CHANEL (Ghost of Christmas Present/Mrs. Gilchrist) – ZACH: Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (Billie Holiday), Raconteur in Sophisticated Ladies, followed by roles as the Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol and a Diva in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, for which she won Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Chanel was raised in the rich musical environs of New Orleans, Louisiana, and grew up singing in churches and alongside jazz greats in the music halls of the French Quarter. Discovered by Quincy Jones while she was still a teenager, Chanel became a founding member of the gospel trio, Trinitee 5:7. The girl group spent almost two decades entertaining audiences on four continents in arenas ranging from Madison Square Garden to the Staples Center to England’s Wembley Stadium. As lead singer of Trinitee 5:7, Chanel has released seven albums and has received two Grammy nominations and won two Dove awards. Her albums have sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide; her first album went Platinum and spent almost 50 weeks on Billboard’s top R&B albums chart, while both of her first two albums debuted at #1 on the Billboard Gospel chart. In addition to performing with Destiny’s Child and TLC at the BET awards, Chanel also shared the stage with Aretha Franklin at the 50th-Anniversary Grammy Awards show. Chanel’s musical theatre debut was at ZACH. Chanel currently lives in Berkeley, California with her husband, Dr. Gregory Schwartz.

Colin lives in Austin with his family and is a student at Brentwood Elementary School. He is in the first grade and especially enjoys math, science, robots, and art class. Colin's favorite activities are participating in Boy Scouts, baseball, soccer, and riding roller coasters!

Notes about A Christmas Carol

I visited Charles Dickens’ London home and archives while creating my adaptation of his beloved novel A Christmas Carol. Charles was one of seven children, and shortly after his twelfth birthday, his father John was sentenced to prison for failure to pay a debt. As the oldest son, Charles immediately went to work at a shoe polish factory, desperate to earn money to repay the debt. The entire Dickens family, now homeless, moved into the father’s prison cell, except Charles, who worked and slept at the factory.

of the poor, in the hope that we the reader will make positive change in our city. I have several friends who have committed themselves as foster parents or have adopted children, and I greatly admire their generous capacity for giving more of themselves than they ever imagined they were capable of, and exponentially reaping the rewards of a greater capacity to love. In honor of these families and in homage to the Dickens family, I made the Cratchits an adoptive family, welcoming any child who needs a loving home. In this home, human kindness is overflowing.

It's easy to understand how deeply this experience impacted his writing. The factory was a miserable place, and living alone there while his entire family lived in prison was more than the sensitive adolescent could bear. His depression and anxiety contributed to a sickly constitution. He never recovered from the terror of poverty, and the deprivations he endured during his family’s crisis.

In A Christmas Carol, Dickens illustrates how someone as self-serving and insensitive as Ebenezer Scrooge can be transformed into a charitable, caring, and socially-conscious, loving member of a community. The parable of Scrooge is a good reminder for all of us to spend our time wisely, to be generous stewards of our community, to celebrate the love in our family or family of choice, and rejoice in second chances to begin anew with the conviction of our heart leading the way. May this holiday ring in more love, more empathy, and more kindness!

About the Artistic Team BRYAN BRADFORD (Director) This year marks Bryan's 14-year relationship and his directing debut with ZACH. His theater career has taken the winding road through acting and stage managing and has inescapably arrived at directing and writing. After many years cutting his teeth in New York, he relocated back to Austin where he recently directed Prodigal Son at Trinity Street Theatre for Jarrott Productions. As a stage manager, his credits range from Broadway (Newsies, Rock of Ages, Kinky Boots), to Off-Broadway and beyond, as well as many productions here at ZACH including In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play; 33 Variations; and Crowns. He would like to thank Dave Steakley and his ZACH family for the opportunity to direct this classic story of giving, redemption, and kindness.

ALLEN ROBERTSON (Musical Director) is a twotime Emmy Award®-winning music director, composer, writer, actor, and director. He has worked on hundreds of productions nationally and internationally, including 24 years of shows at ZACH. Off Broadway: Radio City Music Hall; The Flaming Idiots. Allen has recorded for Disney Records, and many TV and radio commercials. He is a writer/composer of 12 musicals, 60 TV episodes, 2 film scores, and a ballet. He has been recognized by the Texas Legislature, American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, The Texas Music Educators Association, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the National Association of Parenting Publications for his contributions to the arts.

SUSAN BRANCH TOWNE (Costume Design) – ZACH: 30 credits including A Christmas Carol, Sophisticated Ladies, The Who’s Tommy, One Night with Janis Joplin, Ragtime, Xanadu, Hairspray, and The Drowsy Chaperone. ADDITIONAL CREDITS: The Magic Flute for Ballet Austin, The Bat Austin Lyric Opera; She Loves Me, Hamlet, Merrily We Roll Along, The Secret Garden, Carousel and many more at St. Edward’s University where she is an Assistant Professor. DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 27th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin – a place where our entire community gathers to share an intimate and extraordinary theatre experience. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrinaravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times and about which Todd Gershwin says, “It was Dave’s creative production of Porgy and Bess that really opened my eyes to the need to finally allow a creative team to interpret the opera in a fresh manner, which led to the recent Broadway production.” Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: Million Dollar Quartet, The Great Society, Disney's Mary Poppins, Tribes, Mothers and Sons, All the Way, A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ New Musical, The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Harvey; 33 Variations; Ragtime; Next to Normal; Hairspray; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Our Town; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; I Am My Own Wife; Urinetown; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Hedwig; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave serves as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. City of Austin Mayors Kirk Watson and Lee Leffingwell declared, respectively, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’ “Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, seven Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award, and multiple Austin Critics’ Table and B. Iden Payne Awards for “Outstanding Director/Choreographer.” In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s 2012 film Bernie with Jack Black. 54

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) is celebrating her 10th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign. Other accomplishments during her ten years at ZACH include the creation of a new multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 157 percent and grown revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $9 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Elisbeth has led her team in developing innovative new offerings on ZACH’s expanded campus including full-service bars and nightly pre-show entertainment; an exclusive skyline lounge in the Topfer Theatre for donors; and making the theatre available as a red-carpet venue for SXSW, The Daily Show, as well as other major community events. Several years ago, ZACH proudly launched The Dave Steakley Dream Fund designed to enhance the artistic vision of ZACH’s Producing Artistic Director and to maintain production quality and the facility needs of ZACH’s Topfer Theatre and campus. Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed Artists’ Residency Program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. She has been honored by San Jose Magazine, the Austin Business Journal, and the State of California for her work in the arts. Elisbeth currently serves on the Board of Directors and is President Elect of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York, and has served on NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals Committee and Executive Committee. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre, and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 55
