CASE STUDY | HIROSHIGE MUSEUM

A group investigation into building structure, four classmates and I were tasked with understanding the construction behind the Hiroshige Museum. I myself created a detailed wall dissection, which is merged as seen on Page 5, as well as worked on a section model of the museum. Designed by Kengo Kuma, with construction finishing in 2000, the intent of the museum is to reflect the works of Ando Hiroshige by creating spatial qualities that are representative of Hiroshige's paintings. Introducing layers into the museum expresses Hiroshige's use of layers in his works. Collaboration with: Madeleine Clermont, Ryan Kiefer, Carrie Tate, Nick Raccosta

GRAFTING MATTERS | JAPANESE BIRD HOUSE

An investigation into adapting a foreign artifact. This Japanese bird house's sole purpose was to house a single family of birds. By taking apart the bird house, modifying it, and putting it back together, the bird house is now able to house multiple bird families. The grafted artifact is now also a perch, which can be used by many birds. A middle level is now present, allowing bird seed, or water, to be placed in it for

CRITICAL

RESPONSIVENESS

The main goal of Fire Station 55 is to expand the role of the typical fire station by responding not only to the function of an emergency response center, but to also respond to the surrounding community and environment. Station 55 is a landmark and catalytic building for the developing north phoenix communities with community-oriented considerations and environmentally responsive design strategies inspired by natural biology and vernacular practices. As a pioneer building in an area of future development, Station 55 has the opportunity to set a precedence to encourage sustainable design strategies and conscientious lifestyles appropriate for Phoenix. WATER | SILVERADO SCIENCE CENTER

Silverado Science Center educates visitors about water. The site calls attention to an intersection of moving waters, introducing the SRP canal to the Indian Bend wash. Silverado Science Center utilizes this opportunity to further explore the treatment, maintenance, uses, conservation, and recycling of water. Silverado Science Center features dynamic movement and applications in hopes of creating a space that encourages users to become educated water resource advocates. Collaboration with: Jordan Hinds

CASE STUDY | STEVEN L. ANDERSON HALL

An investigation into building envelope, as well as structure; the task was to understand the construction behind the Steven L. Anderson Design Center through the construction of a 1/2" = 1'-0" model. Designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects for the University of Arkansas design school, with construction finishing in 2013, the juxtaposition of the new design center on and in to the existing Vol Walker Hall is to demonstrate the building technologies of today. Steven L. Anderson Hall is meant to compliment, yet not intimidate, the existing Vol Walker Hall.

A D A P TA B I L I T Y The area around 1 East Camelback Road is adapting to a modern way of living. People are adapting, as well, to these changes; taking part in the change. 1 East Camelback has the ability to adapt as well. Originally a BMO Harris bank building, 1 East Camelback is adapting into multifamily housing. By introducing passive, sustainable, and biomimetic solutions to the existing structure, 1 E Camelback better adapts to its climate and context.
