5 Dollar Toy GLOW ROPE

Background

Execution

The Five Dollar Toy project was a challenging exercise in my opinion. We had to design a custom toy with 5 dollars worth of materials, and then build a poster and foldable to advertise our toy.

For my toy, I decided to make a jump rope out of paracord and two glow sticks. It took a couple trial and error phases of development but I finally perfected it over time. The most fun part of this project was probably coming up with the packaging. Being able to create my very own logo for it was my favorite, as well as creating the pattern to go on the packaging. In addition, being able to draw out my objects and upload them to illustrator was a new concept to me. Using the Adobe Shape app, I scanned my drawings, vectorized them, and created patterns and logos for Glow Rope.

Pages 7-8

On the first two pages I wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted to put on it. During the project I felt like I was constrained to come up with enough body text with no idea how to organize it. Came up with just putting the instructions on the beginning, since thats what everyone was looking for anyway. In addition, I managed to pull off making an image part of the spread, with a sketched continuation of the Glow Rope on the other page.

The next spread is a mashup of all the customer information including but not limited to the intended audience, its uses, as well as a diagram of the materials.

Pages contain a list of features for the Glow Rope. There was a repeated use of luminescent paint strokes forming words relating back to the glowing effect.

5 Dollar Toy Poster GLOW ROPE

Poster While some others had put some intricate work into their poster, I didn’t have much to work with on the time limit I had. I opted to go with a simple product photo and logo placement. Very reminiscent of the object poster trend, like the Priester Matches poster.

If I had more time to create it before the deadline, I probably would’ve tried to use the overlayed glowing paint strokes like on the booklet. In addition the image would’ve been different. Ideally, someone using the actual glow effect in the jump rope.
