This Sunday is Easter Sunday. It is a time for us to reflect as Christians on the gift the Lord Jesus gave all of us who believe in Him. This Easter will be unique, due to the Covid-19 quarantine, we will not be able share this occaision within our churches. In years past, it was very easy for us to neglect the importance and meaning of this holiday, and become absorbed with the commercial aspects of candy, bunnies and eggs, but this year we have the oportunity to reflect internally on and to understand the importance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as central to the Christian faith. Without the resurrection, our Christian faith would be just wishful thinking, no better than human philosophies and speculative religions. In fact, the noted seventeenth-century philosopher John Locke, some of whose ideas were incorporated into the Declaration of Independence, wrote, “Our Savior’s resurrection is truly of great importance in Christianity, so great that His being or not being the Messiah stands or falls with it.” More so than Christmas or any other holiday, Easter is what Christianity is all about. Without the resurrection there is no hope. With it, even death has no sting. Jesus spoke to his disciples about His sufferings and death: “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise (Mark 8:31). Daniel Duggan again” Paul knew that without the resurrection our salvation could not have been possible (1 Corinthians 15). He was also convinced a person couldn’t be saved without believing in the resurrection of Jesus: “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved” (Romans 10:9). It is important to remember that Paul, the other apostles, and every leader in the early church continually proclaimed Christ’s resurrection as the culmination of His ministry. Those men were so captivated by the significance of the resurrection that they could not help but preach it. And that should be our attitude today. The good news of Christ’s birth is only trumped by the great news of his death, burial and resurrection. This Holy Week, as we practice safe social distancing, take some extra time to reflect on the greatest gift God ever gave us, His son, and through Him eternal life.

Zachary Community Turns Out for “We Care Caravan” Parade

Zachary citizens and first responders came together, but socially distant, Wednesday morning with the shared goal of expressing gratitude to the staff of Lane Regional Medical Center. Hundreds of Zachary residents led by Zachary First Responders caravanned down Main Street through the parking lot of Lane Hospital to show their appreciation, love, and support for the dedicated Lane Heroes. The “We Care Caravan” featured handmade posters and signs, plus lots of smiles, cheers, honks and waves for the staff of Lane Regional Medical Center. The staff at local hospitals are manning the front lines in the response to the Covid-19 virus outbreak.

ZUMC Making Masks for Health Professionals

Members of the Friends and Needles sewing outreach ministry at Zachary United Methodist Church perform acts of kindness weekly to benefit members of the community. This year, the ladies used their sewing skills to make mats and tote bags for the homeless. Partnering with Galilee Baptist Church and the LOT program, members of Friends and Needles use sterile surgical wrap gathered from operating rooms at Lane Regional Medical Center to make the mats and tote bags in their outreach mission to the homeless. On March 19, Staff Development Director Allyson Bennett, with Lane Reginal Hospital, contacted her mother, Kathleen Hopewell, who is a member of the Friends and Needles group, about Lane’s need for PPE masks. Ms. Bennett asked if Friends and Needles could sew them some for employees in direct contact with COVID 19 patients. Friends and Needles (F&N) members were de-

lighted to help Lane Hospital with their request. After all, they are returning the disposable sterile surgical wrap from operating rooms at Lane Regional Medical Center back to the health care workers in the form of PPE masks, making the fabric come full circle. Remarkedly, the PPE masks are made from scraps leftover from the mats and tote bags. Beginning March 20, the F&N group went into action to provide for our local hospital. So far, they have contributed as many as 125 masks to LRMC and are currently providing for Zachary United Methodist Church congregation as needed. They are sewing until someone tells them to stop. Everyone is involved in the 2020 Pandemic health emergency. The community is thankful for volunteers like those with Friends and Needles who are making a positive difference for health care workers in direct contact with COVID 19 patients.
