CAMPUS PLAN SUNY-ESF is in the process of expanding its campus westward. Over time the campus has expanded its footprint by stepping down the hill on a series of terraces. The university has purchased a large surface parking lot from Syracuse University which offers the potential for a culminating terrace on campus. Having recently built a dormitory adjacent to the site, SUNYESF plans to construct a new research building on the lot in the next few years. Due to the campus’s steep terrain and the existing city street grid, connection to the rest of campus is a major issue for the building’s future occupants and the 450 students living in the dormitory. The vital link between the new quad and the rest of campus has been conceived as an elevator and bus stop hybrid that will provide access not only to SUNYESF but also to Syracuse University and downtown.

HUTCHINGS PSYCHIATRIC CENTER URBAN PLANTING PLAN
The planting scheme is based off a purple, blue, and yellow color pallet. These colors have positive effects on the mind. They reduce stress and anxiety and have been known to provide a calm and peaceful atmosphere. The plantings are placed in a way that creates a series of smaller spaces for people to be at ease and enjoy while still feeling a part of the Hutchings campus. The selected plants are low maintenance and perennial making this plan relatively easy to maintain. KEY

[RE]FUELING ERIE BOULEVARD URBAN REVITILIZATION
As gas prices continue to rise and dependence on fossil fuels diminishes, gas stations will be forced to adapt or close. [Re]fueling Erie Boulevard is looking at ways of reusing existing gas station infrastructure in ways that will reconfigure, re-activate, and re-mediate Erie Boulevard, in Syracuse, New York. Gas stations have a cookie-cutter architecture made apparent by the recognizable canopy. The thick plane of the gas station canopy is suitable for new programming while the ground plane is detoxified through phytoremediation. New businesses will emerge in the place of the former gas stations when oil becomes scarce. The canopy will play a more vital role for the new businesses; it will transition from being passive, in the form of shelter, and become a more active feature in the gas station landscape.

HOTEL SYRACUSE PLAZA URBAN REVITALIZATION
The Hotel Syracuse is one of the most iconic and architecturally significant buildings in downtown Syracuse, but unfortunately has sat derelict since the 1980s. With renovations and retrofitting on the hotel underway, the city is looking at potential development on the adjacent properties. The Hotel Syracuse Plaza is a proposal for a new public space that will create a connection between the hotel and Syracuse’s main street. The plaza would replace a surface parking lot with programmable space that reinvigorates the downtown and spurs future development in the district.

ANALYZING LANDSCAPE INFRASTRUCTURE Dutchscape examines the potential of landscape infrastructure integration of transport infrastructure into public space in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, via supporting case studies. The case studies include a hybrid office space at Tussen de Bogen, a green corridor at Churchill-laan, and an innovative stormwater management landscape at Rietlandpark station. Case studies are comprehensively described with diagrams and supportive images for repositioning infrastructure as a viable medium for addressing issues of transit, urbanism, and ecology.

THE POINT PLAZA
CONCEPTUAL RENDERINGS DFB & Associates prepared a schematic concept plan for the landscaping and hardscape at the Point at Silver Spring Plaza. As an intern at DFB, I was responsible for the conceptual renderings and 3D modeling. I visited the site on many occasions to observe and photograph the existing conditions at the plaza and garage levels. Based on information gathered onsite, we prepared the site/landscape plan and graphic visuals for the plaza level. DFB’s design focuses on providing a plaza that addresses the interests and lifestyle of the youthful professional residents living there. Inasmuch as the owners have embarked on a significant repair to the leaking expansion joints throughout the plaza, there exists an opportunity to create an improved space for the use and enjoyment of the residents and to upscale a dated, 60’s era landscape to a contemporary landscape.

SCAJAQUADA CREEK DAYLIGHTING URBAN WATERWAY REDEVELOPMENT
Working as part of an interdisciplinary design team consisting of landscape architecture and environmental resource engineering students, this project addresses the daylighting of a mile of Scajaquada creek on Buffalo’s east side and the neighborhood revitalization potential of the newly revealed waterway. We aimed to reveal Scajaquada creek in Schiller Park, clean the underground stream into an ecologically viable and safe waterway, and connect it with the neighborhoods where it originates. We envision the principles of the project extending beyond the community level, influencing and enhancing the design and function of greater Buffalo’s waterways and park systems. Emphasis was placed on fulfillng ecosystem services such as supporting, provisioning, regulating, and cultural services contributing to the overall health of the Scajacuada creek watershed.
