A blue ribbon panel of former 40 Under 40 honorees was convened to make the final selections. Their job was extremely difficult and arduous considering we had so many outstanding nominations. You are some of the best and the brightest in South Florida. It is my belief that you will continue to be active in social engagement, the political process, mentoring, and commerce. Dr. Simone Alicia is an expert Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner and motivational speaker who teaches people how to be happy. Her philosophy is that removing negative thoughts, habits and memories improves self-worth and allows people to get in touch with their true purpose. Fueled by her passion to help others achieve happiness, Dr. Simone created a program which allows clients to “align the power of their positive subconscious thoughts with their goals, and tap into the energy needed to make their goals a reality.” Dr. Alicia is living her dream of teaching others to live the "S.A.S.O.M" life: Simply Appreciating the Significance of Me.

Dr. Trecia Arthurton is originally from St. Kitts, West Indies. The importance of higher education, community service and blessing others were key foundations of her upbringing. She received her Doctorate of Pharmacy degree in 2002 from Florida A&M University and her Pharmacy Consultant License in 2008. Her professional experience includes Pharmacy Management and Consulting. She positively impacts her community through pharmaceutical care education and disease state management. She currently plays a vital role as part of an integrated health care team in which she provides medication review, patient counseling, and medication errors prevention, for Aetna Rx Home Delivery. Trecia defines success as the ability to not only know your life’s purpose but the courage to walk in it.

Simone Boayue-Gumbs, Esq., is a shareholder at the global law firm of Greenberg Traurig in Miami. She began her career at the prestigious law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York. Simone advises borrowers and lenders in various financing transactions and counsels airlines and private clients in the sale, purchase and leasing of commercial and corporate aircraft. She received her B.A. from Yale University and her J.D. from Harvard Law School. Simone is on the Board of Voices for Children, Chair-elect of the Board of Trustees of First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, and serves on the Finance and Annual Fund Committees at St. Philip’s Episcopal School.

Tiffany C. Britton, Esq., serves as the Police Legal Advisor for the City of Miami Gardens - Miami Gardens Police Department. Ms. Britton provides comprehensive legal advice, represents the City in civil litigation and administrative proceedings. Prior to joining the City, Ms. Britton served as an Assistant State Attorney for the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office. Ms. Britton believes that serving her community is not a burdensome deed, but is a necessary action required for the sustainability of the community at large.

Andell K. Brown, Esq., is a dynamic and skilled trial lawyer practicing in Federal and State Courts throughout Florida protecting the rights of individuals. A graduate of Oakwood University, he received his J.D. from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. After working for the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office, he opened The Law Offices of Andell K. Brown, P.L. His boutique firm has represented a variety of clients ranging from DUIs to misdemeanors and felonies. His commitment to service and excellence earned him “The Best Advocate Award” and recognition for his Pro Bono representation. He has also served as Board Member of the James E. Scott Community Association, and as a member of Generation Next for Legal Services of Greater Miami.

Lotoya K. Brown, is an Instructional Coach for Broward County Public Schools with a focus in Juvenile Education. She obtained a B.S. from FSU and M.S.Ed from Nova Southeastern University. Her background in education, coupled with community activism has produced a passion for youth advocacy. She is a member of The National Education Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, AWIS, Broward Education Foundation, and serves on the E-Board of ΧΨΩ Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is also the Founder/Executive Director of Sole in Love, Inc- a non-profit organization whose purpose is to combine civic engagement, fashion, and education to empower women of all ages to achieve excellence.

Zamarr Brown, RA, LEED AP is the Owner and Principal Architect of Design2Form (D2F), one of the few African-American owned architecture firms in South Florida. A proud graduate of Tuskegee University with a Bachelor in Architecture, he is highly experienced in many areas of architecture including commercial, residential, civic, and religious. A native of Miami, he recognizes the importance of building communities by revitalizing the fabric of neighborhoods and commercial corridors through responsible, environmentally-conscious design. His goal in any project is to stand as a common thread uniting ideas, concepts, budgets, and contexts. Leigh-Ann Buchanan, Esq., is a talented litigator and an innovative personality who has demonstrated a strong record of leadership. Ms. Buchanan concentrates her practice in complex commercial and transnational litigation, white-collar criminal defense, and international commercial arbitration. Her experience includes practice in both state and federal courts. Ms. Buchanan’s commitment to positively influence the South Florida community is illustrated through her public service activities, which focus upon supporting the personal and career development of underprivileged youth, as well as her leadership in serving as the VicePresident of the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association; the Co-Chair of the American Bar Association’s National Task Force on Stand Your Ground Laws; and a member of the Executive Committee of the Friends of New World Symphony. Joel Burnstein, Jr., is the Branch Manager and Vice President, Investments for the Raymond James & Associates (RJA) Miami office. Joel won the RJA Operations Manager of the Year Award as the first African-American and youngest recipient at 27 years old. Throughout his career, he increased branch revenue by over 1,000% and grew from 20 employees to over 100, becoming the seconnd largest RJA branch with $4.7 billion in assets under management. Joel graduated from the University of Miami, received his Certificate of Financial Planning from New York University, and completed his first year at the Securities Industry Institute at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. Joel is involved in the Chapman Partnership for the Homeless and Rebuild Together of Miami Dade County. Will Corbin is the Manager of Research & Strategic Planning at The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s official economic development partnership. He is passionate about the economic stability and well-being of cities and residents, especially those who need help most. As an economic development professional, he believes his occupation is not just a job, but rather a calling – a way to truly leave his mark on Miami and South Florida. Born and raised in New Haven and Madison, Connecticut, Corbin holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Georgia State University and a bachelor’s from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. He began his career at Market Street Services, an economic and community development consulting firm based in Atlanta.

Adrian Felix, Esq., is a senior litigation associate at Carlton Fields, P.A. His practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, franchise litigation, and construction defect cases. Attorney Felix has served as Chair of the Litigation Committee for the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division since 2010, and regularly speaks and writes on trial evidence and e-discovery issues. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Fertile Earth Foundation. Mr. Felix graduated with a B.S. from Duke University, and received a J.D. cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law.

Oshia Gainer Banks, Esq., is a commercial litigation attorney at Clarke, Silverglate, PA. She specializes in state and federal civil rights statutes that govern discrimination and retaliation in employment. Outside of the courtroom, she assists clients with the development of compliance initiatives and training, employee relations, and assurance that employment-related policies and procedures are developed, implemented and updated in accordance with Federal, State and local laws. Mrs. Banks is a Miami native, graduating from Miami Northwestern Senior High School in 1999. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Florida A & M University and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Jason Gilliam-Alexander is the chief executive officer of Mentoring Valuable Protégés, Inc. Jason earned his B.A. in Sociology from Stetson University, was inducted into the institution’s Sports Hall of Fame. He is strong advocate of discipline, education, development, he uses sport as a tool to attract and better prepare youth for the rigors of adulthood. His professional interest focuses on redefining the learning, teaching, and planning methodology for kids through mentoring in (5) core areas: Athletics, Academics, Career Development, Health & Wellness and Leadership. He was recently honored at Morehouse College with the Dedication Award for his contributions to Dwyane Wade Senior’s Pro Pops Foundation. Jasmin Grant is a Donor Relations Coordinator, where she develops and implements fundraising and stewardship strategies for the University of Miami’s $1.6 billion campaign. Jasmin is also an Image Consultant, providing personalized fashion and lifestyle advice to professionals. While in college, she discovered how much her passion for fashion could impact others through her role as the Fashion Coordinator for an on-campus modeling organization. Her creative eye and involvement in an on-campus PR firm led to her becoming one of Florida A&M University’s first campus representatives for Victoria’s Secret PINK Collegiate Collection. She holds a bachelor’s degree from FAMU and will begin her MBA at Florida International University this fall. Young, tenacious, ambitious and brilliant, Blake Hall has climbed the success ladder at Community Health of South Florida Inc. since his start more than seven years ago. He began working at the nonprofit health care company as the Director of Planning and Development and he was later promoted to Executive Vice President. This year, the company will grow by more than 30 percent, in part, because of Mr. Hall’s success in writing grants and having them approved for millions of dollars. His work helped to secure the funding for CHI’s Marathon Health Center that opened in 2007. But this year, the opening of new centers in South Miami and Coconut Grove are also because of Hall’s efforts.

Isheka N. Harrison is the Founder and Chief Scribe of Empyreal Communications, a Christian-based, boutique communications firm specializing in writing, editing and public relations. A native Miamian with over seven years of professional experience in journalism and public relations, her strengths include: written/ verbal communication; print journalism; public, media and community relations, project management, event planning and more. Her writing has appeared in several publications including: ESSENCE Magazine, Miami Herald, South Florida Times, Miami Times and The Saturday Edition. Current projects include: pursuing a Master’s Degree in Communications and launching WordOutLoud.com, a blog site dedicated to spotlighting life, art and culture from a Christian worldview. Janelle Hazell is the Controller at CKP Insurance LLC, a Boca Raton-based retail property and casualty insurance agency serving clients throughout the United States. She received her BA in English from Rutgers University. After working at Chubb as a commercial underwriter for 3 years, Janelle decided it was time for a change of scenery (and weather) and moved to sunny South Florida where she worked at Advanced Insurance Underwriters as an Account Manager and Commercial Lines Manager. In addition, she is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Janelle is an innovative and hard working individual who demonstrates excellence in all of her endeavors. Tiffani Helberg is driven, ambitious and passionate about her work. She recently began working at Community Health of South Florida Inc. as the Vice President of Communications and Development in December of 2012. It was a new challenge that Helberg has excelled in using her strong writing and communication skills to help CHI ‘s public relations and marketing efforts. In just a matter of months, she has managed to get the non-profit health care company both local and national media attention. For Helberg, it was a natural progression in her career after working for more than 15 years in journalism.

Nicole Hendricks leads the Cash Management department at JGB Bank. Hendricks was born in America to Jamaican parents and raised in Miami. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Florida State University in 2002. She has more than 10 years of experience in the banking industry, arriving at this position took hard work, determination, and dedication to my career path and growth as a professional. She considers being a single mother to her two sons her most important job. The financial wizard enjoys running and performing her motherly duties. She strives to deliver excellent service to clients and prospects.

Brett Hudson is an entrepreneur at heart and has been involved in all sides of startup ventures. He has served as a strategy consultant to the Knight Foundation’s “Tech for Engagement” strategic initiative, a multi-million dollar initiative aimed at fostering citizen-centered solutions to modernize and enhance community engagement and democratic processes throughout the U.S. Currently, Hudson serves as the Director for Business Development at The LAB Miami, Miami’s premier entrepreneurial arts and tech collaborative space. While his work focuses on ways to expand Miami’s creative and entrepreneurial culture, his passion for entrepreneurship extends to innovation policy.

Barbara Jacques is the Founder and Creative Director of Jacq’s Organics an all natural skincare line that is ethically and environmentally driven to create artisanal hand-crafted skin care products that are luxurious, free of preservatives, parabens and toxic ingredients. Jacques created the line when her and her husband were expecting their first child and learned about the harmful preservatives in baby skin care products. Featured on WPLG Local 10 as the key force behind Jacq’s Organics, she is an advocate for healthy skin, quality and sustainable ingredients. Jacques is a Florida native and holds a Bachelor in Arts Degree in Communication from the University of South Florida.

Noel Johnson, Esq., is an attorney with the law firm of Weinberg, Wheeler, Hudgins, Gunn & Dial, LLC, wherein he defends his clients in a variety of legal areas. The majority of his practice focuses on complex civil and commercial litigation. Mr. Johnson is an active member of the South Florida legal community. He serves as the President of the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association, formerly known as the Black Lawyers Association. He also actively serves the community as a mentor and leader thorough his activities with the 100 Black Men of South Florida and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Johnson is a graduate of the Morehouse College and the University of Miami School of Law.

Theo Johnson, Th.M., is the new pastor of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Miami, Florida. The Dallas, Tx., native has served in ministry for nearly 15 years.He passionately pursues preaching and teaching the uncompromised Word of God in a relevant and practical way, in order to develop and train disciples, all while engaging and evangelizing the un-churched and unsaved community for Christ. Pastor Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree from Prarie View A&M University and a master’s degree from Dallas Theological Seminary. He is the proud husband of Alicia Johnson and together they are raising four beautiful children.

Born and raised in Lagrange, Georgia, Joshua Jones grew up in a single-family home with two younger siblings. As a graduate of Lagrange High School, he received a marching band scholarship to attend Alabama State University in 2005 where he became a member of the Mighty Marching Hornet band and graduated in 2009 with a B.A. in Communication. After graduation, he relocated to Miami in 2010, where he worked for a Top 100 PR agency, led a new social media division at a boutique agency and is currently the Communications Manager for the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. He was recognized as a “Mover & Shaker” in Coral Gables. His community involvement includes: Our Chance Enterprise and KaBOOM! Niesha Mack-Freeman has spent 15 years investing into the lives of inner-city youth. As an educator, she has educated, mentored, and transformed youth throughout Florida and continues to raise the bar in education. Being a school administrator has not stopped Niesha from teaching, leading, and guiding youth that have been written off by others. Niesha volunteers, mentors, and tutors students spending most evenings and weekends with L.E.A.D. Nation offering her math expertise as they prepare for their coursework and FCAT testing. She’s a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., FAMU National Alumni (Scholarship Committee), and Dade Association of School Administrators.

André C. McAden is the Managing Partner of Blake & Associates CPAs, which provides audit, accounting and tax services to various individuals and organizations throughout South Florida. He is a proud graduate of Florida A&M University, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the prominent School of Business and Industry. Mr. McAden is currently a member of Broward Alliance for Neighborhood Development (BAND), where he serves as Board President. He also is the Financial Secretary for the Florida Federation of Alpha Chapters and an active Board Member for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Broward County.

Shyroll Morris is the Executive Director of Performance Improvement and Oncology Service Line at the University of Miami- Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. She led efforts to develop Satellite Oncology Centers and South Florida’s only Academic Stem Cell Transplant Program. Her impact on the South Florida Healthcare Community is proven having served as Team Leader and Facilitator for many award winning Hospital Patient Safety and Process Improvement Initiatives at the local, state and national level. She is Board Certified in Healthcare Management and a Certified Professional in Health Care Quality.

Determined, disciplined, and ambitious are all words that aptly describe the Founder and CEO of DIBIA Athletic Development, Brandon Okpalobi. Brandon, a native of New Orleans, moved to Miami, in 2000 to pursue higher education and athletic endeavors at the University of Miami. Upon graduation, Brandon combined his business-savvy and passion for sports to develop DIBIA Athletic Development. DIBIA Athletic Development builds excellence in the community through life skills and elite sports training. During his time in Miami, Brandon has selflessly taken an active role in motivating today's youth while honoring God.

Nigerian native, Evelyn Onyejuruwa (own-yeh-joo-roo-wa), was raised in South Florida. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Management from the University of Florida and dual Master’s degrees in Health Service Administration and Public Health from Barry University. She is currently a supervisor with one of Broward’s leading healthcare systems. As Miss Nigeria Florida 2011-2012 and Founder/CEO of Ankara Miami, Inc., a South Florida- based event planning company, Evelyn strives to make transformative impacts by "Redefining African Cultural Trends". Ankara Miami has contributed to entities including the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, Nigerian American Foundation, and Embrace Music Foundation.

Bryan Paschal, Esq., is a lawyer at Rivero Mestre LLP. His practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, securities and financial services litigation, and other general business problem. Mr. Paschal is actively engaged in community service organizations. He serves as the Group-One Director for the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association, and as an 11th Circuit Representative to the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Board of Governors, where he sits on the Board’s 2013-2014 Diversity Committee. His other honors include the 2011 ABA National Criminal Trial Competition Champion, the ABA Criminal Justice Section’s 2011 Trial Competition Best Advocate Award, and the Florida Bar’s Chester Bedell Trial Advocacy Champion.

Intelligent, sincere, creative, and fun-spirited, are all words that appropriately describe Jamila A. Powell, Esq. Jamila was born in Columbus, Ohio, but was raised in Columbia, Maryland. She attended the Pennsylvania State University, where she majored in International Business with a concentration in Business Logistics, and minored in Mandarin Chinese. She spent a year abroad in Beijing, China studying the language and culture. Immediately upon her return to the United States, she began her journey into the legal field. Jamila began studying law at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. After completing her studies and earning her Juris Doctor, she moved to sunny Miami, Florida. She is currently is employed as an Attorney Advisor, with the federal government. Kamila E. Pritchett was born in Virginia, but is a true Miamian through and through. When she was a child, her family moved from Virginia to South Florida, where she began grade school at Charles R. Drew Elementary School. Ms. Pritchett also attended W.J. Bryan Elementary School, North Miami Middle School and graduated from the medical magnet program at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. Ms. Pritchett then went on to obtain an A.A. in Journalism/Mass Communication at Miami-Dade College, and then a B.A. in English and Undergraduate Certificate in African New World Studies at Florida International University. Ms. Pritchett joined The Black Archives as Development Coordinator in February 2013. She is eager to bring her resources to the table as she leads the organization’s local and corporate fundraising initiatives. Bahia Ramos is the Program Director for Community Foundations at the Knight Foundation where she manages their $140 million investment in community foundations across the country and leads the Knight Community Information Challenge contest. She earned her Masters in Public Administration from the City University of New York through the National Urban Fellows program. As a NUF Fellow, she worked with Knight on their national team to build engagement strategies around such initiatives as Soul of the Community. Bahia is from Brooklyn, New York, and sits on the board of Saint Ann’s School. She is a member of Miami Fellows – Class VII and an aspiring DJ. Dr. Chay Reid is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist and the clinical pharmacy coordinator at Jackson South Community Hospital. As clinical pharmacist, he rounds daily in the ICU with a team of physicians and nurses and is a preceptor for pharmacy students. He leads the hospital's Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and was recently honored as the recipient of the hospital's High Achiever Award for his exceptional performance in demonstrating service excellence and quality. Dr. Reid is passionate about providing outstanding patient care and is respected throughout the hospital by the medical and nursing staff for his contributions.

Sal Richardson, Esq., a proud native of Opa-Locka, FL. After high school, he attended the University of Florida, earning three degrees by the age of 24. Now Managing Partner for Litigation for the Florida Offices ATB Law, specializes in Workers Compensation defense for large and small employers and corporate insurance carriers, and has enjoyed doing so for 11 years. Sal’s excellence also extends to the community as a member of several civic, social, and alumni organizations. He is also the proud dad of two princes and a princess.

Peta-Gaye Samuda became the CEO of US Operations for Jencare Skin Farm and Day Spa in 2010. During her short tenure, she has infused rapid growth and new marketing strategies to the company. Her main focus areas are skin care research, operations, and marketing. Ms. Samuda has a Masters in Chemistry from Florida International University for the electrochemical studies of peptides. She has since then focused on the anti-aging facet of skin care and its relationship with collagen synthesis and peptide functions. She has developed her own Jencare line called Nextjen, which targets hyper-pigmented, sensitive, and acne prone skin types that require anti-aging benefits. Marquista A. Shipman, Esq. is the managing partner at Shipman Law, P.A. Mrs. Shipman exemplifies professionalism, service and womanhood all beautifully wrapped in a highly intelligent package. She is an attorney with a strong background in real estate and acquisition who uses her talents and gifts to assist nonprofits such as the YWCA, where she serves as a board member. She is the vice president of New Life Charter Academy, the founder of SICL Development Services, a volunteer with KAPOW Program from Miami-

Dr. Christopher C. Smith is a Miami native, is a proud graduate of the Florida A&M University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. After graduating, Dr. Smith immediately began working at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida as a Clinical Pharmacist where he quickly developed a love for clinical practice areas such as Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, and Psychiatry. After several years, Dr. Smith was first promoted to Clinical Supervisor, and later to Operations Coordinator, where he currently helps to manage all aspects of the pharmacy’s operations. In addition, he actively engages in community service through mentoring, lecturing, and supporting activities which focus on enriching the lives of youth. Dr. Smith is also a devoted husband and proud father of two sons. Thamiah L. Tutt, is an emerging luminary and accomplished development professional committed to making a positive impact on Miami’s civic landscape. Thamiah serves as Director of Development with the Miami Science Museum where she is responsible for strategic leadership and implementation of fundraising initiatives. Thamiah is an alumna of the prestigious Miami Fellows program, a graduate of Leadership Miami and currently serves as President for the National Black MBA Association, South Florida Chapter. She graduated from Clark Atlanta University and earned her MBA at Nova Southeastern University. Sherelle Washington, is a Regional Director with Baptist Health South Florida. In her role, she oversees four outpatient care facilities that specialize in urgent care and diagnostic services. Sherelle has a Bachelors degree in Health Services Administration from Ohio University and a Masters degree in Business Administration from East Carolina University. In 2012, Sherelle became a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Outside of work, Sherelle enjoys volunteering with youth, traveling and scrapbooking. In 2005, Garth Williams began working for the Caribbean gaming giant, Supreme Ventures Ltd. That opportunity helped him develop a passion for strategy and also gave him an appreciation for the quality of leadership required at the executive level. Inspired by the belief that “The proof of what you desire is in your pursuit of it” he moved to Florida to pursue an MBA. Quickly rising through the ranks of Florida’s casino industry, Garth Williams is now Internal Audit Manager at Calder Casino & Race Course, Churchill Downs, Inc., a Florida property will annual revenues exceeding $100 million. Humbled by his own story, Garth often seeks out opportunities to pay-it-forward.
