Why I Wrote the Play In 1959, a boyfriend of mine saw the great Billie Holiday in a little dive in North Philadelphia abou three months before she died. He said she stumbled in obviously "quite high," carrying her little Chihuahua Pepi, whom she introduced to her audience. A water glass was kept filled with booze atop the piano for her. She had a piano player perform ten or 12 of her songs for an audience of seven patrons. Then, he said, she staggered out. That image of the world's greatest jazz singer being so undervalued at the end of her life and career was an image that has always haunted me. Writing Lady Day at Emerson's at Bar & Grill was an attempt to rid myself of the ghost. – Lanie Robertson

ZACH: Raconteur in Sophisticated Ladies, followed by roles as the Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol and as a Diva in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, for which she won Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Chanel was raised in the rich musical environs of New Orleans, Louisiana, and grew up singing in churches and alongside jazz greats in the music halls of the French Quarter. Discovered by Quincy Jones while she was still a teenager, Chanel became a founding member of the gospel trio, Trinitee 5:7. The girl group spent almost two decades entertaining audiences around the world in arenas ranging from Madison Square Garden to the Staples Center to England’s Wembley Stadium. As lead singer of Trinitee 5:7, Chanel has released seven albums and has received two Grammy nominations and won two Dove awards. Her albums have sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide; her first album went Platinum and spent almost 50 weeks on Billboard’s top R&B albums chart, while both of her first two albums debuted at #1 on the Billboard Gospel chart. In addition to performing with Destiny’s Child and TLC at the BET awards, Chanel also shared the stage with Aretha Franklin at the 50th Anniversary Grammy Awards show. Chanel’s musical theatre debut was at ZACH. Chanel currently lives in Berkeley, California with her husband, Dr Gregory Schwartz. – "When you sing...Always tell the truth." –Billie Holiday

Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill Director’s Notes

CHANEL Photo by Charles Quinn

“You know what I want? My own club. Where I can sing to all my friends. That's all. What else is there?” –Billie Holiday Billie Holiday is considered by many to have been the greatest jazz singer of all time. Her unique musical style, back phrasing, and manipulation of the tempos of songs gave Holiday a distinctive flair that captured the attention and hearts of the music world. She was and still is the Queen of Jazz.

It could be easy to focus on the victimhood of Holiday’s life. Instead, we aim to celebrate the endurance and grace of a persecuted soul - of someone who chose to embrace the higher ground when the world was offering the low - someone who overcame while expressing herself artistically with integrity and class.

Holiday’s life was anything but privileged. She endured violent relationships, severe poverty, rape, prostitution, drug and alcohol abuse, and the persecution of being a successful and powerful black woman in an era not ready to embrace such virtues.

Our Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill is therefore a tribute to the Queen of Jazz – a tribute to a tortured soul who looked diversity and persecution in the face and overcame the odds. It has been over fifty years since Holiday died and yet she continues to produce a haunting impact through the legacy of her work and the potency of her life story.

At the end of her short life, she was left handcuffed to a hospital bed, under arrest for drug possession, with less than a dollar in the bank. How did this Queen of Jazz come to finalize her existence on such precarious notes?

That story lives on now in our own club… Welcome friends. Pull up chair, grab a drink, enjoy the journey, and the voyage, as I am sure Billie would have wanted. - Michael Rader, Director

Billie Holiday (1915–1959) Biography Count Basie Orchestra Around this time, Holiday met and befriended saxophonist Lester Young, who was part of Count Basie's orchestra. He even lived with Holiday and her mother Sadie for a while. Young gave Holiday the nickname "Lady Day" in 1937—the same year she joined Basie's band. In return, she called him "Prez," which was her way of saying that she thought it was the greatest. Holiday toured with the Count Basie Orchestra in 1937. The following year, she worked with Artie Shaw and his orchestra. Holiday broke new ground with Shaw, becoming one of the first female African American vocalists to work with a white orchestra. Promoters objected to Holiday—for her race and for her unique vocal style—and she ended up leaving the orchestra out of frustration. Born Eleanora Fagan on April 7, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Billie Holiday had a thriving career for many years before her battles with substance abuse got the better of her.

Solo Stardom Striking out on her own, Holiday performed at New York's Café Society. She developed some of her trademark stage persona there—wearing gardenias in her hair and singing with her head tilted back.

Discovery At the age of 18, Holiday was discovered by producer John Hammond while she was performing in a Harlem jazz club. Hammond was instrumental in getting Holiday recording work with an up-and-coming clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman.

During this engagement, Holiday also debuted two of her most famous songs "God Bless the Child" and "Strange Fruit." "Strange Fruit" (1939), a powerful story about the lynching of African Americans in the South, is considered to be one of her signature ballads, and the controversy that surrounded it—some radio stations banned the record—helped make it a hit.

Known for her distinctive phrasing and expressive, sometimes melancholy voice, Holiday went on to record with jazz pianist Teddy Wilson and others in 1935. She made several singles, including "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" and "Miss Brown to You." That same year, Holiday appeared with Duke Ellington in the film Symphony in Black.

Over the years, Holiday sang many songs of stormy relationships, which were often destructive and abusive. She married James Monroe in 1941. Already known to drink, Holiday picked up her new husband's habit of smoking opium. The marriage didn't last, but Holiday's problems with substance abuse continued. (They later divorced.)

Personal Problems That same year, Holiday had a hit with "God Bless the Child." In 1944, her boyfriend was Joe Guy, and with him she started using heroin. After the death of her mother in October 1945, Holiday began drinking more heavily and escalated her drug use to ease her grief.

Billie Holiday began her singign career at Harlem's jazz club Pod's and Jerry's in 1931.

Billie Holiday (1915–1959) Biography After years of lackluster recordings and record sales, Holiday recorded Lady in Satin (1958) with the Ray Ellis Orchestra for Columbia. The album's songs showcased her rougher sounding voice, which still could convey great emotional intensity. She gave her final performance in New York City on May 25, 1959. Not long after this event, Holiday was admitted to the hospital for heart and liver problems. She was so addicted to heroin that she was even arrested for possession while in the hospital. On July 17, 1959, Holiday died from alcohol- and drugrelated complications.

Jazz Trumpeter Louis Armstrong performed with Holiday in the 1947 film New Orleans.

Despite her personal problems, Holiday remained a major star in the jazz world—and even in popular music as well. She appeared with her idol Louis Armstrong in the 1947 film New Orleans. Unfortunately, Holiday's drug use caught up to her. She was arrested and convicted for narcotics possession in 1947. Sentenced to one year and a day of jail time, Holiday went to a federal rehabilitation facility in Alderston, West Virginia. Released the following year, Holiday faced new challenges. Because of her conviction, she was unable to get the necessary license to play in cabarets and clubs. Holiday, however, could still perform at concert halls and had a soldout show at the Carnegie Hall not long after her release. With some help from John Levy, a New York club owner, Holiday was later to get to play in New York's Club Ebony. Levy became her boyfriend and manager by the end of the 1940s, joining the ranks of the men who took advantage of Holiday. Also around this time, she was again arrested for narcotics, but she was acquitted of the charges.

Legacy Considered one of the best jazz vocalists of all time, Holiday has been an influence on many other performers who have followed in her footsteps. Her autobiography was made into the 1972 film Lady Sings the Blues with famed singer Diana Ross playing the part of Holiday, which helped renew interest in Holiday's recordings. In 2000, Billie Holiday was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Diana Ross handling the honors.

Later Years Holiday continued to tour and record in the 1950s. She began recording for Norman Granz, the owner of several small jazz labels, in 1952. Two years later, Holiday had a hugely successful tour of Europe.

Holiday also caught the public's attention by sharing her life story with the world in 1956. Her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues (1956), was written in collaboration by William Dufty.

It's Yuletide season in itty bitty Tuna, Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. Two actors play all 22 colorful citizens, including OKKK Radio hosts Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie who report on the Christmas festivities. This satirical ode to the season is spiked with enough sass to make for one Texas-sized jolly holiday!

We are passionate about producing plays that engage and transform our audiences. This Director's Choice slot is being finalized so that we can bring a recent "best play" from Broadway that does just that.

Enoughie is different from the other kids at school. One day, Enoughie takes an incredible to journey to figure out who he is and how he does belong. This bilingual puppet production will be presented in collaboration with ZACH Theatre, Teatro Vivo, Glass Half Full Theatre, and The Kindness Campaign.

Be Our Guest! This “tale as old as time” follows Belle, a book-smart young woman and the Beast, a formerly dashing young prince cursed by an enchantress. The Broadway smash hit showcases a merry, awardwinning score with such favorites as “Beauty and the Beast,”“Gaston,” and “Be Our Guest.” This delightful family musical enchants and transforms hearts of all generations.

season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin – a place where our entire community gathers to share an intimate and extraordinary theatre experience. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Anna Deavere Smith says, “Dave is the future. The YES in his theater’s walls is as palpable as the walls themselves. That YES, I believe, will lead to something brand new, to connect with a broader, more global audience.” With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrinaravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times and about which Todd Gershwin says, “It was Dave’s creative production of Porgy and Bess that really opened my eyes to the need to finally allow a creative team to interpret the opera in a fresh manner, which led to the recent Broadway production.” Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: Mary Poppins, Tribes, Mothers and Sons, All the Way, A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ New Musical, The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Harvey; 33 Variations; Ragtime; Next to Normal; Hairspray; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Our Town; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; I Am My Own Wife; Urinetown; Crowns; OmniumGatherum; Hedwig; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave serves as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. City of Austin Mayors Kirk Watson and Lee Leffingwell declared, respectively, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’ “Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, seven Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award, and multiple Austin Critics’ Table and B. Iden Payne Awards for “Outstanding Director/Choreographer.” In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s 2012 film Bernie with Jack Black.

ZACH Leadership

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) joined ZACH Theatre as Managing Director in June of 2007, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign! Other accomplishments during her nine years at ZACH include creating a new multiyear strategic plan that will move the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 79 percent and increasing revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to $9 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure.

Elisbeth has led her team in developing innovative new offerings on ZACH’s expanded campus including full-service bars and nightly pre-show entertainment; an exclusive skyline lounge in the Topfer Theatre for donors; and making the theatre available as a red-carpet venue for SXSW, The Daily Show, as well as other major community events. Two years ago, ZACH proudly launched The Dave Steakley Dream Fund designed to enhance the artistic vision of ZACH’s Producing Artistic Director and to maintain production quality and the facility needs of ZACH’s Topfer Theatre and campus. Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed artists’ residency program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. Elisbeth currently serves on the Board of Directors and is Development Committee Chair and President Elect of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York, and has served on NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals Committee and Executive Committee. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 55
