In the Heights Director’s Notes In the fall of 2006, my friend and colleague, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler, called and asked me to be part of the original Off-Broadway cast of In The Heights. He sent me one of the first demo recordings by writer-composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and orchestrator/music director Alex Lacamoire. I remember playing the CD in my car stereo, and upon hearing the first few notes of the titular song, I knew two things: 1) For the first time in my professional career, I had the opportunity to help tell a story that would take me closer to home and my heritage, not farther away from it, and 2) This show was going to make history. I am a Mexican-American, and I grew up in San Antonio, Texas. My mother, a Mexican immigrant and my father, a native Texan born to Mexican immigrants, taught me to feel proud about my cultural heritage. But my career as an artist in New York had always felt disconnected from my culture. The show gave me permission to let my artistic community and my community of origin intersect. The first time my parents saw the show was the first time they had ever seen a piece of their heritage represented on stage. Yet throughout my ten-year relationship with this show, I realized that though it tells the story of a diverse Latino community in a 3-block radius of upper Manhattan, audiences from all over the world were able to see themselves in it. Everyone has their own story about an Abuela or about leaving home and returning home or when they felt their community behind them. One of the most meaningful things of being part of this show is seeing it spark stories and conversations about family and home in the lobbies and at stage doors by all those that see it. In our fragmented country, sharing these stories about acceptance and inclusion feel like a lifeline to keeping the soul of our nation alive. When we opened the show Off-Broadway in 2007, I could never have imagined that an entire decade later, immigrants in this country would be threatened to the degree they are at this untenable contemporary moment. And this is why I am compelled and honored to continue telling a story that celebrates immigrants in this country, and serves as a fervent reminder of how essential and urgent keeping our borders open is to our collective growth. It’s particularly special to be here at ZACH Theatre, in an area of the country that I still call home, close to the border of Mexico, a country I am proud to be a part of, to share it with you. About the Artistic Staff MICHAEL BALDERRAMA (Director and Choreographer) has been lucky enough to have In the Heights be an integral part of his life since the original Off-Broadway production in 2007. He was dance captain, and unexpectedly became the second person to play the role of Usnavi, and the first person who Lin-Manuel Miranda ever saw perform the role in its first full production. He is currently the resident choreographer for HAMILTON in Chicago, He is an American Director, Choreographer, Producer, Dancer, Actor, Teacher, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist. Select Broadway credits: Hamilton, Ghost, In the Heights, Movin’ Out. Film: Rock of Ages, Across the Universe, Michael Jackson’s Ghost. He has choreographed for and/or performed with Gloria Estefan, Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson, Sutton Foster, Vanessa Williams, Brian Adams, Mariah Carey, and Jay Sean. Resident Director/Choreographer of the second National Tour of In the Heights, and Associate Choreographer and Creative Consultant for the Broadway musical Soul Doctor. He has taught for over 25 years on four continents, in more than 20 countries and in 47 of the 50 United States. He is currently producing the upcoming new musical Whiskeyland and new play Uncle Jackie with his production companies, Last Call Theatricals, LLC., and Silver Towers Productions, LLC.

ALLEN ROBERTSON (Musical Director) is a two-time Emmy Award®-winning music director, composer, writer, actor, and director. He has worked on hundreds of productions nationally and internationally, including 24 years of shows at ZACH. Off Broadway: Radio City Music Hall; The Flaming Idiots. Allen has recorded for Disney Records, and many TV and radio commercials. He is a writer/composer of 12 musicals, 60 TV episodes, 2 film scores, and a ballet. He has been recognized by the Texas Legislature, American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, The Texas Music Educators Association, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the National Association of Parenting Publications for his contributions to the arts.

Amidst the crowds of a London train station, Georgie, a delightfully quirky woman, spots Alex, a much older man, and plants a kiss on his neck. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Anna Deavere Smith says, “Dave is the future. The YES in his theater’s walls is as palpable as the walls themselves. That YES, I believe, will lead to something brand new, to connect with a broader, more global audience.” With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) joined ZACH Theatre as Managing Director in June of 2007, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign! Other accomplishments during her nine years at ZACH include creating a new multiyear strategic plan that will move the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 79 percent and increasing revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to $9 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure.

Elisbeth has led her team in developing innovative new offerings on ZACH’s expanded campus including full-service bars and nightly pre-show entertainment; an exclusive skyline lounge in the Topfer Theatre for donors; and making the theatre available as a red-carpet venue for SXSW, The Daily Show, as well as other major community events. Two years ago, ZACH proudly launched The Dave Steakley Dream Fund designed to enhance the artistic vision of ZACH’s Producing Artistic Director and to maintain production quality and the facility needs of ZACH’s Topfer Theatre and campus. Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed artists’ residency program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. Elisbeth currently serves on the Board of Directors and is Development Committee Chair and President Elect of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York, and has served on NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals Committee and Executive Committee. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 55

Group Sales Groups of 8 or more receive discounts and may place advance ticket orders based on availability. We can assist you in everything from planning your pre-show cocktail hour to arranging caterers for a post-show gathering in one of our beautiful spaces. Latecomers and Seating At show time, all empty seats are released back to the house to seat those patrons on stand-by. If you are running late to your performance, phone the Box Office so that we are aware that you are on your way and can hold your seats. Any patron arriving after curtain will be seated at the discretion of House Management. Our ushers will show you to your seat, if it’s easily accessible. If the seat is not accessible, you will be shown to an available seat at a break. At intermission, you’re welcome to relocate to your ticketed seat location.

Special Needs A Box Office Associate will be pleased to assist you with any special seating needs when you purchase your tickets. We have wheelchair and limited mobility seating in all of our theatres, and provide accessible restrooms, entry doors, and walkways. To access the second-level Serra Skyline Lounge in the Topfer Theatre, you many use the elevator located in the lobby. Assisted listening devices are available at the Box Office free of charge. Drinks and Dining ZACH’s bars and lounges open 90 minutes prior to show time. The Topfer lounge remains open post-show for an opportunity to meet and mingle with the cast. Preorder your drinks at the bar, and they will be waiting for you at intermission and postshow. Our bars accept all major credit cards, and you may run a tab during your visit. ZACH’s lounges and bars offer a selection of wines, cocktails, and craft beers. Our Kleberg and Topfer bars offer a wide range of liquor selections including our popular wells and single malt scotches. Gourmet appetizer plates and small bites are also available.

Transportation ZACH’s Box Office staff will happily assist you in arranging a taxi for post-show. 63
