to settle several runoff races and propositions left over from the November 6 ballot. In the capital region, the associate justice for the Louisiana Supreme Court topped the ballot. Republican Jeff Hughes won Saturday’s runoff election for the District 5 seat on the seven-member Louisiana Supreme Court by 6 percentage points over Democrat John Michael Guidry. In complete but unofficial returns, Hughes had 52,939 votes, or 53 percent, to Guidry’s 47,259 votes, or 47 percent. cent of registered voters cast their ballots in the runoff for Supreme Court compared to the November 6 primary which attracted 66.2 percent turnout. Hughes, 60, currently serves on the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal. South of Zachary, in the East Baton Rouge Metro Council’s District 2 runoff election, Chauna BanksDaniel was victorious over former Baker Councilman and Mayor Leroy Davis by an almost 72-28 percent margin. In another contentious judges race, Judge Mike McDonald was easily re-elected Saturday to the state 1st Circuit Court of Appeal. McDonald, a 66 year-old Republican from Baton Rouge, defeated Baton Rouge lawyer and Democrat Gideon Carter III, 57, in a runoff election. McDonald collected 28,958 votes, or 61.5 percent, to Carter’s 18,126 votes, or 38.5 percent. In the Zachary Community School District, a 10 year 38.2 mill

Wednesday morning a large crowd of business owners, disability activists, and educators from around Louisiana packed a chamber at the Old State Capitol to honor the 2012 recipients of the Governor's Outstanding Leadership in Disabilities Awards (GOLD Awards.) Local businessman Jim Odom, whose family owns the Star Associated Grocer in Jackson, LA, won the statewide top award for Employer of the Year. The GOLD Employer of the Year award is presented to employers whose contributions have advanced the opportunities of individuals with disabilities or for those who have been selfless in serving the disabled com-

munity in Louisiana; it also recognizes employers that actively recruits, hires and accommodates employees with disabilities. “We just try to do the right thing and be good neighbors. There are several group homes in the Jackson area, and we try to help citizens with developmental disabilities seamlessly assimilate into society to create effective partnerships for the betterment of our community,” Jim Odom said during his acceptance speech. Star AG has made it a priority to offer opportunities to developmentally disabled people for decades , according to East Feliciana School Board Member Beth Dawson. Dawson nominated Star AG for the prestigious award.

Zachary Resident Requires Heart Transplant CHAMBER GROWTH Brian Spillman, a Zachary resident for the past eight years, was recently admitted to Ochsner in New Orleans in order to start the process for a heart transplant. Brian has been a diabetic since he was eight years old. Now, at age 39, heart disease caused by his diabetes has progressed to the point that a transplant has been recommended. Brian is married to Amy Spillman and has two teenaged boys, both of whom attend Zachary schools. A state championship coach and teacher, Brian has had to stop working due to his health condition. Family and friends are rallying around the Spillmans to help them fundraise for the upcoming medical bills. A raffle has been organized for a Remington.308 rifle with scope. Tickets are $2 each and the raffle will be held on January 27, 2013. Raffle tickets are presently being sold at Davis Gun and Pawn in Baker and Dry’s Pharmacy in Zachary. All proceeds will go to Brian’s medical and travel expenses. The family also has an account set up at Chase bank and donations

may be made at any Zachary or Baton Rouge branch. “God has blessed with an awesome group of family and friends and a loving church family that has been there with us so far. We would appreciate any help … and please remember our family in your prayers,” said Amy Spillman.

The chamber also plans to advertise for a part-time administrative assistant to help carry out both chamber and economic development goals, helping to improve overall operations and increase value for its members. Interested individuals may visit the chamber website at www.zacharychamber.com. Additionally, the chamber will be hiring a short-term, project-based intern to help with information technology and graphic design.

property tax renewal for school operations narrowly passed by a 5248 percent margin. Since the beginning of the Zachary Community School System, the community has consistently supported higher taxes for building campuses, teacher salaries, and operations by wide margins. Despite little opposition, the tax renewal passed by a little more than 100 votes, causing some supporters of the Zachary schools to rethink how well the district communicates with the public concerning fiscal policy.

#5 Sharon Phenald

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they inspire sweeping change in a community or touch hundreds of lives through their service. But just as often, a hero quietly helps a single individual, perhaps, as in Sharon Phenald’s case, making a life-changing decision ultimately affecting the course of her life as well as the life of the child who entered her life in an uncommon way. Almost 15 years ago at age 48, Sharon Phenald (or Aunt Shine as her family members affectionately call her) was pretty much set in her ways. She enjoyed her life, had great friends, was single with a grown son, and enjoyed her career working in the administrative side of the home health industry. Then she received a call from the women’s prison from one of her nieces. “Aunt Shine, I am in trouble. I am in prison for drugs, and I am pregnant. I don’t know what to do,” Sharon remembers her niece saying. Sharon knew that her niece was a drug addict who wasn’t likely to get her life together, but she helped her get out of prison, pleading with her to take care of herself for the sake of the baby. It wasn’t long before her niece disappeared into the drug culture for several more months before being arrested again. Once again, Sharon received a phone call from her niece at the women’s prison. “Aunt Shine, I am going to have

this baby soon; and I need you to take her till I get out,” her niece implored. Sharon wanted to help her niece, but finances were tight and she really couldn’t afford a baby at the time. It would just be too much. That night as Sharon lay in bed,

Finally, the day arrived. Sharon remembered: “I received a phone call from my niece saying that she was in labor, in custody, and that if no one came to get the baby then the infant would be separated from her and sent to an institution or orphanage where prisoners’ babies go

she prayed about what she should do. “Just have faith,” is what Sharon recalled feeling God saying to her. “Have faith.” As the days before the birth of the baby passed, Sharon remembers feeling a heavy burden on her heart, still unsure what to do. She relied on her faith to guide her through the dark moments as she stayed in and out of communication with her niece during the last few weeks of the pregnancy.

because no one else in her family would help with the baby.” At that moment a total peace passed over Sharon; she knew what she had to do. On the way out the door, she told a few of her friends, “I am going to bring the baby home with me!” When Sharon arrived at the hospital, her niece had just given birth to a baby girl. Sharon followed the nurse back to her niece’s room, and as soon as she laid eyes on her, the

doubts and worries that had plagued her for the last few weeks drained away completely. Sharon’s niece asked her if it was all right that she had already named the baby. Being new to this type of situation, Sharon asked, “Of course; what did you name her?” “Her name is Faith. Faith Elizabeth Varnado,” said her niece as she was taken back into custody. Some 48 hours later, Sharon Phenald went home with Faith to find a fully outfitted nursery waiting for them thanks to the wonderful efforts of some friends and family she had notified on the way to the hospital. Faith, as she has been known her whole life, is now a very happy, and very fortunate, teenager. “I am thankful and terribly blessed to be where I am today. I always think about how my life changed forever because of one caring, unselfish, and loving woman– Sharon Phenald,” said Faith. Faith is an honor student at Northwestern Middle School; she loves animals and wants to be a veterinarian. She nominated her mom, Sharon Phenald, not only as her personal hero but also as an example of the countless loving “parents” in the community who have decided to love and raise “adopted” children. Faith has very little communication with her biological parents, and she is perfectly happy with that because, as she says, she knows who her real momma is…Sharon Phenald.

The Zachary Fire Department was able to present a check for $2,033.87 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation– Baton Rouge affiliate last Friday afternoon. The fire department raised funds via its Pink Helmet Campaign for which 52 local businesses purchased pink regulation helmets to be worn by firefighters at all calls during the month of October. Captain Gordon Lipscomb, who suggested the fundraiser, said their initial goal was to sell 22 helmets, a number that they far surpassed. The pink helmets were returned to the businesses in November to be displayed until next year when they will have to “buy back” the helmets with an additional donation.

This year, the cost of purchasing the helmets was part of the $300 donation. Assuming the same number of donors next year, the contribution to Susan G. Komen should be quite a bit larger. Upon accepting the check, Janet Dewey-Kollen with the Susan G.Komen Baton Rouge affiliate, which serves 10 parishes, explained the check will enable the organization, for instance, to provide approximately 20 mammograms, which cost $100 to conduct. In this way, they can offer under-served women the best chance at beating breast cancer–early detection. “I can’t say how much we appreciate it,” said Dewey-Kollen upon receiving the check.

The ZHS Lady Broncos soccer team placed in the Gulfport Showcase Tournament during the weekend of November 30. The team placed third out of 13 teams from Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. The fog was heavy, but the inclement weather did not stop the Lady Broncos from demonstrating teamwork and drive. Under Coach Tanner’s direction, the girls had been practicing daily, and it paid off at the tournament. The team played three games: Zachary vs. St. Martin (6-1), Zachary vs. Pass Christian (4-5) and Zachary vs. Picayune (2-1).

Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) nuclear laboratories have been granted reaccreditation for three years by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC), which acknowledges the facility’s commitment to high-quality patient care and quality diagnostic testing. To earn this accreditation, CIS’s 10 nuclear laboratories, including the one in Zachary, underwent rigorous examinations of operational and technical components by a panel of experts. The IAC only grants accreditation to facilities that are found to be providing quality patient care in compliance with national standards through a comprehensive application process and detailed case study review. Nuclear cardiology procedures are used to assess both cardiac function and blood flow to the heart muscle. By using nuclear procedures, physicians are able to detect the presence of cardiovascular disease and may also discover important information regarding the potential occurrence of future heart attacks. With a team of nearly 500 dedicated team members, CIS serves communities throughout Louisiana, as well as national and international patients, at its 13 clinics. CIS consistently positions itself at the forefront of technology by providing the most up-to-date technology coupled with compassionate care. This mission has guided the institute for more than 29 years of service to south Louisiana. For more information about CIS, call 1-800-4252565 or visit www.cardio.com.
