divided into seven galleries each one covering different areas of physics: mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, heat, acoustics, optics, magnetism, static electricity and dynamics. It also has an exhibition hall, auditorium, library and a video library.

El edificio fue construido por los fundadores de Zacatecas para protegerse de los indígenas; tuvo el nombre de la Casa Fuerte del Patrocinio, y funcionó como asilo, hospicio y albergue; fue remodelado e inaugurado como museo el 24 de junio de 1984, año en el que se conmemoró el septuagésimo aniversario de la Toma de Zacatecas, uno de los actos más relevantes de la Revolución Mexicana; en agosto de 2014, después de un año y medio de estar cerrado por una remodelación, reabrió sus puertas para mostrar con más esplendor su acervo: fotografías, periódicos, ametralladoras, carabinas, pistolas, sables, indumentaria, vestuarios, billetes y documentos de la época de la batalla encabezada por Francisco Villa.

Museum “Toma de Zacatecas” (Capture of Zacatecas). The building was constructed by the founders of Zacatecas as a shelter from the indigenous people; it was named Casa Fuerte del Patrocinio (Strong House of the Patronage), it has functioned as asylum, hospice and shelter; it was renovated and inaugurated as a museum on the 24th of June, 1984, year in which the seventieth anniversary of the Capture of Zacatecas was celebrated, commemorating one of the most important events of the Mexican Revolution; in august 2014, after a year and a half of being closed to the public for renovation, it reopened its doors to showcase with even more splendor its treasures, among them photographs, newspapers, machine guns, rifles, pistols, sabers, wardrobes, notes and documents from the period of the battle lead by Francisco Villa.

Este centro recreativo fue inaugurado en el año 2005 para ofrecer un espacio interactivo de aprendizaje no formal y entretenimiento para todo público, especialmente para niños y adolescentes. El Zig–Zag fomenta el conocimiento científico a través de contenidos fáciles y divertidos; tiene varias salas de exhibición en las que se aprende sobre diferentes temas relacionados con la vida cotidiana; entre ellas se encuentran Agua aire (donde se explica el principio de la física de fluidos), Polos y cargas (en la que se exhibe el generador Bandergraf, que conduce electricidad haciendo que los cabellos se te pongan de punta), Más–Menos (que se enfoca a explicar las ciencias matemáticas), Viene–va (dedicada al estudio de la óptica) y la sala Zacatecas (donde se explica la historia de nuestro Estado a través de la astronomía y la ciencia).

Interactive Science Center Zig–Zag (science and technology).

This recreation center was inaugurated in 2005 as a means of offering an interactive space for non–formal learning and entertainment for all age groups, especially children and teenagers. The Zig–Zag promotes scientific knowledge through easy and fun content; is has various showrooms where you can learn about different topics related to everyday life; among them the showrooms Water–Air (where the principals of fluid physics is explained), Poles and Charges (where a Bandergraf generator is displayed, which conducts electricity in a way that makes the hair of anyone that touches it stand on ends), More–Less ( which focuses on explaining mathematical science), Comes–goes (it focused on the study of optics) and the Zacatecas showroom (which explains the history of our State through astronomy and science).

Museo de sitio “La Quemada” (Villanueva) Gracias al Gobierno del Estado de Zacatecas, la Secretaría de Turismo y el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, este museo abrió sus puertas en 1995 para resguardar y exhibir la arqueología regional de las culturas del norte de Mesoamérica del periodo Clásico. En el primer cuadro del recinto está la sala introductoria, donde se presenta un video que permite un acercamiento visual a las culturas de las Lomas San Gabriel, Chalchihuites y de Malpaso; en otra de las salas se muestran dibujos y planos topográficos de este recinto y de varios sitios arqueológicos de la entidad; hay además un acervo de cerámica y herramientas líticas que corresponden a las tres culturas y la reproducción a escala de una sección del llamado Templo de los Cráneos de Altavista, Chalchihuites. Si eres de los que disfrutan realizar actividades tradicionales, aquí podrás tomar algunos talleres como alfarería y cestería.

Archeological Site Museum “La Quemada” (Villanueva).

Thanks to the State government of Zacatecas, the Ministry of Tourism (Secretaría de Turismo) and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia), this museum opened its doors in 1995 to protect and showcase the regional archeology of the northern cultures of Mesoamerica from the Classic Period.

In the first level of precinct there is an introductory showroom, where a video, that allows for a visual approach to the cultures of the Lomas San Gabriel, Chalchihuites and Malpaso, is shown; other showrooms display drawings and topographical plans of this site as well as from some other archeological sites of the region; in addition to this it holds a collection of pottery and stone tools which correspond to these three cultures, as well as a scaled reproduction of a section from Altavista’s Temple of Skulls. If you enjoy partaking in traditional activities, here you will be able to participate in some workshops, including pottery and basketry.

Museo interactivo Casa Ramón López Velarde (Jerez) Ubicado en uno de los municipios más ricos de historia y cultura del Estado, este recinto se construyó en una casa sencilla de principios del siglo XIX de Jerez en la cual el poeta zacatecano Ramón López Velarde vivió los primeros años de su vida. Tiempo después, la casa se convirtió en un centro de atracción para los turistas, por lo que el dueño decidió venderla al municipio para crear el museo. Se inauguró en 1951, durante el trigésimo aniversario del fallecimiento del célebre jerezano. En el lugar hay escritos originales del poeta y fotografías de su familia. El museo ha tenido varias transformaciones, el 14 de junio de 2009 se reabrió al público con un aspecto totalmente distinto, con tecnologías museográficas como la interactividad, los sensores que narran poemas y el mobiliario adecuado para cada una de sus habitaciones.

Interactive Museum Casa Ramón López Velarde (Jerez). Located in one of the most historical and culturally rich towns in the State, the building housing this museum used to be but a simple house in the early nineteenth century, in which the poet Ramón López Velarde lived his first years of life.

Sometime later the house became an attraction center for tourists, reason why the owner decided to sell it to the local government converting it into a museum. The museum opened its doors in 1951, during the thirtieth death anniversary of the Jerez born poet. It houses his original writings and family photographs and has undergone various transformations; the 14th of June, 2009 it was reopened to the public with a completely different look, including an addition of several museological technologies such as interactivity, sensor which narrate poems when activated and adequate furnishings for each one of its rooms.

Museo de la Charrería (Jerez) Este museo se abrió al público en agosto de 2011 para ofrecer la experiencia de adentrarse en el mundo del deporte nacional: su historia en la región, sus personajes destacados, sus orígenes y evolución, los personajes históricos que la practicaron y la promovieron, las suertes, las vestimentas y los distintos accesorios que usan para realizarla. Nada mejor para alojar ese acervo que esta antigua casa jerezana llena de historia y anécdotas.

Charrería Museum (Jerez). This museum was opened to the public in august of 2011 as a means of experiencing the world of this National Sport: its history throughout the region, its prominent figures, its origins and evolution, the historical figures who practiced and promoted it, the maneuvers (known as suertes or luck), the attires and equipment used during its practice. There is no better place to hold the history of this National Heritage than the house it is held in which is brimming with the history and anecdotes of the people of Jerez.

Museo municipal Villa de Llerena (Sombrerete) Ubicado en los portales de una antigua casona del siglo XVIII, este singular museo, perteneciente a uno de los Pueblos Mágicos del Estado, está integrado por donaciones de varias personas: desde cámaras y radios antiguos hasta una butaca de cine y una peculiar máquina reparadora de botas; también cuenta con piezas y referencias arqueológicas, testimonios artísticos, instrumentos para la minería, rocas con minerales, infinidad de fotografías antiguas, muebles y documentos históricos.

Municipal Museum of Villa de Llerena (Sombrerete). Located at the gates of an old eighteenth century mansion, this unique museum, belonging to one of the States Magical Villages, is composed of donations made by several people: from antique cameras and radios to old cinema seats and a peculiar boot repairing machine; it also features archeological pieces and references, artistic testimonies, tools for mining, mineral rocks, and a large number of old photographs, furniture and historic documents.

Museo parroquial y capilla de los Mártires (Teúl de González Ortega) Teúl de González Ortega es Pueblo Mágico desde 2011; es un lugar con mucha tradición religiosa, ya que se localiza en la zona donde se desarrollara, en la década de los veinte, el conflicto religioso conocido como la Guerra Cristera. En la capilla adosada al templo parroquial se encuentra una urna con los restos de dos mártires oriundos y el corazón de uno de ellos (San Agustín Caloca) para su veneración. Este museo se encuentra en la adjunta casa curial; en él se exhiben objetos arqueológicos, cotidianos, litúrgicos y pertenencias de los mártires, custodiados por el gran valor histórico y cultural.

Parish Museum and Chapel of the Martyrs (Teúl de González Ortega). Teúl de Gonzales Ortega has been a Magical Village since 2011; it is a place with great religious tradition since it is located in the place where, in the 1920’s, the religious conflict known as the Cristero War took place. In the chapel adjoining the parish there is an urn which holds the ashes of two native martyrs and the heart of one of them (Saint Agustín Caloca) for veneration. The museum can be found in the neighboring Curia House, where archeological, liturgical and everyday objects belonging to the martyrs are guarded and exhibited due to their great historic and cultural value.

Ágora José González Echeverría (Fresnillo) Fue construido para albergar a la Escuela Práctica de Minas (dependiente de la Escuela Nacional de Minas de la capital del país), que estuvo activa durante tres años; tiempo después, se convirtió en sede de un cuartel militar, coso para corridas de toros, escenario para representaciones teatrales, hospicio, biblioteca, salas de exposiciones, casa de cultura, universidad y, finalmente, museo. Este lugar destaca por sus amplios salones, corredores y patios, en los cuales sobresalen obras de Manuel M. Ponce, Francisco Goitia, Tomás Méndez, Daniel Peralta, Beto Díaz, Mateo Gallegos y Pedro Valtierra; también aloja el Museo de Minería “Napoleón Gómez Sada”, en donde se exhiben instrumentos, herramientas, maquinaria, fotografías, planos y aparatos médicos que dan testimonio del trabajo realizado por varias generaciones de mineros.

Agora of José González Echeverría (Fresnillo). It was built to house the School of Mines (a branch of the National School of Mines in the country’s capital), it was only active for three year after which it served several purposes as military barracks, a bullfighting arena, a stage for theatrical performances, a hospice, a library, an exhibition hall, a cultural center, a university and, finally, as a museum. This place stands out because of its spacious rooms, hallways and courtyards, in which works by Manuel M. Ponce, Francisco Goitia, Tomás Méndez, Daniel Peralta, Beto Díaz, Mateo Gallegos and Pedro Valtierra are displayed. It also houses the Mining Museum “Napoléon Gómez Sada”, a space that exhibits instruments, tools, machinery, photography, plans and medical devices which are a testimony to the work accomplished by generations of miners.

Este pequeño pero acogedor recinto es una de las joyas del Pueblo Mágico de Pinos, pues guarda destacadas obras de arte sacro de los siglos XVII y XVIII. El patrimonio artístico de este museo ha sido heredado a las actuales generaciones por los antiguos moradores del Real de Pinos, fundado en los linderos del Camino Real de tierra Adentro (designado, en 2010 Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la Unesco). Entre las valiosas piezas resguardadas destaca un Cristo de madera del siglo XVI con cabello natural y huesos incrustados en las costillas; asimismo, las obras pictóricas de Gabriel Ovalle, Pablo Joseph Franco, Francisco Martínez y el notable artista novohispano Miguel Cabrera; además hay preciosas muestras de objetos sagrados de los siglos XVII y XVIII: vasos, copones, patenas y custodias fabricadas en plata repujada y bañadas en oro.

Museum of Sacred Art (Pinos). This small but cozy museum is one of the gems of the Magical Village Pinos; it houses remarkable works of Sacred Art from the sixteenth and eighteenth century. The artistic heritage of this museum has been passed on to the present generations by the old inhabitants of Real de Pinos, founded on the edge of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (appointed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2010). Among the most valuable pieces sheltered in this museum there is a wooden Christ from the sixteenth century, what makes it remarkable is its natural human hair and the real bones embedded in its ribs; along with the paintings by Gabriel Ovalle, Pablo Joseph Franco, Francisco Martínez and the notable Miguel Cabrera; in addition to a collection of sacred objects from the seventeenth and eighteenth century: cups, goblets, patens and monstrances made from embossed silver and plated in gold.

Desde ahí podrás subir al teleférico para cruzar la ciudad por el aire y disfrutar de una espectacular vista de la ciudad de cantera entre maravillosos cerros.

Arqueología y magia de provincia (alrededores de la ciudad) Desayunar temprano y portar ropa cómoda es una de las reglas que deberás seguir durante el día que elijas para este recorrido, pues tu primera visita será la zona arqueológica de La Quemada, ubicada a treinta y cinco minutos de la ciudad, por la salida hacia Jerez. Se dice que en este lugar estuvo asentada la mítica Chicomostoc (lugar de las siete cuevas).

Es un monumental conjunto arqueológico conformado por grandes construcciones situadas en lo alto de un cerro. Este sitio es de fácil y rápido acceso y cuenta con un museo en el que podrás conocer detalles de las culturas que ahí se asentaron.

Después de La Quemada, debes visitar Jerez, pero durante el camino deberás hacer una pausa para llegar a probar las deliciosas tortas de Malpaso, localizadas en medio de la ruta y que tienen ya una gran tradición con los turistas y los zacatecanos.

Llegando a Jerez podrás disfrutar de esa magia provinciana tan evocada por el poeta Ramón López Velarde; antes de iniciar el recorrido prueba las deliciosas tostadas y las raspanieves; después pasea por la plaza principal, donde suena durante gran parte del día la tradicional música de tamborazo.

De aquí es imprescindible conocer sus templos, el teatro Hinojosa, el edificio de La Torre y la casa–museo Ramón López Velarde. Visitar el mercado popular es maravilloso. Si te queda tiempo, te recomendamos pasar por el panteón de Dolores, donde podrás apreciar el arte funerario de los mausoleos.

De regreso en Zacatecas, puedes salir a disfrutar la noche algún restaurante o bar y disfrutar el excelente ambiente que tiene para ti esta ciudad colonial.

Archeology and the magic of province (Around the city).

An early breakfast and comfortable clothes are things to take into account on the day that you decide to take this tour, since the first visit will be to the archeological site La Quemada, located thirty five minutes outside Zacatecas, towards the Jerez exit. It is said that this places was the settlement of the mythical Chicomostoc (place of the seven caves). It is a monumental archeological complex made up of large constructions situated atop a hill. PUEBLOS MÁGICOS DE ZACATECAS En todo México hay repartidos distintos Pueblos Mágicos; las características básicas que comparten estos lugares encantadores son calles y plazas pintorescas, construcciones peculiares y, en muchas ocasiones, costumbres locales muy arraigadas y diferenciadas.

El nombramiento de un Pueblo Mágico implica siempre un compromiso de la comunidad que lo habita de convertirse en un excelente anfitrión del turismo que lo visitará; este compromiso trae consigo la recompensa de ver beneficiada su economía y, sobre todo, su cultura.

Zacatecas tiene el privilegio de contar con cinco bellos lugares reconocidos con el nombramiento de Pueblo Mágico, que les fue asignado gracias a las características particulares de cada uno de ellos: su alto valor histórico, religioso y cultural, así como por su importancia en la tradición nacional. Vale la pena conocer algunos detalles acerca de ellos.

All through Mexico there is a scattering of Magical villages; the basic characteristics shared by these charming places are picturesque streets and town squares, peculiar constructions and, on occasions, varying and deeply rooted local customs.

The appointment of a Magical village always involves a compromise taken on by its inhabitants of becoming an excellent host to the tourism which it will receive; this compromise will help benefit the town not only economically but also culturally.

Zacatecas has the privilege of having five beautiful places recognized with the Magical village tittle, earned thanks to the particular characteristics of each one: their high historical, religious and cultural value as well as their importance in national tradition. It pays to know some details about each one.

Jerez de García Salinas Fue la primera de la entidad zacatecana en recibir el reconocimiento de Pueblo Mágico (2007). Esta bella población, ubicada a solo cuarenta y cinco minutos de la ciudad capital, tiene una gran riqueza histórica y cultural; data de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI; es conocida por ser muy alegre y tener una gran actividad económica. Además de su bella arquitectura, y de ser el lugar de origen del afamado tamborazo zacatecano, tiene el privilegio de ser la cuna del célebre poeta Ramón López Velarde, a quien se rinde un emotivo homenaje en una atractiva casa–museo. La imagen de Jerez es una auténtica postal de la provincia mexicana. Si visitas Jerez, no puedes perderte la visita al panteón de Dolores ni las tradicionales tostadas.

It was the first entity in Zacatecas to receive the tittle of Magical village (2007). This delightful town, located forty five minutes away from the capital, holds great historical and cultural wealth, dating back to the second half of the sixteenth century; it is well known for its cheerful atmosphere and great economic activity. In addition to its beautiful architecture and being the place of origin of the famed tamborazo or drum–beat from Zacatecas, it holds the privilege of being the birth place of famous poet Ramón López Velarde, for whom a touching tribute was made in an attractive house–museum in town. Jerez is an authentic postcard image of the Mexican province. A few musts when visiting Jerez include a visit to the pantheon of Dolores and tasting their traditional tostadas.

Days of Candelario Huízar: it takes place on the first week of February to commemorate the merits of the virtuoso Jerez born musician. An acknowledgment is given to the work of composers, performers, teachers, researchers and cultural promoters of Zacatecas.

Jerezada: se lleva a cabo durante el fin de semana del Carnaval por las calles del centro de la población, con las modalidades nocturna, infantil y oficial, para promover la imagen de esta bella y alegre localidad.

Jerezada: This event takes place during Carnival weekend through the downtown streets, with various versions such as nocturnal, children only and an official one, all of which promote the image of this gorgeous and cheerful town.

Feria de la Primavera: se celebra durante la Semana de Pascua; inicia el Sábado de Gloria con una cabalgata multitudinaria y muchas bandas musicales. Durante esta celebración hay actividades culturales y populares para agasajar a los propios y a los cientos de visitantes que acuden a divertirse.

Spring Fair: It is celebrated during Easter week; beginning on Holy Saturday with a massive horse parade and many musical bands. During this celebration cultural and popular activities are held for the enjoyment of the locals as well as the many visitors who turn up to have a good time.

Festival de la Tostada: se hace durante la primera semana de agosto; en este evento se reúnen en un solo sitio los vendedores de las famosas tostadas jerezanas para promocionar este antojito; también hay un programa cultural.

Tostada festival: Held during the first week of August, in this event many vendors of the famous tostadas of Jerez come together in one place to promote the delicious snack; a cultural program is also organized each year for this occasion.

Fiestas de la Virgen de la Soledad: se celebran del 7 al 15 de septiembre para venerar a la patrona regional con peregrinaciones, danzas, eventos culturales y fuegos pirotécnicos.

Festivities of Our lady of Solitude: they take place from the 7th to the 15th of September to venerate the regional patron with pilgrimages, dances, cultural events and firework displays.

Teúl de González Ortega Regionalmente conocido como el Teúl, este lugar se localiza a 240 kilómetros al suroeste de la capital. Desde sus orígenes, el Teúl fue parte importante en esa región, ya que era punto clave para las culturas precolombinas que habitaban esa zona; durante el movimiento de la Guerra Cristera, desarrollada en el primer tercio del siglo XX, también fue punto activo; de entonces tenemos dos santos mártires de gran veneración: San Agustín Caloca y San José Isabel Flores. Este pueblo conserva costumbres y tradiciones con características muy particulares. Sus plazas y templos así como su zona arqueológica forman parte de la magia que lo envuelve; otro de sus orgullos es un patrimonio intangible: el delicioso mezcal.

Regionally known simply as the Teúl, this place is located 240 kilometers south west from the capital. Since its beginnings, the Teúl has been an important part of this region, it being a key point for the pre–Columbine cultures which inhabited the area; amid the Cristero war, which took place during the early twentieth century, it also played an active role, from this point in time the town has two greatly venerated martyrs: Saint Agustín Caloca and Saint José Isabel Flores. This town preserves customs and traditions with very particular characteristics, and from its town squares and temples to its archeological site there is a certain magic which envelops the town. Another one of its prides comes from an intangible heritage: the delicious mezcal.

Aniversario de los Santos Mártires: se festeja del 23 al 25 de mayo para conmemorar el aniversario de San Agustín Caloca y San José Isabel Flores.

Fiesta de la fundación de Teúl: del 16 al 24 de junio se celebra el aniversario de la fundación del Teúl (1536) y su santo patrón San Juan Bautista.

Festivities of the Founding of Teúl: From the 16th to the 24th of June the anniversary of the founding of Teúl is celebrated as well as its patron saint Juan Bautista.

Día del Hijo Ausente: el primer sábado de agosto se festeja a los hijos ausentes (emigrados a Estados Unidos principalmente); esta fiesta inicia con una gran callejoneada.

Day of the absent son: the first Saturday of August the absent sons are celebrated (mainly those who immigrated to the United States); this party begins with a great callejoneada (walking serenade).

Feria de la Música y el Mezcal: Se celebra del 14 al 23 de noviembre con eventos culturales y deportivos, exposiciones comerciales, gastronómicas y artesanales; todas se acompañan con música y el exquisito mezcal regional.

Music and Mezcal Fair: It takes place from the 14th to the 23rd of November hosting cultural and sporting events, shopping, food and craft exhibitions, all of this accompanied with music and the exquisite regional mezcal.

Sombrerete La primitiva villa de San Juan Bautista de Llerena y Real y Minas de Sombrerete se localiza a 170 kilómetros al norte de la ciudad de Zacatecas.

Fue fundada hacia 1555 y debe su nombre al cercano y dominante cerro del Sombreretillo, que fue llamado así por su singular forma de sombrero tricornio de la época. Asentado sobre importantes yacimientos minerales, este mágico lugar muestra su bonanza en los evidentes monumentos religiosos, cuyas torres y cúpulas dominan el panorama; esto hizo Zacatecas · 31

posible que fuera incluido en el listado de Pueblos Mágicos de México; también, como parte del Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, es lugar patrimonio mundial. Debes conocer la Sierra de Órganos, localizada 25 kilómetros al norte, que ofrece un impresionante espectáculo a los sentidos.

The primitive villa of San Juan Bautista de Llerena and Real y Minas of Sombrerete is located 170 kilometers north of the Zacatecas capital. It was founded in 1555 and owes its name to the dominating hill Sombreretillo near to it, name given to it due to its peculiar shape which resembles a tricorne hat. Nestled over important mineral deposits, this magical place showcases its prosperity through religious monuments, whose towers and domes dominate the landscape; this allowed it the possibility of being listed as one of Mexico’s Magical villages; it is also, as part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a world heritage site. The Sierra de Órganos is a must see when visiting this area, located 25 kilometers north it offers an impressive spectacle for the senses.

Fiesta de la Fundación de Sombrerete: se realiza la semana del 6 de junio con actividades culturales y deportivas y actos litúrgicos.

Fiestas de la Noria de San Pantaleón: se realizan el 27 de julio en honor al santo patrón del lugar.

Localizada al sur del Estado, a 220 kilómetros de la ciudad de Zacatecas, esta población, cuyo nombre significa lugar de tunas, es un sitio de gran tradición histórica: en 1532, se funda ahí la primera Guadalajara; en 1539, Pedro de Alvarado, el gran Tonatiuh, sufriera ahí el accidente que días después provocaría su muerte; en ese lugar Daniel Camarena, en octubre de 1810, dio un segundo grito de independencia. Nochistlán cuenta con hermosas edificaciones de tipo civil y religioso y con emblemáticos monumentos conmemorativos, además, con reconocidos grupos de mariachis y los llamados “jaraberos”, de los que, según se dice, proviene el reconocido y mencionado mariachi. Si lo visitas, debes darte una escapada por los alrededores de esta población, pues el paisaje ofrece increíbles escenarios naturales.

Located to the south of the state, 220 kilometers away from Zacatecas city, this town, whose name means “place of prickly pears”, is a place of great historical tradition: in 1532 the first Guadalajara was founded in this place; in 1539, Pedro de Alvarado, the great Tonatiuh, will suffer here the accident which days later will be the cause of his death; it was also in this town where Daniel Camarena, in October 1810, gave the second cry of independence. Nochistlán is home to beautiful civil and religious style buildings and emblematic commemorative monuments, as well as renowned mariachi groups and the so– called “jaraberos”, from which, it is said, originates the afore mentioned mariachi. When visiting you should take a trip through the towns surrounding areas, for its landscape offers incredible natural scenery.

Pinos El también real de minas de Pinos se ubica al oriente del Estado, a 125 kilómetros de la capital; fue fundado a finales del siglo XVI a partir del descubrimiento de yacimientos argentíferos; a partir de entonces tuvo un importante desarrollo al establecerse numerosas haciendas de beneficio y otras mezcaleras. Aunque Pinos surge en medio de áridos paisajes, su importante producción mineral permitió que al poco tiempo fuera parte importante del prolongado y transitado Camino Real de Tierra Adentro; por lo tanto, cuando esta vía fue declarada Patrimonio Mundial (2010), Pinos quedó inscrito en dicha designación. Su plácido y provincial centro está conformado por singulares calles, plazuelas y jardines, así como por magníficas muestras de arquitectura civil y religiosa.

Also considered part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, it is located to the east of the state, 125 kilometers away from the capital; it was founded in the late sixteenth century after the discovery of silver deposits on the site, from then on it went through an important development, establishing numerous benefit haciendas and other mezcal plants. Even though Pinos rises amid arid landscapes, its important mineral production allowed it to become, in a short amount of time, a significant part of the lengthy and transited Camino Real de Tierra Adentro; when this road was declared a part of World Heritage (2010), Pinos too entered said designation. Its tranquil and provincial town center consists of singular streets, small squares and gardens, as well as magnificent examples of civil and religious architecture.

Peregrinación de la Virgen de Toyahua: se realiza el primer sábado de octubre; participa gran parte de población local

Principales festivales y eventos de Zacatecas 2015

Junio

Febrero–marzo February–march Jerezada Del 12 al 15 de febrero de 2015 (fecha movible al domingo de Carnaval). Esta tradición iniciada en el año 2000 tiene como escenario el primer cuadro de Jerez. Con el fin de preservar los monumentos y sus admiradas fachadas, durante algunos años (de 2009 a 2013), se trasladó a los entornos de la plaza de toros. Fue hasta 2014 que retomó las calles de la población para realzar más aún la imagen de esta bella y alegre localidad, la cual, en el año 2007, fue distinguida con el nombramiento de Pueblo Mágico.

Jerezada. From February 12 to 15, 2015. (Date may vary to coincide with Carnival Sunday). This tradition, started in 2000, had as its stage the city center of Jerez, but in order to preserve the monuments and admirable facades for some years now ( from 2009 to 2013), the event was transferred to the area surrounding the Plaza de Toros (Bullfighting arena). In was in 2014 that the event once again overtook the city’s main streets as a way of further enhancing the image of this beautiful and cheerful town, which in 2007 was honored with the appointed of Magical Village.

Marzo–abril March–april Festival Cultural Zacatecas Del 27 de marzo al 10 de abril de 2015 (fecha movible a Semana Santa y de Pascua). Este festival comenzó en 1987; con el transcurrir de los años se ha convertido uno de los más importantes del país. Han sido muchos y afamados los artistas que han conformado la cartelera contempla todas las artes.

Aunque cada edición sobresale por la programación de esperadas figuras de trayectoria y renombre internacional, son también tradicionales del evento las presentaciones de libro, conferencias, conciertos de Jazz, ciclos de guitarra clásica, música de cámara, ópera y los de la Banda de Música del Estado. En esta temporada las galerías lucen magníficas exposiciones con obra de reconocidos artistas plásticos y visuales.

Paralelas a estas actividades, los zacatecanos realizan las de carácter religioso: representaciones de vía crucis, actos litúrgicos y procesiones, como la del Silencio, que se lleva a cabo con gran solemnidad por las calles del centro de la ciudad.

Cultural Festival of Zacatecas. From March 27 to April 10, 2015 (Date may vary to take into account Holy and Easter Week). This festival saw its beginnings in 1987 and throughout the years it has become one of the most important fes34 · Zacatecas

tivals in the country. The billboard for this event has seen many famous artists from many artistic fields. Although each edition stands out for its program full of respected figures of international reputation, there are many other activities traditional to this event: book launches, conferences, concerts of various types of music such as jazz, classic guitar, chamber music, opera and performances by the Symphonic Band of the State of Zacatecas. During this time of the year the art galleries hold splendid exhibitions of works by famous artists. Parallel to the cultural aspect of this event religious activities pertaining to Holy Week and Easter also take place, the way of the cross, liturgies, and processions such as the Procession of Silence, which is performed with great solemnity through the city’s main streets.

Feria de Primavera de Jerez Del 4 al 13 de abril de 2015 (fecha movible al Sábado de Gloria). Esta festividad es una de las más antiguas y tradicionales de Zacatecas; también una de las más atractivas. Da inicio el Sábado de Gloria con la esperada “quema de judas”; en ella se reúnen miles de jinetes de toda la región y varias partes de la república, haciendo gala de sus más lucidos trajes, monturas y caballos. El evento, que es amenizado por infinidad de bandas de música que tocan simultáneamente, es solo el inicio una gran fiesta que se prolongará durante una semana como un atractivo más de este bello Pueblo Mágico.

Spring Festival of Jerez. From April 4 to 13, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with Holy Saturday). This celebration is one of the oldest and most traditional of Zacatecas; also one of the most popular. It begins on Holy Saturday with the awaited “quema de Judas” (burning of Judas); on this day thousands of horse riders, from different parts of the state and even the country, gather to display their most extravagant riding garbs, saddles and horses. The event, which is enlivened by countless musical bands all playing simultaneously, is only the beginning of a great celebration that lasts a week, adding one more lively attraction to this beautiful Magical Village.

June Feria del Libro Zacatecas y Jornadas Lopezvelardeanas Del 13 al 20 de junio de 2015 (fecha movible a la tercera semana de junio). Durante este evento académico y poético se hace entrega de los premios Iberoamericano de Poesía “Ramón López Velarde”, al Mérito Literario Zacatecas y al Mérito Editorial Zacatecas; en este programa se promueve ante las nuevas generaciones la obra del poeta mayor de Zacatecas, a través de encuentros literarios a los que acuden especialistas, creadores, críticos y lectores, propiciando espacios de diálogo, reflexión y difusión en torno del arte de escribir poesía. Durante esta fiesta se conmemoran el natalicio y la muerte del bardo jerezano, que son el 15 y el 19 de junio respectivamente.

Books Fair of Zacatecas and Lopezvelardean Conferences.

From June 13 to 20 (Date may vary to coincide with the third week of June). During this academic and poetic event the Iberoamerican Poetry awards “Ramón López Velarde” are granted for the Literary Merit of Zacatecas and the Editorial Merit of Zacatecas; this program helps in promoting the works of Zacatecas’ greatest poet towards new generations, this is done through literary events attended by specialists, artists, critics and readers, offering opportunities for discussion, reflection and diffusion about the art of writing poetry. During this celebration the birth and death of this bard of Jerez is commemorated, on the 15th and 19th of June respectably.

Cabalgata Turística “Toma de Zacatecas” Del 21 al 23 de junio de 2015 (fecha movible). Esta caminata ecuestre tiene una década de tradición; regularmente se lleva a cabo los días 21 y 22 de junio siguiendo la ruta que el ejército de la División del Norte, encabezado por Francisco Villa, trazó en el plan de ataque para llevar a cabo la histórica Toma de Zacatecas el 23 de junio de 1914. Esta cabalgata parte de las cabeceras municipales de Calera y Morelos para entrar a la ciudad de Zacatecas con un desfile que concluye en el histórico cerro de La Bufa.

Touristic Cavalcade “Toma de Zacatecas” (The Capture of Zacatecas). From the 21 to 23 of June (Date may vary). This equestrian parade carries a decade of tradition, generally taking place on the 21st and 22nd of June according to the routine established by the army’s North Brigade, headed by Francisco Villa, outlined in the plan of attack to carry out the historical Capture of Zacatecas on the 23rd of June in 1914. This cavalcade sets off from the towns of Calera and Morelos and enters the city with a parade that ends in the historic Cerro de la Bufa (The Bufa Hill).

Julio July Festival Zacatecas del Folclor Internacional Del 26 de julio al 2 de agosto de 2015 (fecha movible al último domingo del mes). Esta fiesta cultural internacional con duración de una semana, durante la cual, la ciudad capital de Zacatecas y muchos de sus municipios, viven un múltiple colorido de las expresiones culturales de varias ciudades y países que, desde 1996, acuden a esta reunión de convivencia para mostrar en un espectáculo de alegría incomparable lo más representativo de sus tradiciones. Aunque cada una de las delegaciones son un original y admirable espectáculo, en los desfiles de inauguración y clausura se vuelca toda algarabía.

International Folklore Festival of Zacatecas. From July 26 to August 2, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the last Sunday of July). This celebration of international culture lasts a week, during which the capital city of Zacatecas and many of its neighboring towns enjoy the varying encounters with the cultural expressions from diverse cities and countries, many of which have attended this reunion since 1996, presenting us with the most representative aspects of their culture through a spectacle of incomparable joy. Each delegation presents an original and admirable spectacle on its own, but when they all come together for the opening and closing parades the city brims with festive voices.

Agosto August Festival Internacional de Jazz & Blues Zacatecas Del 13 al 29 de agosto de 2015 (fecha movible de jueves a domingo de la segunda quincena del mes). Durante esta temporada, el jazz es huésped distinguido del Museo de Arte Abstracto “Manuel Felguérez”, que sirve de foro para el talento nacional y extranjero, no solo para apreciar este intenso género de música moderna, sino también para llevar a cabo diversas actividades que le son afines y tienen que ver con la conservación de este inestimable legado: el cine, la literatura y la pintura.

International Jazz & Blues Festival of Zacatecas. From August 13 to 29, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the Thursday through Sunday of the second fortnight of the month). During this event, jazz is a distinguished guest of the Museum of Abstract Art (Museo de Arte Abstracto) “Manuel Felguérez”, which serves as the stage for national and foreign talent, not only as a means to appreciate this intense genre of modern music, but also as a way to participate in various activities related to the preservation of this priceless legacy through film, literature and art.

Feria Nacional de la Plata Del 13 de agosto al 2 de septiembre de 2015 (fecha movible a la segunda quincena del mes). Como coronación de un esfuerzo de promoción de las autoridades, a partir del año 2008, la Feria Regional de Fresnillo cambió su nombre y su categoría para convertirse en la Feria Nacional de la Plata; desde entonces, ha contado con eventos culturales y artísticos de nivel internacional, convirtiéndose en una de las más importantes del estado de Zacatecas.

National Silver Fair. From August 13 to September 2, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the second fortnight of the month) As a reward for the promoting efforts made by the local authorities, in 2008 the Regional Fair of Fresnillo changed its name and category into the National Silver Fair, since then the event has enjoyed cultural and artistic events of an international renown, becoming one of the most important celebrations in the state of Zacatecas Morisma de Bracho Del 27 al 30 de agosto de 2015 (fecha movible al último viernes sábado y domingo del mes). Considerada como una de las tradiciones más arraigadas en Zacatecas, esta festividad es una gran representación teatral en la que participan más de diez mil personas, lo que la convierte en una de las más monumentales de México. El espectáculo emula batallas entre moros y cristianos en las lomas de Bracho, al norte de la ciudad. De los tres días, es el domingo el más espectacular, pues es cuando se lleva a cabo un gran desfile por las principales calles del centro de la ciudad, luego hay combates y una última cruzada en la cual ganan los cristianos primeros y decapitan al rey moro.

Morisma de Bracho. From the August 27 to 30, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the last Friday, Saturday and Sunday of August). Considered one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Zacatecas, this event is a great theatrical performance involving more than ten thousand people, which makes it one of the most monumental performances in 36 · Zacatecas

Lady of Patronage. It is a two week long event of civic and religious celebrations, on one hand the anniversary of the founding of Zacatecas (1546) and in the other the festivities of Our Lady of Patronage protector of Zacatecas. Although the National Fair arises under the shelter of these festivities, its importance significantly transcends, reaching a position as one of the most important in the country.

Mexico. The spectacle reenacts the battle between Moors and Christians in the hills of Bracho, north of the city. Of the three festive days Sunday is the most spectacular, as it is the day when a great parade is held through the streets of the city, after which the great battle is reenacted in which the first Christians come out victorious with the beheading of the moor king.

Septiembre September Feria Nacional de Zacatecas Del 3 al 21 de septiembre de 2015 (fecha movible a la segunda y tercera semanas de septiembre). Esta celebración tiene un antiguo origen que data desde finales del s. xvi, cuando el cabildo de entones acordó que el día 8 de septiembre de todos los años, los vecinos de la población festejasen a la virgen con diversas actividades, como su respectiva patrona que era. Desde entonces, estas fiestas se llevaron a cabo en el centro de la ciudad y no cambiaron sino hasta en 1975, cuando se construyen unas instalaciones apropiadas en las proximidades de la ciudad. En tanto que las actividades religiosas se siguieron celebrando en la capilla de la Bufa en honor de la Virgen del Patrocinio. Son dos semanas de festejos cívicos y religiosos, ya que, por una parte, se conmemora el aniversario de la fundación de la ciudad (1546) y, por otra, las fiestas de las vírgenes de Nuestra Señora de los Zacatecas y del Patrocinio. Aunque la feria nacional surge al cobijo de las fiestas patronales, su importancia trascendió significativamente, llegando a posicionarse como una de las mejores de México.

National Fair of Zacatecas. From September 3 to 21, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the second and third week of September). The origins of this celebration date back to the late sixteenth century, when the then council resolved that every 8th of September, the town’s inhabitants would celebrate Our Lady of Patronage (Virgen del Patrocinio) with various activities. Since then this celebration took place in the city center and stayed that way until 1975, when suitable facilities for such a large event where built close to the city. Even so the religious aspect of the event is still celebrated in the chapel built atop the Bufa in honor of Our

October Festival Barroco del Museo de Guadalupe Del 29 de septiembre al 11 de octubre de 2015 (fecha movible a la última semana de septiembre). Iniciado en el año 2002, este festival tiene como principal objetivo difundir las expresiones artísticas y culturales que tuvo el estilo barroco en sus diversas modalidades en la sociedad novohispana; el resultado es una experiencia única, ya que ofrece la oportunidad de transitar por la cotidianidad de la época colonial de los siglos xvii y xviii al recrear facetas de ese místico mundo por medio de la música, la pintura, la gastronomía, la moda y la vida cotidiana. Este evento tiene como marco el ex Colegio de Propaganda Fide de Guadalupe (1707), hoy convertido en el extraordinario Museo de Guadalupe.

Baroque Festival of the Museum of Guadalupe. From the 29th of September to October 11th, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the last week of September). Initiated in 2002, this festival’s main objective is to promote the artistic and cultural expressions of the Baroque period in its various forms among the novo Hispanic society; resulting in a unique experience that offers the opportunity of navigating through the everyday life of the colonial period pertaining to the seventeenth and eighteenth century. This is achieved by a recreating facet of this mystical world through its music, art, cuisine, fashion and daily life. This event has as its stage the former Fide propaganda school of Guadalupe (Colegio de Propaganda Fide de Guadalupe, 1707), today transformed into the extraordinary museum of Guadalupe.

Festival Internacional de Narración Oral Del 2 al 10 de octubre de 2015 (fecha movible a la primera semana del mes). La palabra hace acto de presencia en las diferentes plazas y callejones de la ciudad zacatecana a través de oradores invitados que, desde diversas latitudes, vienen a compartir la palabra y la fantasía de la creación de mundos que nacen de un imaginario reinventado mediante las habilidades de modernos juglares.

National Storytelling Festival. From October 2 to 10, 2015 (Date may vary to the first week of the month). The spoken word makes an appearance, throughout the various squares and alleys of the city of Zacatecas, through guest storytellers who share with us the wonders of fantasy worlds forged and molded with the power of talented voices belonging to modern day minstrels.

Festival Internacional de Teatro de Calle Del 18 al 25 de octubre de 2015 (fecha movible a la tercera semana del mes). Es un espectáculo único, iniciado en el año 2002; su desarrollo comprende un programa de teatro en espacios abiertos, lo que acentúa la magnificencia arquitectónica de la ciudad. Los eventos se llevan a cabo a gran

escala, en una fusión de dramaturgia, performance, música y efectos especiales. Actualmente es uno de los festivales más queridos y con un fuerte arraigo en Zacatecas. Es un festival consolidado, con una propuesta que elimina las barreras y limitaciones que imponen los recintos cerrados, devolviendo al teatro a su instauración original: los espacios abiertos, en contacto directo con el público y el entorno.

International Street Theatre Festival. From October 19 to 25, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the third weeks of October). It is a unique event, launched in 2002; compromised of a playbill carried out in open spaces, accentuating the city’s architectural magnificence. The performances are grand scale events merged with drama, music and special effects. To this day it is one of the most beloved and quickly rooted festivals of the people of Zacatecas. It has become a consolidated festival, its proposal eliminating the barriers and limitations imposed by enclosed spaces, returning to the theater its original elements of an open space that allows indirect contact with the audience and their environment.

Noviembre November Festival Cultural de la Diversidad Del 2 al 8 de noviembre de 2015 (fecha movible a la primera semana del mes). Esta es una propuesta multidisciplinaria con una temática que intenta un acercamiento con toda la sociedad en general, no limitada al ámbito relacionado con la comunidad LGBTI (lesbianas, gay, bisexuales, personas transgénero e intersexuales). Durante este festival se llevan a cabo eventos musicales, dancísticos, teatrales, conferencias y exposiciones.

Pride Festival. From November 2 to 8, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the first week of the month). This is a multidisciplinary proposal that attempts to approach the society in general and not just the LGBTI+ community (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and intersex). This festival offers music, dance and theater events as well as conferences and exhibits.

Festival de Música Manuel M. Ponce Del 23 al 29 de noviembre de 2015 (fecha movible a la última semana del mes). Iniciado apenas el pasado 2014, este festival se origina como escenario para la entrega de la presea al mérito de este internacional músico fresnillense. Además de la programación de obras y conciertos, en la primera edición se realizó la inauguración del museo en su honor; este espacio, además de ser interactivo, contiene objetos personales y muebles del autor, dos pianos y una colección de más de cuatro mil valiosos documentos que se hallaban resguardados en el Archivo Histórico de Zacatecas.

Music Festival Manuel M. Ponce. From November 23 to 29, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the last week of the month). This festival originated only last year (2014), created as a stage for awarding the Medal for Merit in honor of the Fresnillo born international musician Manuel M. Ponce.

Aside from the programing of plays and concerts the first edition of this event saw the opening of the museum made in his honor; which apart from being interactive houses personal objects and furniture belonging to the musician, two pianos and a collection of more than four thousand valuable documents found in the Historical Archives of Zacatecas.

Diciembre December Festival Internacional de Poesía y Premio Nacional Ramón López Velarde Del 30 de noviembre al 8 de diciembre de 2015 (fecha movible a la primera semana del mes).Festival iniciado en 1982 con el nombre de Festival de Poesía “Praxis–Dosfilos”, en 1988, con motivo del centenario del nacimiento del poeta, el evento cambió de nombre al del bardo hasta el año 2007, en que se eleva al rango de Festival Internacional de Poesía; desde entonces se honra la obra de los más notables poetas en lengua española y extranjera. Este festival propicia un estimulante encuentro de poetas, críticos, editores, animadores culturales y, por supuesto, de habituales y potenciales lectores de poesía.

International Poetry Festival and National Award Ramón López Velarde. From November 30 to December 8, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the first week of December) This festival originated in 1982 with the name Poetry Festival “Praxis–Dosfilos”; in 1988 to mark the centenary of the poets birth the festival changed its name to Ramón López Velarde, staying the same until 2007, when it rises to the rank of International Poetry Festival; honoring the works of notable poets of Spanish and foreign languages. This festival fosters a stimulating gathering of poets, critics, editors, cultural animator and, of course, established and potential poetry readers.

Festival Estatal de Navidad Del 23 al 29 de diciembre de 2015 (fecha movible a la tercera semana del mes). A cinco años de su inicio, este festival se está convirtiendo en una tradición cultural en la entidad y un atractivo turístico para quienes visitan Zacatecas en esta temporada. En las actividades programadas para este evento participan artistas zacatecanos, se llevan a cabo pastorelas, concursos de villancicos y coros, así como de nacimientos, con los cuales se busca conservar las tradiciones e incentivar la artesanía zacatecana.

State Christmas Festival. From December 23 to 29, 2015 (Date may vary to coincide with the third week of the month). Five years after its inception, this festival has become a cultural tradition in the state and a touristic attraction for those visiting Zacatecas during this season. Among the programmed activities for this event Zacatecas artists participate by preforming pastorelas (nativities), choir, caroling and Nativity Scene competitions, all in the spirit of preserving traditions and encouraging local craftsmanship.

Déjate encantar por Villanueva Si eres de espíritu aventurero, aléjate del bullicio de la ciudad para visitar Villanueva, municipio ubicado a cincuenta y seis kilómetros de la capital que te ofrece las más bellas estampas de ese México que se aferra a sus tradiciones y conmina a sus visitantes a un viaje casi místico y vertiginoso que va desde su zona arqueológica prehispánica hasta los sitios sagrados que, como la iglesia de San Judas Tadeo, dan muestra del sincretismo cultural de un pueblo.

el mezcal, Regalo de los dioses Se dice que la bebida de los dioses es regalada a los hombres en forma de mezcal. Desde tiempos ancestrales, los zacatecanos nos sentimos orgullosos de esta bebida espirituosa hecha a partir de la planta del agave, que es cultivado en todo el territorio estatal; somos uno de los siete estados que posee la denominación de origen y ocupamos el segundo puesto en la producción de agave y mezcal en el país.

Una botella de mezcal pasa por un proceso acompasado por el tiempo ya que las plantas de agave deben crecer pacientemente por siete años hasta alcanzar la maduración necesaria para ser procesadas; se cortan las pencas y se deja la piña que se cuece, se fermenta, se destila y coloca en las barricas, donde se reposa hasta ser envasado; entonces está listo para ser degustado por quienes gustan de un buen mezcal.

Para entrar en contacto con los dioses durante tu visita a la tierra de cantera y plata, es indispensable que degustes las variedades de mezcal que afianzan el sentido de identidad nacional; disfruta las de la región de los cañones de Juchipila y Tlaltenango (al sur del Estado), donde se utiliza el agave azul tequilana como materia prima, la misma que da vida al tequila de Jalisco; deleita tu espíritu con el mezcal de Pinos, municipio productor por excelencia de esta bebida, y

con el del Teúl de González Ortega, donde se ofrecen recorridos para explicar el proceso de producción y degustaciones que seguramente te encantarán.

Solo en la región de los cañones al sur del Estado, existen 4 416 hectáreas plantadas de agave azul; la producción de esta zona destaca a nivel estatal con 23 marcas registradas de esta bebida que seguramente te acompañará en los paseos nocturnos, las callejoneadas o en las cantinas tradicionales de la capital, donde es conocida la frase “para todo mal mezcal; para todo bien, también”, que es bien asimilada por los visitantes de estas tierras.

It is said that the drink of the gods was gifted to men in the form of mezcal. Since ancient times, in Zacatecas we are proud of this spirit made from the agave plant which is grown throughout the state; we are one of only seven states that own the appellation of origin and we occupy second place in the production of agave and mezcal in the country.

A bottle of mezcal goes through a process dictated by time, as the agave plants must be patiently grown for seven years to reach the appropriate point of ripeness so it can be processed; the stalks are cut off leaving the core which will be cooked, fermented, distilled and placed in barrels, where it is left to rest until packaged; it is then ready to be enjoyed by those who like a good mezcal.

If you wish to make contact with the gods while visiting this land of silver and cantera stone, it is essential for you to taste our many varieties of mezcal, which tend to strengthen our sense of national identity. Enjoy the variety from regions such as the canyons of Juchipila and Tlaltenango (to the south of the state) where the tequilana blue agave is used as raw material, the same one used to give life to the famous tequila of Jalisco. Delight your taste buds with the mezcal from Pinos, producer par excellence of this drink, along with Teúl de González Ortega, where tours and tasting are offered which you will surely enjoy.

Merely in the canyon region south of the state, there are 4 416 hectares of harvested blue agave; the production in this area stands out, state wide, for its 23 registered brands which will surely accompany you in the late night strolls, callejoneadas or in the traditional cantinas of the capital, where they coined the phrase “para todo mal mezcal; para todo bien, también” (for every wrong, mezcal, and for every right as well), which is usually taken to heart by our visitors.

In your travels through the city’s Historic Center or through some of the Magical Villages you will be able to find multiple place to buy it, whether it be in traditional forms or some other variety, such as blanco (not aged, it is typically harsher and has bolder flavors), reposado (aged from two months to a year) and añejo (heavily aged for one to three years). Paseos taurinos Para ofrecer diversas y mejores atracciones turísticas, promover el desarrollo regional y dar a conocer las labores culturales, la influencia de la industria agropecuaria y el comportamiento de los ecosistemas en el que se desarrolla el ganado bravo, se programan tres eventos anualmente.

En estos paseos taurinos se promueve también la gastronomía y artesanía regional. En la actividad participan tres ganaderías: la de José Julián Llaguno y Torrecilla de Bonilla, de Sain Alto, Zacatecas y la de Suárez del Real, de Villanueva, Zacatecas.

Bullfighting events. To diversify tourism, increase economic and social development, generate job sources and promote cultural production as well as the influence of the agricultural industry and the behavior of the ecosystems where wild cattle is raised, three bullfighting events are programmed annually. These events also help promote regional cuisine and artisan crafts. Three are the main ranches that participate in this event: José Julián Llaguno and Torrecilla de Bonilla, Sain Alto of Zacatecas and Suárez del Real of Villanueva, Zacatecas.

Cabalgata Toma de Zacatecas / Cavalcades

Las cabalgatas tienen la finalidad de promover el turismo de aventura, así como los atractivos naturales de Zacatecas, también la de fomentar la historia, cultura y promover la convivencia familiar. Estas actividades se desarrollan durante todo el año en diversos municipios del Estado, entre ellos, Jerez, Morelos, Sombrerete, Tepetongo, Monte Escobedo, General Enrique Estrada, Guadalupe, Río Grande, Fresnillo y Zacatecas. Un treinta y cinco por ciento de los participantes son foráneos, principalmente de los estados aledaños.

Cavalcades. These horse–riding events are designed to promote the adventure tourism and natural attractions of Zacatecas, as well as to popularize the State’s history and culture, in addition to encouraging family unity. These activities take place throughout the whole year in various towns al through the State, among them we have: Jerez, Morelos, Sombrerete, Tepetongo, Monte Escobedo, General Enrique Estrada, Guadalupe, Río Grande, Fresnillo and Zacatecas.

Around 35 percent of the participants are foreigners, mainly from neighboring States.

Caxcanazo Este evento de turismo alternativo es para vehículos todo terreno; es una actividad bien estructurada en la que quienes tienen estos vehículos disfruten la naturaleza y la aventura mientras demuestran sus habilidades como conductores a través del trayecto trazado, que atraviesa regiones montañosas y topografía accidentada. La ruta fue recientemente creada para hacerla más atractiva: inicia en la ciudad de Aguascalientes y concluye en el Hotel–spa Paraíso Caxcán, en el municipio de Apozol, Zacatecas.

Caxcanazo. This alternative tourism event is a race for All Terrain Vehicles; it is a well–structured activity in which the participants enjoy nature and adventure while demonstrat-

ing their driving skills through the traced path, which usually takes them across mountainous regions and uneven terrain. A new route was recently created, in order to make it more appealing: it begins in the city of Aguascalientes and ends in the Hotel and Spa Paraíso Caxcán, in the town of Apozol, Zacatecas.

400 gr de nopales / nopals 30 gr de zanahoria / carrots 30 gr de cebolla / onions 30 gr de poro / leeks 20 gr de cilantro / cilantro 60 gr de tocino / bacon 150 ml de crema / sour cream 500 ml de consomé de pollo / chicken broth

3 nopales / nopals 100 gr de queso panela asado / grilled panela cheese 100 gr de cebolla cortada tipo ciselé / finely chopped onion 1 elote / the kernels from one fresh corn cob 20 gr de manteca / lard 20 gr de epazote / epazote 4 camarones / shrimps

Aceite al gusto / oil to taste Procedimiento: sudar el tocino, la cebolla, el poro y la zanahoria, agregar los nopales y el cilantro, agregar el caldo, sazonar con sal y pimienta y licuar.

Directions: sweat the bacon, onions, leeks and carrots in the same pan, add the nopal and cilantro cook until soft, follow with the broth and finish off with salt and pepper to taste.

Remove from heat and blend until smooth. Garnish with chili oil and a few leaves of fried epazote.

Aceite de chile / chili oil 30 gr de chile mirasol / mirasol chilies 100 ml de aceite de oliva / olive oil

Procedimiento: infundir el chile con el aceite, licuar muy bien y colar.

Directions: infuse oil with chilies, blend until completely smooth and strain.

Sal / salt Pimienta / pepper Procedimiento: sudar cebolla, elote, camarón y epazote en la manteca; cortar los nopales en círculos de tres centímetros y asarlos; cortar el queso en círculos de tres centímetros; montar en torre el nopal, el queso y el relleno de elote y el camarón. Colocar las torres de nopal en el plato; servir la sopa en un tazón y decorar con el aceite y hojas de epazote frito.

Directions: sweat the onion, corn, shrimp and epazote with the lard until fully cooked; cut the nopal in three cm circles and roast them, stack one of the nopal circles with a slice of the cheese and top with the corn mixture, continue this pattern to form a small tower.

Bavaroise y tuile de miel de mezquite helado de flor de calabaza, crumble al cardamomo (para cuatro personas) / Mezquite honey Bavarian cream and tuile, Squash blossom ice cream, cardamom crumble (Serves four) Bavaroise de miel de flor de mezquite 160 ml leche / milk 2 vainas de vainilla / vanilla bean pods 60 gr miel de mezquite / mezquite honey 2 hojas de grenetina / sheets of unflavored gelatin 2 yemas / egg yolks 120 gr crema para batir / whipping cream

Procedimiento: realizar una crema inglesa de vainilla (hervir la leche y dejar infundir las vainas de vainilla; blanquear los 60 gramos de miel con las yemas de huevo; verter la leche en la mezcla de miel y de yemas de huevo; poner la olla con la mezcla en un fuego lento y cocer sin hervir hasta que nappe la cuchara), agregar la grenetina en la crema inglesa y disolver. Enfriar en un bol arriba de hielo. Agregar en forma envolvente la crema semimontada. Cuando la mezcla esté casi dura, verterla en un molde.

Directions: make vanilla custard (boil the milk with the vanilla bean pods; whisk the honey and egg yolks together until they ribbon, pour the warm vanilla milk over the honey and egg mixture, return to heat and allow it to simmer without boiling until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon) and dissolve the gelatin into it. To cool place the custard in an ice bath, once it is cool fold in the whipped cream. When the mixture is firm pour it into a mold and allow it to set.

Tuile de miel de flor de mezquite 50 gr azúcar / sugar 35 gr mantequilla fundida / melted butter 25 gr miel de flor de mezquite / mezquite honey 25 gr harina / flour Procedimiento: calentar el azúcar con la mantequilla fundida y la miel; agregar la harina; enfriar; extender la masa sobre silpat y hornear a 160 grados de seis a siete minutos.

Directions: In a pan heat the sugar, butter and honey; once melted add the flour and stir until smooth then allow it to cool. Spread the batter out on a silpat and bake at 160°c for six to seven minutes.

Helado de flor de calabaza / Squash blossom ice cream 50 gr flores de calabaza / squash blossoms 250 ml leche / milk 250 ml crema para batir / whipping cream 2 vainas de vainilla / vanilla seed pods 100 gr de azúcar / sugar 3 yemas / egg yolks Procedimiento: blanquear las yemas con el azúcar. Licuar la leche y la crema con las flores de calabaza, llevar a calentar y agregar la mezcla del azúcar con las yemas de huevo hasta que nappe la cuchara; enfriar en un bol arriba de hielo.

Verter la crema inglesa en la máquina para helado; cuando tenga la consistencia deseada, poner a congelar.

Directions: Whisk yolks and sugar to ribbon. Blend the milk, cream and squash blossom place over medium heat add yolk and sugar mixture until it is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. To cool place bowl over an ice bath. Pour the cool mixture into ice cream machine until desired consistency is achieved, store in freezer.

Crumble al cardamomo / Cardamom Crumble 20 gr polvo de almendras / almond meal 20 gr mantequilla / butter 20 gr harina / flour 20 gr azúcar mascabado / molasses sugar Cardamomo al gusto / Cardamom to taste Procedimiento: mezclar todos los ingredientes hasta obtener una pasta, poner en una charola la pasta entera y hornear a 180 grados por diez o doce minutos.

Directions: Mix all the ingredients until a paste is formed, spread paste on buttered baking sheet and bake at 180°c for 10 to 12 minutes.

Decoración / For decorating 4 flores de calabaza / squash blossoms 50 gr jarabe / corn syrup Procedimiento: Barnizar las flores con el jarabe y colocar en silpat y hornear a 90 grados por dos horas para deshidratar.

Directions: Glaze the flowers with the syrup and place on a silpat, bake at 90°c for 2 hours to dehydrate.

Asado de boda / Guava and red chili sauce 50 gr de manteca de cerdo / lard 2 piezas de clavo de olor / cloves 1 gr de pimienta negra / black pepper Mejorana al gusto / Marjoram to taste Tomillo al gusto / Thyme to taste 1 rajita de canela / cinnamon stick 2 hojas de laurel / laurel leaves 50 gr de jitomate / tomatoes 60 gr de cebolla / onion 1 diente de ajo / garlic clove 1 tortilla dura / stiff tortilla 50 gr de galletas de animalitos / animal crackers 200 gr de guayaba madura / ripe guava 50 gr de piloncillo / panela 50 gr de chile ancho / ancho chili 50 gr de chile guajillo / guajillo chili 500 ml de consomé de pollo / chicken broth Sal / salt

Procedimiento: en una cacerola, calentar manteca y freír las especias, el jitomate, la cebolla, el ajo, la tortilla, las galletas, la guayaba y el piloncillo. Asar los chiles, tener cuidado de no quemarlos para no amargar el asado. Agregar los chiles a la mezcla anterior y agregar el consomé de pollo y dejar hervir hasta que estén suaves; licuar muy bien y regresar a la cacerola hasta obtener la consistencia deseada; sazonar.

Directions: in a pot heat the lard and fry the spices, tomato, onion, garlic, tortilla, crackers, guava and panela. Roast the chilies, be careful not to burn them or your sauce will be bitter. Add the roasted chilies to the previous mixture along with the broth and let it boil until they are soft. Blend everything and return to the heat until it thickens; season to taste.

Procedimiento: escalfar el chile en aceite (quitarle la piel, en aceite muy caliente), reservar. Saltear la cebolla, el ajo, el chile serrano y el chorizo, agregar el queso; flamear con el mezcal; rellenar los chiles con esta mezcla.

Procedimiento: trabajar los 350 gramos de tilapia en el procesador con la clara de huevo, agregar la crema y reservar.

Saltear la cebolla, el ajo y el xoconostle, sazonar con sal y pimienta, dejar enfriar y agregar a la mezcla de tilapia.

Rellenar los filetes de pescado con la mezcla del xoconostle y cocerlos en agua.

Directions: in a food processor mix the 350 gr of tilapia with the egg whites and sour cream, set aside. Sauté the onion, garlic and xoconostle, season to taste with salt and pepper, let it cool and add to the tilapia mixture. Stuff the four fillets with the xoconostle mixture and seal to prevent spilling and boil them until cooked.

Procedimiento: cortar la papa en círculos de cuatro centímetros y marcar en centro un circulo de tres centímetros sin llegar al fondo; cocerlos en la mantequilla clarificada hasta que esté bien dorada, después cocerla con el consomé de res, el tomillo y el laurel. Para el relleno de la papa, hidratar el chile mirasol en agua caliente y licuarlo con un poco de agua. En un sartén, acitronar la cebolla, el ajo, el tocino y la yesca; agregar el chile licuado dejar reducir y sazonar con sal y pimienta. Con ayuda de un cuchillo, por un costado, quitar el circulo marcado en el centro de la papa ya cocida; rellenar con la mezcla de yesca.

Directions: Slice the potatoes in 4 cm thick circles and mark a 3 cm circle in the center of each without cutting through to the other side, sauté them in the clarified butter until golden, afterwards simmer with the beef broth, thyme and laurel. For the filling, hydrate the mirasol chilies in warm water and blend. Sauté the onion, garlic, bacon and yesca; add the blended mirasol chili, season with salt and pepper to taste and cook until all the liquid is gone. With the aid of a knife remove the marked 3 cm circle from the cooked potatoes and fill with the yesca mixture.

Zacatecas, tierra de artistas de talla internacional, alberga el Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez, único en su tipo, dedicado al artista universal homónimo; ahí podrás llenarte la pupila con las creaciones de este artista plástico y de otros más de ciento diez representantes nacionales y extranjeros de importante trayectoria en el arte abstracto.

El edificio, construido en el siglo, xix fue sede del Seminario Conciliar de la Purísima de Zacatecas, para, posteriormente, ser ocupado como penal; este hecho marcó la historia y la mística del lugar que actualmente muestra una renovada frescura en una afortunada combinación de elementos originales de la edificación y modificaciones que lo hacen un lugar único para el disfrute del arte y la cultura contemporánea.

Luego de visitar el hermoso edificio que ocupa el museo, puedes conocer su Museograbado, espacio multidisciplinario dedicado a la creación, la formación, la producción y la investigación gráfica que hace dieciséis años abrió sus puertas por iniciativa del maestro Felguérez y de Mercedes Oteiza (su esposa), con el esfuerzo tenaz de Álvaro Ortiz (q.p.d.) y la valiosa asesoría de Alfonso López Monreal, otro grande de la plástica zacatecana.

Consolidado como uno de los centros de la gráfica más importantes del país, el Museograbado ha impreso obras artísticas de calidad y exquisitez únicas para los amantes de las artes plásticas así como para especialistas en esta materia que, desde 1999, han nutrido este espacio con la realización de simposios internacionales en torno de la gráfica, distintos talleres, venta de obra, subastas y exposiciones.

Gracias a importantes convenios, el Museograbado ha establecido relaciones de colaboración e intercambio artístico, muestras y exhibiciones con instituciones de países como Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Escocia, Argentina, Italia, España y Colombia. Esto le ha permitido consolidarse como un importante polo de desarrollo cultural para los artistas locales que, inspirados en los grandes maestros, han interactuado con artistas de renombre internacional como José Luis Cuevas, Vicente Rojo, Antonio Peyrí, Luis López Loza, Gabriel Macotela, Francisco Castro Leñero, Jordi Boldó e Irma Palacios, entre otros.

Este peculiar centro de producción artística contemporánea, además de organizar exposiciones y difundir la disciplina a nivel internacional, establece programas educativos para artistas, impresores, coleccionistas y público en general; también genera importantes proyectos artísticos en estrecha colaboración con la comunidad para consolidar las sinergias entre la cultura y el arte.

After visiting the beautiful building that houses the museum, stop by the Museograbado, multidisciplinary space dedicated to creating, training, producing and graphic research, which sixteen years ago by initiative of master Felguérez and Mercedes Oteiza opened its doors, helped by the tenacious efforts of Álvarado Ortiz and the valuable guidance of Alfonso López Monreal, another one of Zacatecas’ great artists.

Teatro Calderón Un recinto majestuoso Uno de los edificios que más sobresalen en las principales calles del Centro Histórico de Zacatecas es el bellísimo Teatro Fernando Calderón, de estilo renacentista italiano en la fachada; además de estar en una zona estratégica de la ciudad, es uno de los recintos más importantes del Estado, pues en él se llevan a cabo diversas actividades, entre ellas, funciones de danza, de teatro, presentaciones de libros, conciertos y exposiciones de pintura y fotografía, así como eventos oficiales y académicos como coloquios, conferencias, congresos, talleres, etcétera.

Este majestuoso inmueble se comenzó a construir en 1891; el encargado de darle vida fue el arquitecto George A. King, asistido por el ingeniero Luis G. Córdova. La inauguración del recinto cultural se llevó a cabo el 16 de mayo de 1897 con una puesta en escena denominada Un estudiante de Salamanca, de José de Espronceda.

El estilo del lugar se torna neoclásico romántico; en su decoración se pueden observar detalles ornamentales alegres y luminosos que hacen resaltar aún más los espacios del teatro como el vestíbulo y sus salones.

El recinto cultural estuvo bajo la administración del Ayuntamiento del Estado hasta 1962, año en el que, por orden del gobierno, pasó a manos de la Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, antes llamado Instituto de Ciencias de Zacatecas.

Para mantener su esplendor y reparar los severos daños del interior, el teatro ha sido remodelado en dos ocasiones: en junio de 1986 y en abril de 2011.

Sin duda alguna, el Teatro Fernando Calderón vivirá siempre en el corazón de quienes lo visitan, pues este inmueble ha sido considerado uno de los atractivos más bonitos de esta capital virreinal. No lo pienses más, vive parte su historia.

A majestic Venue. One of the most distinctive buildings in the main streets of the Historic Center of Zacatecas is the beautiful Fernando Calderón Theater, with its Italian renaissance style façade. In addition to being in the heart of the city, it is one of the most important places in the state, host to a wide array of activities, among them dance recitals, plays, books launches, concerts and painting and photography exhibitions, in addition to official and academic events such as symposiums, conferences and workshops.

This majestic building was built in 1891; responsible for bringing this project to life was the architect George A. King, assisted by the engineer Luis G. Córdova. The opening of this cultural venue took place on the 16th of May, 1897, with a stage play The Student of Salamanca, by José de Espronceda.

The theater’s design is neoclassical romantic with cheerful and bright ornamental details that highlight the spaces within the theater such as the lobby and lounges.

The theater was administrated by the state government until 1962, year in which, by order of the government, it passed into the hands of the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (Autonomous University of Zacatecas), formerly known as the Instituto de Ciencias de Zacatecas (Science Institute of Zacatecas) Seeking to maintain its splendor and repair the severe damaged to its interior, the theater has been renovated twice: in June 1986 and in April 2011.
