CRUISING THE ISLAND New York, NY Professors: Danica Selem + Kent Hubbel

This thesis focuses on public sexual possibilities for queer men. Gay men have always had to rely on a hidden vernacular in order to navigate the outside world. In Britain in the 1900s to the 1970s, Polari was a secretive slang that served as a way to determine someone’s sexuality as well as allow gay men to freely speak without fear of exposure. Today, dating apps on online chats allow for a completely anonymous form of communication. These codified means of communication vary from generation to generation. Various forms of identity can be expressed through vocabulary, subtle accessories and the spaces which gay men choose to occupy. In today’s day and age, the use of geosocial dating apps, such as Grindr, have begun to create a new “architectonic of digitally interconnected bedrooms” thus changing the landscape of queer space. Years of previously experienced knowledge is available at the edge of our fingertips. Sizing up a person is done remotely rather than in the moment. Locations for a rendezvous are predetermined and planned. The circulation of bodies in digital space can only travel so far before it requires a physical location. This thesis translates communication among gay men during cruising into a new form of architectural polari. Through small-scale interventions, Cruising the Island shows the implications of using churches, grocery stores, and other non-sexual locales as subversive spaces to accommodate cruising.

Brownstone Storefront Typology

The Storefront Church as a typology for Harlem spaces offers dual implications. Its function as a space for religious gathering is met with the variability and impermanence of a storefront setting. These spaces serve multi-purpose uses for the community that can modify depending on the need. The intervention for this space is a Gloryhole in the storage room. In the back of the building, there is a room that is used for storing religious garments and other ceremonial equipment. Following the Cruising the Island logo, queer men will be able to follow a designated path that will lead them to the storage room. Once inside, they must twist the cross on the wall to a complete upsidedown position which will move the vaultlike door lock into the unlocked position. Once they do, they will be able to enter the side room through the hidden door and can begin to use the anonymous Gloryhole.

Grocery Store Typology

The Grocery Store as a typology has a set circulation. The path through your local grocery never jumps from the produce to the toilet paper and then back to the meat section. Understanding this procession, this typology offers its own series of steps required in order to get to the sexual intervention. To begin, there is a face mister, attached to the system that waters the produce that mists the users face in order to make their skin dewy and fresh. They then can make their way to the spotlight meat lamps that keep the prepared cooked meats warm to express their interest by making eye contact while under the lights. In order to prepare for the hookup, there is an optional intervention just past the frozen section that allows one user at a time to take a quick shower and finally, both will make their way to the increasingly tighter aisles where they will find shelves that open to a room designed to facilitate various sexual activities.

Cathedral Typology

The final intervention is a large Cathedral and as the scale of the building increases, so too does the amount of interventions. One enters this church to find the Cruising the Island logo selectively and carefully placed all around. There is no specified circulation, as the interventions are scattered throughout. The first is the confessional. The thickened appearance of these allows one to slip into a back compartment, via a swiveling door and allows them to use this space as a Gloryhole. When in use, the confessional chair folds down, exposing the hole and allowing access. When not in use, the chair stands in a locked position that permits everyday users from seeing the intervention. The organ allows users to play the organ and “play with organs� at the same time as it is used for fisting. Its hollowed out interior allows the organ to be occupied and offer access for fisting play. The prayer booth doubles as a rim chair. Users will be able to lift the booth in order to get into the underground waiting area. Once another user sits on the chair and allows access via the mechanical levers, the opening becomes accessible and the pair can commence rimming. The final intervention is in the small chapel in the back of the cathedral. It is a BDSM room that offers various furnitures to be tied to. The furniture can also be used for everyday chapel use.

BOATHOUSE Ithaca, NY Professor: Vince Mulcahy

Located on what is formerly known as the Johnson Boatyard, The Ithaca Community Rowing Center attempts to bring a bigger sense of community to the Cayuga Inlet. On the same inlet as Cornell and Ithaca College’s rowing center, this building provides a place for Ithacans to find a place to practice the sport. The center includes an array of boats, ranging from doubles to eights. In my project, I sought out to accentuate the Ithaca horizon line. As such a prominent feature, I felt that the boathouse needed to lend itself to its environment. Broken down simply; I designed a heavy box (with stuff in it) with a light pavilion on top of it. I wanted to continue to project a view of this landscape while simultaneously mimicking it. The transition from water to earth to air seen in the site is shown as well in the building with the water, building, and pavilion. However, the building hWas the ability, unlike the Ithaca landscape to transform itself. During the day, the building appears to be solid, letting light in but not seeming too perforated. However, at night the roles are reversed. Light pours out of the base in the same perforated pattern it pours in during the day. It appears simply as two glass boxes, one of which is wrapped with a facade.

The Ribbon Red Hook, Brooklyn , NY Prof: Thomas Phifer, Gabe Smith, Stella Betts & David Leven Partner: Luciana Ruiz

This partner studio focused on housing developments in Red Hook, Brookyln during my New York City “abroad” semester. We examined infrastructures like unused emergency call boxes, inaccessible open fields, and intimate unplanned green spaces. These were evidence to us of both the enormous challenges and potential for this neglected neighborhood. Our project responds to these conditions and learns from our precedent Sanaa’s Kitagata Gifu Apartments (1998) which is a ribbon of multi-level modular housing which activates its context and maximizes daylight to the units. By creating a ribbon building that snakes through Red Hook the building engages underused spaces within the context. Its programmed rooftop park and an elevated walkway spanning multiple housing blocks expand community programs currently lacking in the neighborhood and revitalizes a lead-poisoned park. By adding study and co-op spaces, addressing food scarcity by adding groceries and markets, and communal service facilities the building serves to foster connections amongst residents. Modularity, arguably Gifu’s strongest point, offered a democratic expression allowing the larger units and smaller units a similar expression regardless of the type of tenants. We borrowed and Sanaa’s two-sided exposure allowing natural lighting from both ends of the units, designing for social interactions between its tenants and added communal spaces.

OUR OBSESSIONS BEGAN AN ANALYSIS OF ACCESSIBILITY. WE BEGAN TO LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF PRIVACY AND SECURITY THROUGHOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD BY WAY OF EMERGENCY CALL BOXES AND ACCESS TO PROGRAMMED AND UNPLANNED GREEN SPACES. WE WERE FASCINATED BY THE SURPLUS OF GREEN SPACES THAT WERE INACCESSIBLE AND UNPLANNED. ENTIRE FIELDS AND LOTS FILLED WITH GARDEN-ESQUE CONDITIONS THAT WERE TOTALLY BLOCKED OFF FROM THE PUBLIC. OUR RESEARCH ON SANAA’S KITAGATA GIFU APARTMENTS (1998) BEGAN TO FOCUS ON ITS SINGLE LOADED CORRIDOR, ALLOWING THE UNITS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AN IDEALIZED EXPOSURE TO LIGHT AND ITS ATTEMPT TO FOSTER SOCIAL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ITS TENANTS. THOUGH THE USE OF A SINGLE LOADED CORRIDOR IS A STRONG ELEMENT WITHIN THE DESIGN, SANAA’S BUILDING LACKS IN ITS COMMUNAL IMPLICATIONS. AQUATIC ADVENTURES New York, NY Professor: Werner Goehner

The project brief for this assignment was to create a hybrid hotel along the Highline in NYC. During the initial research of the project, with a partner, I created four maps that would help drive the placement and design of the hotel. The maps sought to study different important factors about and around the Highline, such as transportation and walking access, building densities and daylighting analysis, and an understanding of the ecological micro climates found on the Highline itself. From these analyses, I was able to pick my site, and begin working on the hotel itself. The hybrid that I designed is a combination of a hotel and water park. The building is equipped with multiple slides, various pools (wave pool, lazy river, infinity pool) and offers both private hotel accesses as well as public entrances.

House of Hands is a collaborative research-oriented project with an emphasis on visual representation. Conducted as a partner study, our assignment was to delve deep into a subculture of New York City. The project seeks to illuminate the histories of the underground Ballroom culture that began in the 1970s. A product of Black and Latino queer youth, this research focuses on shedding light on a typically underrepresented community. As pertaining to the objective of the class, the focus of representation drove the research direction. The establishment of hands as an “Avatar”, or subject of focus, guided the technical realm of the analysis. Our study of Neufert’s Architects’ Data studies informed our drawings of nonnormative, undocumented culture. We wanted to create a body of work that both standardized the non-standard movements of Vogue Dancing and Ballroom culture as well as disrupt the monotonous and sterile nature of Neufert’s drawings.

Buried into Goat Island, HoneyComb serves as a multi-program facility. The Bond influence is shown both through gestural symbols such as the gun as well as literal Bond features such as revolving walls and trap doors. The experience ends with a fully submerged casino/restaurant that overlooks the depths of Tobago’s Caribbean waters. Upon descending through Ian Flemming’s renovated hideaway, one enters a large briefing room. This room centers itself around a handgun-esque cylinder in which the user may traverse. The upper level holds various memorabilia of Tobago and it’s relationship with the James Bond franchise and the bottom exhibition rooms each honor the various Bond films. As one walks through the long funneling corridor, they arrive at the grand jewel of the island. The casino houses card tables, slot machines, bars, and a restaurant. The final room houses the scuba room. The drain tank that grants access to the warm Caribbean waters.

Analog Models Ithaca, NY & Oakland, CA

This sections contains a selection of models that I’ve built: Working with a partner, I built the Brazilian Pavilion, the country’s pavilion in the Expo Milano 2015 exhibition. Together we contacted the building’s architects, used and analyzed their plans and devised a plan of attack. Throughout the span of a semester, we studied the structural systems in place and built our model accordingly. Over five feet long, the model was made of soldered brass h-beams. The netting was hand-stitched onto metal piano wire and then soldered onto the main frames. The entire model was then fastened onto a large base of Peruvian Walnut. The second project was made in a group. We were tasked to design test columns using origami folds, to then further develop a 9-foot column using grasshopper and the CNC machine. The column is made of aluminum roof flashing and held together by rivets. The final project, completed for Gensler, is located in Oakland, California and is anticipated to include a large mixed-use project in the Uptown neighborhood. Preliminary design massing includes approximately 2 million sf of mixed-use program: 725,000 gsf of commercial office. The model is a combination of 3d printed sight context, lasercut floor plates, and copper acid-etched facade pieces.

This project sought to approach Architecture from a different perspective. Rather than focus on building, a house, or some other large building, we instead focused on the Architecture of animals. Students were each assigned different animals to study and analyze their movements and actions. I studied the digging motion of the European Mole. The drawings work to describe the 5 essential positions for such a task. As I progressed through the project I began to incorporate the five positions into one moving model. With this model, I figured out how to move all the arms at the same time while only using force on one arm. As the tool moved, the large pieces moved in a fixed motion and the thin pieces were directed by the thick pieces. It was with this movement in which I based my final pavilion design
