First off, we’d like to properly welcome you to the Glasgow School of Art Singapore. We’ve spent a year in this space, and it’s almost our second home. It’s where we’ve had late night dinners while rushing for presentations the next day, helped each other when we were stuck, or even just spent time with friends after a surprisingly relaxing day. Being in your shoes last year, we remember how it felt like having to adapt to a new school and classmates. Hence, this manual was created to help you navigate your first few days here, and to make this transition period a smooth one. We hope you’ll have fun and enjoy yourselves. Because before you know it, you’ll be flying off for Glasgow with your friends for a month, and be lamenting when it’s over.

SCHOOL LIFE Be nice to everyone when you can. Share your knowledge & skills. Work towards your portfolio and read a lot. Don’t worry about people stealing your ideas, we’re still in school. Same ideas can lead to different outcomes anyway because it depends on the individual. Eat outside school - there’s good food and bubble tea.

10

Make great friends who’ll help you whenever you hit a roadblock and bounce off ideas. First 100 days of no weekend. Leave an extra umbrella under your desk for rainy days. Get your own cutting mat and cutter - everyone’s gonna fight over the one in studio. Brace yourselves for lots of work!

P R OJ E C T S Don’t ponder too long for a concept. Record everything you do! Make simple final models, simple renderings. Not everything is needed all the time, some projects may not need to show plans and rendering will do a better job showing your concept. Sometimes models will. Be careful about going to too many lecturers for consultation. You can get confused about your project direction. Set time aside for development. There are endless amounts of possibilities to a solution so explore as much as you can.

UHU por can be used on materials other than foam, it can be rubbed off if used on glossy surfaces and it will make your model look clean without glue stains. Print whatever you can, show your work on paper as much as possible. Don’t rely on lecturers to feed you ideas. Please don’t do last minute work. Really. Unless you don’t want anymore sleep. Get interested in FoCI. It’ll open up your mind. Buy your paper beforehand just so it won’t be too tight a schedule for submissions. 11

STUDIO

A I R CO N

Electronically locks at 10pm Monday to Friday. After 10pm, you’ll need your friends inside to open the doors for you as your key cards will no longer work.

The air-conditioning turns off at 10.15pm from Monday to Friday, but there should be fans somewhere if you need them. Opening the windows help with ventilation too, but beware of bugs.

DOORS

N O F O O D/ D R I N K S

Don’t leave the doors open for too long, as prolonged beeping will cause the security guards to come up and check if there’s anything wrong.

Eating in the studio is prohibited, and please discard your trash OUTSIDE, not into the green bins. The green bins are only for paper. (We’ve had a rat in our studio before)

WARNING: Please do not stick coins or magnets on the doors. It will break the electronic lock and you can get into trouble.
