It used to be that 10,000 was a lot. Procuring, organizing, assembling - short managing - 10,000 of anything used to be difficult, and conquering difficulty is always impressive. But today, our computational abilities are astounding and getting to 10,000 is easy. Today, it’s as easy as getting to one. Of course, these is a new upper limit, and it increases daily. Eventually, the upper limit effectively will be infinity. We all know this, celebrate this, and knowing fully the impossibility of achieving our goal, we continue to chase it. We are fast approaching the point at which computers are limited only by physical law. What do we chase then? Random Walk proposes a 13.1 mile long hallway on the East River in Midtown Manhattan. The project seeks to literalize the monotony of it’s own design by precisely choreographing aimless circulation though erratic interior folds. Capitalizing on currently available computational power, this project inverts the value structure of the one-becomes-many to produce a single path from over 500,000 points in space. This project emphasizes an awareness of algorithmic design methods and highlights the absurdity of the millions of calculations necessary to its production.
