A VESSEL WITHIN A RUIN.

Spanning the Des Moines River Valley, the historic Kate-Shelley High Bridge serves as a lucid reminder of the unique topographic condition of the watershed. This project provides a meeting place for the Middle Des Moines Watershed Institute, whose goal it is to develop land use management strategies that encourage preservation and protection of the Middle Des Moines ecosystem.

{

This vessel provides a path to perception of the monumental nature of the Kate Shelley Bridge within the Middle Des Moines watershed. It attempts to remove a person from a state of unawareness and, through sensory perception, nourish reflection and discovery.

AQUEDUCT IN ROME.

This project was completed during a semester of study in Rome and focuses on a section of the ancient Aqua Claudia aqueduct located in a park outside of the historic center of the city. In this park, the aqueduct ceases to be a continuous channel slopping downwards from the hills outside of Rome and becomes a string of ruins dotting its original path into the city.

{

This proposal recognizes the brilliant engineering of the original aqueduct and utilizes this on a smaller scale to bring potable water to the park’s users. A modern steel channel is inserted into the ancient stone structure of the aqueduct, reestablishing a 450 ft. void where the aqueduct no longer stands. The channel serves as a trough for rainwater, moving it to the lowest point along this section where it is directed underground to be filtered, stored, and then manually pumped to the surface.
